Lefferts Boulevard

I think that, in the context of the article, the point of calling it a "major thoroughfare" is not to say that it is one of the biggest streets in Queens, but to say that in relation to the residential side street (Austin Street) it was a busier and more active road where perhaps help or safety could be found. Don't think of it as describing Lefferts in relation to all streets in Queens, but only about its relationship to the event taking place there at that moment. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:38, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Isn't the correct name of this thoroughfare "119th Street"? Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 22:12, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
On second thought, Austin Street is too a busy street, at least east of Yellowstone Boulevard. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 22:17, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
I took a look on Google Maps' Street View at the intersection (which, of course, is not the same thing as looking at it as it was 60 years ago), and Austin Street is residential looking and not all that wide (2 lanes of parking and one of traffic), while Lefferts Boulevard is about 33% bigger (2 lanes of parking, 2 lanes of traffic in 2 directions) with retail shops - so the point of the statement in the article stands, I think, that getting to Lefferts Boulevard was an attempt to get to a more major thoroughfare. Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:53, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
A 4-lane street is no less important than a 5-lane street if they are both heavily traveled and/or heavily visited. Austin Street is very busy around 71st/Continental Avenue. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 12:41, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Please don't do this again. All you have done here is change a problem article which can be deleted because of the problem, to an even worse one that now can't. If you're not capable of translating something properly, adding a bad machine translation is not a productive thing to do--Jac16888 Talk 17:56, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Did you bother to read it after you copy and pasted the translation in, without thought to any kind of readability, syntax or grammar? Please do so now, and perhaps you will see why it was not an improvement--Jac16888 Talk 18:01, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Let me get this straight. You added a mass of terrible content, realised it was terrible, and because it was terrible decided not to fix it? You've really got this whole "editing the encyclopedia thing" down haven't you--Jac16888 Talk 18:07, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Not edit it perhaps? If you came across a man needing a heart transplant would you just jump in and give it a shot? (assuming you're not actually a heart surgeon)--Jac16888 Talk 18:13, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hypertension

hello epicgenius !  :)

please can we discuss.

you reverted an edit of mine, on 16-Oct at 16:44, page Hypertension - Signs and symptoms paragraph #1.

original text - "... A proportion of people with high blood pressure report headaches (particularly at the back of the head and in the morning), as well as lightheadedness, vertigo, tinnitus (buzzing or hissing in the ears), altered vision or fainting episodes.[3] These symptoms however are more likely to be related to associated anxiety than the high blood pressure itself.[4]"

my edit - "... These symptoms might be related to associated anxiety rather than the high blood pressure itself.[4]"

the problem - the cited article DOES NOT demonstrate it is 'more likely'. it suggests a possible relationship, without proving the relationship causality or % incidence.

your thoughts ?

snu7 :)

ps - there are other factors which can cause both hypertension and anxiety and the other symptoms (eg POTS/OI, causing increased epinephrine etc). there are other factors which can cause both hypertension and the other symptoms. i don't have proof of % incidence. i'm just pointing out that the relationship between hypertension, anxiety, and other symptoms, isn't simple.

pps - be gentle, i'm a newbie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snu7 (talkcontribs) 10:35, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

In regard to your edits to this article:

  • Please recall that "New York, New York" is a postal address, and is not proper to use as a location, since it is ambiguous (does the first "New York" refer to "New York City" or to "New York County"?). Please try to use "Manhattan, New York CIty". As a world city, New York City does not require additional identification (i.e state and country), so "Manhattan, New York City" is quite sufficient.
  • Your change of the location of Cooper Union in the article text was not the best idea, since what you were identifying was only one of the school's buildings, the Foundation Building. Since the school's "campus" is entirely on Cooper Square, "Cooper Square" remains the best way to describe where the school is located.

Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:07, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

"The intersection of Cooper Square and Astor Place" is only partially correct. Do people know that it's also at Third Avenue and at St. Mark's Place? Yes, it might be the corner of Cooper Square and Astor Place, but a corner is:different than an intersection.
Additionally, "New York, NY" is not an acceptable link for the reasons that you described above (New York is a city, county, and a state)... Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 12:27, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

We noticed though that when you edited South Street (Manhattan), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Broad Street and Pearl Street (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Your deletions of parameters that may subsequently be input

Please stop deleting parameters that may subsequently be input from infoboxes. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:23, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

