Washington, DC neighborhoods

There was an extended discussion about this a while back at Talk:Georgetown_(Washington,_D.C.)#Proposed_move, resulting in no consensus - I don't remember the details at the moment, but before you continue with your en masse edits, can you take a quick look at it? I'll do likewise. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 00:08, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

@JohnInDC: Sure, I'll take a look. Thanks for alerting me to this. epicgenius (talk) 00:09, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
@JohnInDC: Just had a quick skim. It looks like there were different opinions. Some were for the comma (mostly for the sake of consistency) and others were for parentheses (because Washington, D.C. isn't really a "natural disambiguator" and possibly, I assume, because it has a comma already). Maybe I should create a new RM discussion to deal with the consistency issue. No opinion either way on comma or parenthetical disambiguation, but I just think there should be a consistent naming convention. epicgenius (talk) 00:14, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. There were indeed a variety of views, and I know I came down on the parenthetical side. I'm going through it all a bit more carefully to see how I feel about it today. I do agree re consistency within DC neighborhoods, if nothing else. Thanks for thinking about this, and if you open up a new discussion, let me know! JohnInDC (talk) 00:21, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
@JohnInDC: No problem. I'll probably make a new discussion in a few days, probably at the Georgetown article so people could also see the last move discussion. And I'll definitely let you know. epicgenius (talk) 00:28, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
@JohnInDC: I haven't forgotten about this, but I've been a bit busy for the past week. I will make an RM discussion soon. epicgenius (talk) 14:54, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Growth team updates #4

Welcome to the fourth newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

We need your feedback!

We have two requests for community members:

  1. Now that data is coming in for the welcome survey, we are planning how to use that data to personalize the newcomer's first day. See our current thoughts here, and join the conversation here.
  2. Try out the help panel's interactive prototype, and read about how we're planning to roll it out, and post any thoughts or reactions here.

Two Growth team projects have been deployed (detailed updates here)

  • Personalized first day (welcome survey) was deployed on November 20 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
    • The survey is now being shown to half of new users (A/B test). Responses are being recorded in the database. We'll report on initial results during December.
    • We are planning to test a second version of the survey, called "Variation C", which we think will maximize the number of users who complete the survey and stay on the wiki.
    • The original objective of this project was to give newcomers the materials they need to achieve their goals, and so now we are currently planning how we will use the information collected in the welcome survey to personalize the newcomer's experience. We hope community members will read our current thinking and join the conversation here. Some of the plans we are considering include:
      • Making it easy for newcomers to see editing activity around the topic areas in which they indicated that they're interested.
      • Connecting interested newcomers to experienced editors.
      • Surfacing the help content most relevant to the reason for which the newcomers created their accounts.
  • Understanding first day (EditorJourney) was deployed on November 15 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias. It has been done after a longer security review and final testing than expected. Data is now being recorded for all new users on those wikis, and we've been auditing the data and preparing to make initial reports during December. Stay tuned for the next newsletter!

Help panel is under construction

  • Focus on help desk (help panel) is planned to be deployed during the week of January 7 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
  • This interactive prototype is the best way to see the design and wording in the feature.
  • We ran live user tests on the prototype, with results posted here.
  • In addition to giving the ability to ask a question, the help panel will also contain a set of links to existing help content. Our ambassadors on Czech and Korean Wikipedias are determining the right initial set of most helpful links in this task.
  • We encourage community members to try out the prototype and read about the rules for who will get the feature, and add any thoughts to this discussion.

We are still looking for volunteers

Do you want to participate to our experiments? We are looking for new communities to work with us (especially a new mid-size wiki), and people to become ambassadors to help us to communicate with the different communities. Discover how you can involve yourself or your community.

Also, please share this update with your community and interested people!

Thanks again for your efforts! ―Buster7  20:45, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@Buster7 and Dmartin969: Thank you very much! I appreciate it. epicgenius (talk) 00:34, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Congrats! I don't know how you manage to keep up with the editing while being in college. I have had to pare back significantly with my start of college this year. Keep up the great work!--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 01:14, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
@Kew Gardens 613: Thanks! Yeah, I've had to cut back as well. I actually have edited less substantively since getting a job this year, though I still have early mornings, late afternoons, and part of the weekend to edit. epicgenius (talk) 02:15, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

600 V dc system

Your knowledge of electric traction systems has large holes. There have been many systems with 600 V overhead, and many still exist. The MBTA Blues line, the Red Line of the Cleveland RTA, Niagara Junction Railway, Iowa Traction. Also, don't forget that one of the very first electric railways in the USA, the Baltimore and Ohio line through the Howard Street tunnel used a 600 V d.c. overhead conductor bar. Perhaps you need to stop editing articles related to electrified railways?? It seems clear that your knowledge of them is somewhat limited. - Morphenniel (talk) 21:22, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@Morphenniel: You gleaned that from one incorrect edit summary that I should stop editing articles about electric railways? That's quite an overreaction. epicgenius (talk) 00:32, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, just so you know, we can create a new category for overhead 600 V DC railways instead of this nonsense about me not editing articles about electric railways. Does that sound good? epicgenius (talk) 00:35, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
Your "incorrect edit summary" explanation does not address the fact that you have also been adding a locomotive category to articles on multiple units. That shows lack of understanding of the differences between the two types of traction unit. Why I say you should not edit is because you are potentially more dangerous than a vandal. A vandal is easy to spot. An editor that makes errors in between a number of good edits is much harder to identify, and can do much longer damage to the encyclopedia. Morphenniel (talk) 14:04, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
@Morphenniel: you have also been adding a locomotive category to articles on multiple units - Well, if my edits are incorrect, then the proper thing is to tell me what is wrong so I won't make the mistake the next time. So I acknowledge this mistake. But for saying this Why I say you should not edit is because you are potentially more dangerous than a vandal. you get a

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.
I do acknowledge this error. I forgot about the 600 V DC overhead lines. But I didn't add any locomotive category to any EMU articles. I only moved the 600 V DC third rail locomotives category.
I'll try not to make this mistakes in the future, but considering these edits were less than 0.01% of my total edit count, and considering I've had to fix errors by many established editors before, your suggestion for me to stop editing electric railroad articles because of the one error is kind of silly. At worst, my category renaming moved these articles to a broader category; nothing new was added when I renamed the 600 V DC third rail category. I'm saying that your comment was an overreaction to me not knowing/forgetting something, when what you could do is to simply point out what the mistake was. Now I'll know not to make this mistake again. epicgenius (talk) 15:00, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
What about this? [1] Morphenniel (talk) 15:39, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
That was part of me moving the pages from Category:600 V DC third rail locomotives to Category:600 V DC locomotives after moving the category. If that category was already on the page, it was renamed. I wasn't the person who added the category on the page. epicgenius (talk) 16:02, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Grand Central

Hey, also, I'm going to Grand Central on January 7th to take a massive amount of photos; you're welcome to join too if you'll be nearby. I received a permit from the terminal and everything. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 15:54, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@: Great! I'll check my calendar to see if I will be free on that date. My workplace is located near Grand Central so I can probably drop by. I'm also planning to take some pictures next week, as my school (Baruch College) is also located near Grand Central. epicgenius (talk) 16:00, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, I didn't know you needed a permit to take photos. That's interesting... epicgenius (talk) 16:01, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Only for if you're using a tripod and other equipment like that. Can I PM you somehow with more details about the shoot? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 16:31, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Sure, feel free to email me. Or message me if you're on the Wikipedia Discord channel. epicgenius (talk) 16:34, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @: Hey, just saw this. Is there some central city office to contact for this kind of permit, or does it require tracking down the operations staff (or whoever) for each location? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:50, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure; I was just browsing the terminal's website and found this form. Best, ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:26, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Aha. That link is useful, thanks. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:35, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Industry City