There is a greater chance that the article bight be deleted, merged, or otherwise changed than there is of the infobox parameters being filled. Also, what's the odds of all the parameters being filled? (Note: I have been talked to about this before.) Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 20:27, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
It's broadly accepted that infoboxes are input in the template form. Deletion of parameters that might be input is not an accepted practice. It causes unnecessary work for those who may later input the parameters, or worse yet leads to a failure to encourage input of the information. There is no consensus support for your practice. It's disruptive for you to engage in that practice -- you are deleting parameters that may be filled in later, without consensus support for the practice. If you wish to change consensus, feel free. If you have been spoken to about this before, and taken an IDONTLIKEIT approach against consensus, marring the template form as input, that could be a problem. Please don't do it in the future. You add nothing to how the article itself looks, as readers do not see as-of-yet unfilled parameters, and you impair the future of the article for zero benefit. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
If that is the case, then what I did is justified, for the parameters that I deleted do not seem to be added into the article in the future, if the infobox gets altered at all. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 20:43, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
That's completely untrue. Obviously. Just look at your deletion here. Of course its untrue, for example that you happen to know that an image will never, ever be added. Anyway -- the rule, which should make it simple for you -- is to leave such parameters as they are, unfilled. It does not damage to what the reader sees. What you are doing, in contrast, is disruptive. Not only that -- you left an extremely misleading edit summary there, failing to mention that the vast majority of your edit was the deletion of template parameters. Please, as well, leave properly descriptive edit summaries, rather than misleading ones.--Epeefleche (talk) 21:18, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
See the conversion templates that I added onto the page. I just wanted to make a 'constructive' edit with these, but apparently that's untrue too, since conversion templates need to be written out completely, just so you can leave 90% of the template empty. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 21:21, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
The only time that empty template parameters should be deleted is when there is absolutely no possibility of their being used in the future. For instance, for a film that has no narrator, there's no problem in removing the "narrator" parameter, as it's never going to suddenly get a narrator in the future. However, the "gross" parameter shouldn't be deleted, since just because we don't know the gross at this time doesn't mean that it might be disccovered in the future.

When in doubt, leave the parameter. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:42, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

East River/New York City

What was your thinking in removing the identification of the East River being located in New York City from the PS General Slocum article? I don't get how it has a problem that needed to be fixed. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:38, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Huh? I don't get what you are talking about. Please provide a link to the diff. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 23:39, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
In this edit you changed "New York's East River" to "the [[East River]]" in the infobox. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:44, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
...because there's only one East River in New York. I'll change it back. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 23:47, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
I see I've been beat to it. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 23:48, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
"because there's only one East River in New York"' Many of the people who read the article will known very little, or even nothing, about the disaster, so we can't just "East River" and assume they know that the East River is in NYC. That's why identifying where it is located is a good thing to do. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:56, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Stop reversing this edit

So, you need to not reverse the line on Mary Richardson" "One may observe from photos, that Mary Richardson attacked a painting of a highly attractive voluptuous nude with a comely face; the exact opposite of her own unattractive straight body type." Per the talk page:

There is a serious problem with the line at the end of the section on Fascism, which stated: ""One may observe from photos, that Mary Richardson attacked a painting of a highly attractive voluptuous nude with a comely face; the exact opposite of her own unattractive straight body type."

First, this is opinion, second it is misogynistic, third it is unsighted or supported by any reference. Get it together, folks. Hi there. I see you reverted the addition of Janie McLure from the school's notable alumni. Her name was added yesterday, and I also nearly reverted it. I Googled her name, and sure enough she's a highly successful oil baroness from the town of Marianna. Overlinking

Hi, thanks for your message. Unless there's a good reason, we don't normally link commonly known country-names, and avoid bunches of postal address locations, linking only the most specific item (which itself will have links to the broader geographical entities). "Geologist" just might have crossed over the line of acceptability, but certainly not "author". Please avoid what are called "dictionary links", since readers are expected to be familiar with English vocabulary.

I suppose the long and short of it is that rationing links strengthens the navigational system. You'll see undisciplined scattergun linking in foreign WPs that is not only an ungainly mess in appearance, but doesn't select (what editors judge to be) the most relevant and likely targets for clicking.

The soft evidence is that readers don't really click much on links at all. Tony (talk) 02:26, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

We were wondering why you deleted the Polybius photo contributions on the page. We (RogueSynapse) built the machine and submitted our own images/photographs. The cabinet is based on the oldest images on the net of the Polybius cabinet (from KLOV). I did a great deal of research before building the cabinet and designing the software on www.sinnesloschen.com as a Halloween release back around 2007. The images we submitted predate the Rob Sherman cabinet by 4 years and reflect the same cabinet seen on the build site.