Saw you nominated it for GA. Just FYI if there's a particular picture you want for the article, I'm there on a semi-regular basis. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:48, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites: Thanks for the offer. I went there on Tuesday, and now that I think of it, there are some things that still need to be photographed or require better photos. I only got a grainy exterior shot of the newly opened Japan Village on Third Avenue between 35th and 36th, and I didn't get any interior shots at all. By the way, there are some warehouses between 1st and 2nd Avenue south of 39th Street that I didn't get to. (These are technically part of NYCEDC's Bush Terminal though, and not Industry City, so it's fine if you don't want to photograph that.) Anyway, just some photo suggestions which are by no means necessary. epicgenius (talk) 17:37, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Will see what I can do. Interior of the Japanese Village may be challenging (or at least getting a halfway decent shot) since it seems like it's always really crowded. Which warehouses do you mean? There's a new abc carpet at that location. I think, though I'm not sure, that it's technically part of Industry City (i.e. not in one of the "real" Industry City buildings but has the name on it - I guess it's turning into an unofficial neighborhood rather than a collection of buildings). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:40, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: It looks like the ABC Carpet building used to be a loft factory building. Though I'm not 100% sure, it has a similar design to this. However, a picture of that building would be appreciated.
I think buildings like this (43rd Street and 1st Avenue, which is actually operated by NYCEDC) used to be warehouses as part of Bush Terminal, but I'm not completely sure on these, either. So a streetscape of 1st or 2nd Avenues might be fine.
I almost forgot about Bush Terminal Piers Park as well - that's something we have no images on. epicgenius (talk) 17:52, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Map pointer

Hi.

Concerning the map you added to St. John's Park, which I assume you've been adding to other articles: Is there anything that can be done about the pointer? It's so big, so round, and the arrow part of it so small, that it can hardly be said to be a pointer at all -- its like a big blue ball sitting on the map. If I didn't already know where the "park" was, the map & pointer really wouldn't tell me, because I can't determine where it's pointing to. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:56, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

@Beyond My Ken: I've tried a new zoom level with a smaller icon. Let me know how that works. epicgenius (talk) 18:41, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Much better, although the pointer could be even "pointier" for my taste. Still, an improvement, thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:40, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Ref missing?

Hey Epicgenius, it appears you added in a ref tag several times that didn't have a ref behind it. And here today someone removed them. Do you know what ref was supposed to attach to that, and can you restore them? Thanks. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 02:00, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

@: Sorry, I don't know. It seems that the reference name was added in this edit but was never defined. It must be a VisualEditor bug. epicgenius (talk) 03:00, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Help

Hi, I see you are a fellow Article Rescue Squadron member. Can you please fix the issues in the games section of the Playstation Portable article to comply with this GA reviewer's demands. Grand Central

So I might spend a while syncing up all the refs to have good and consistent formats, but otherwise, I don't have much left to add. Once you're comfortable with the history and everything, I can help create a summary and help with the move, and help with the GA review process. As well, I'm still working on Draft:Grand Central Terminal art and will have to wait on the photoshoot too. But what else could I do here now? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 05:12, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

@: There's still quite a bit missing in the history. For instance, I'm trying to fill in the "Heyday: 1910s-1940s" section, which is only two paragraphs, one of which is a single sentence. The following two sections need more references as well, but if you have any details you can add, feel free to do so. If you're specifically looking for something to do, here's a link to the "Grand Central Terminal Interior" landmark status, which contains detailed information about the interior.
I also borrowed two library books: Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark and Grand Central Terminal: Railroads, Architecture and Engineering in New York. So I'll be adding details from these over the Christmas break. These are both available at the New York Public Library's Main Branch (incidentally very close to Grand Central) if you need them. epicgenius (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I'll add a bit more from the interior nycl nomination, but most is either added or I think goes into too much detail. I do want to avoid making this huge article too technical, into detail, and longer than it already is. I've been trying to find good e-books, but most are partially protected. I'm away from the NY area until January, and away from libraries, so I'm just relying on the internet for now... ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 16:25, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I know. I've looked through the books that I borrowed, as well as the nomination, and they go into way too much detail about the aspects of the terminal. What I've added so far is just the summary. epicgenius (talk) 16:26, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Okay so now I've made Grand Central Terminal art live, and created Draft:History of Grand Central Terminal for us to move the history section to. I've moved the GCAG section to the history draft where I think it best belongs; I made a summary of it in the GCT article too. I'm leaving the GCT art article to just about art in or about the terminal and its predecessors. Lmk if you have any thoughts. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 21:33, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

@: Thanks. Do you want to nominate the Art article for GA status now, or later? I think the article might be good enough.
I forgot to mention that I had already made a draft for History of the Grand Central Terminal at User:Epicgenius/sandbox/26. I will merge these two articles now. epicgenius (talk) 22:06, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Ah, okay, cool. Also, I won't personally nominate the Art article; I think its sourcing in a few places is thin, and it's also hopeless to include every significant event since the terminal's opening. There are probably many events or pieces left out that would require extensive digging. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:17, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
@: All right. I'll nominate it later, then. There's a bunch of events that I can add from various newspapers. epicgenius (talk) 17:24, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Okay, cool, thanks. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:26, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Are you adding more popculture info from Langmead? If not, I can, there's more good stuff there. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:19, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Not really. I'm focusing more on the history and design aspects, as well as expanding the history draft. epicgenius (talk) 17:24, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Alright, I'll get to it then! ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:26, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Sometimes gems pop up in unusual places. As mentioned in Langmead, this work about Grand Central, other than being an extremely amusing read, was written by Leo Szilard, who was evidently immensely responsible for humanity's use of nuclear energy. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 17:42, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Wow! TIL something new. epicgenius (talk) 17:49, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Also, what do you think about this? This journal makes it seem like this did actually exist, though I haven't seen this image before anywhere. What do you think? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:15, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

If you're asking if we should include it, then yes, we should include it in the history article. epicgenius (talk) 19:23, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Okay, but have you seen this image elsewhere? Do you think it was just a proposal, or do you think it was a physically-built stage between depot and station? Do any other works comment on this version with its many mansard rooves and other changes? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:27, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Yes, it is described in Robins & New York Transit Museum (2013), p. 30. It is shown as a preliminary plan. Though the facade is indeed what was built, the grand rotunda was never constructed. epicgenius (talk) 19:33, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Also, another random thought is that the lede should probably reflect more than just train info: that the terminal is a mall (per NYT), arts center/exhibition space (music, performances, etc), with fancy restaurants and bars, the tennis court, hosting squash, and its cultural showcase use displaying the Colorama, rocket, locomotive, plane, Art Cars, etc. (per Langmead p166). Some of the great things to love about the terminal. Not sure how to word this, but you can try or I can attempt it later on... ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:28, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

That is a lot of information to include in the lead. I'll give it a shot once I'm done adding all the relevant information. On a side note, I want to make the History article a good article (like History of the Second Avenue Subway) and then a featured article (like Construction of Rockefeller Center). epicgenius (talk) 19:33, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
I know, but it's pretty important to focus on more than just transit: all of it does right now except only one sentence focusing on tourism. I think this might be worth cutting away the ownership info and removing some of the details on the tracks, probably everything except for its first sentence. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:43, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
I think it would be pretty important to mention the number of tracks and platforms, but yes, they can be condensed. Something like this: Grand Central has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world, as well as 43 tracks. Another eight tracks and four platforms are being built on two new levels deep underneath the existing station as part of East Side Access. I do agree that the stores should be mentioned as well, and the ownership could be trimmed to one sentence: Grand Central Terminal is owned by Midtown Trackage Ventures, a private company, but as of 2018, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is in the process of buying it. epicgenius (talk) 19:47, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Also, by the way, I don't think anyone would mind if you removed all the history on the main article for now, except for a section with a small paragraph to expand upon a little later. That way you won't need to keep updating both, and we can just publish the history article when it's done. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 20:29, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
@: Luckily, I have a way to preserve the "history" section until the new article is ready to be published. The replacement "history" section is at User:Epicgenius/sandbox/26. The new article is Draft:History of Grand Central Terminal. I'm not making any more modifications to Grand Central Terminal#History until the new article is complete. epicgenius (talk) 20:49, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Whoa there's still a ton there; I really think it needs to be halved or quartered and not go much further than any other section; summary style should potentially make it just an overview, smaller than the largest of the other sections, allowing people to go to the sub-article for full details. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 20:58, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
That is a 66% summary of what is in the "History" article. I could reduce it more, but significant details would have to be axed. epicgenius (talk) 21:00, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Still, it has plenty that readers won't need in a cursory overview, like the nepotism, construction specifics, One Vanderbilt, etc. I could try trimming once it's live... ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 21:08, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