The Sherman cabinet is not particularly accurate and, if it has any validity, it is because it was posted on wikipedia (rather than it being posted there on any authority of its own). I would be happy to see the KLOV version there instead of any other but we have no rights to that image. A great deal of work went into making ours as authentic as possible. Please either leave our images there, or remove all three (ours and Sherman's) and replace with the oldest known image (if within your power).

For what its worth, I own the trademark to the Polybius software and own Sinnesloschen LLC. I owned the images we submitted and made them public record in order to post them. A buddy recently pointed out the wikipedia post to me so I added to it rather than subtracting content. I have not posted before to Wikipedia as I have not seen the need. Please let me know if I did so in error or if there is some other way I can add to or correct this. You will find this content matches material found on www.sinnesloschen.com website which dates back to 2007 (predating the 2011 phot originally in place).

Thanks (sorry about the length of the message)

VisualEditor newsletter on 16 October 2013

VisualEditor is still being updated every Thursday. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at Mediawiki during the previous week. If you haven't done so already, you can turn on VisualEditor by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable".

The reference dialog for all Wikipedias, especially the way it handles citation templates, is being redesigned. Please offer suggestions and opinions at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. (Use your Wikipedia username/password to login there.) You can also drag and drop references (select the reference, then hover over the selected item until your cursor turns into the drag-and-drop tool). This also works for some templates, images, and other page elements (but not yet for text or floated items). References are now editable when they appear inside a media item's caption (bug 50459).

There were a number of miscellaneous fixes made: Firstly, there was a bug that meant that it was impossible to move the cursor using the keyboard away from a selected node (like a reference or template) once it had been selected (bug 54443). Several improvements have been made to scrollable windows, panels, and menus when they don't fit on the screen or when the selected item moves off-screen. Editing in the "slug" at the start of a page no longer shows up a chess pawn character ("♙") in some circumstances (bug 54791). Another bug meant that links with a final punctuation character in them broke extending them in some circumstances (bug 54332). The "page settings" dialog once again allows you to remove categories (bug 54727). There have been some problems with deployment scripts, including one that resulted in VisualEditor being broken for an hour or two at all Wikipedias (bug 54935). Finally, snowmen characters ("☃") no longer appear near newly added references, templates and other nodes (bug 54712).

Looking ahead: Development work right now is on rich copy-and-paste abilities, quicker addition of citation templates in references, setting media items' options (such as being able to put images on the left), switching into wikitext mode, and simplifying the toolbar. A significant amount of work is being done on other languages during this month. If you speak a language other than English, you can help with translating the documentation.

Aaron

Why, when an editor changed the wording in the Aaron article in the christianity section, referring to Melchizidik as a person instead of a mystical figure did you change it back? Is it to do with the fact that he is a biblical only figure and therefore must be mystical? No offense intended or taken I am just curious. speednat (talk) 21:05, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

I made mistakes. Should I change it back? Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 22:14, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

KML

Since the KML route map is replacing geocoords, it makes sense that it should go in the same place where the coords were, at the top of the article, and there is then no need to have to at the bottom as well. On the principle that wikicode should go near to where it's displayed on the page, please put the KML template at the top of the article, and mark it to display only in the title. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:51, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

I was just following examples set by other articles with KML files, which display the KML file inline and in title, at the bottom. For example, see Brookline Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard. I will change all the KML files that I posted today if you want me to. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 00:54, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
I did a couple of them, but, yeah, I think it would be good to have the KML at the top - certainly we shouldn't be displaying it in two places, so even if the code is left at the bottom, it should only display in one place, and if the coords are removed, that should be the top. Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:04, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm fine with putting it at the top, I can just put them with the "display=inline" parameter at first so I could edit them. When I am done, I can edit it back. Epicgenius(give him tiradecheck out damage) 12:14, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

RE: FA nomination for 7 Subway Extension

You are in the middle of the nomination. You have added the FAC template, and are one of the top editors. The next thing you have to do is to go to Talk:7 Subway Extension and click the red texted "initiate the nomination". Click it and you're going to be lead to the nomination page. You have to edit the line "I am nominating this for featured article because..." only, other things will be done by default. In this line (or if you want to change it), you have to explain why you are nominating it for FA status. Once you give the reason, you have to add the following text to the top of the WP:FAC nominations, in this case above Paul Henderson's nomination: {{Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/7 Subway Extension/archive1}} Once this is finished 7SE will be nominated. Watchlist that page because it may be constantly edited. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 21:43, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

I hope this helps you, and good luck with the process. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 21:44, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
