Thank you for your emendations to my user page! Though it seems as if it had been vandalized in the edit prior to yours, making the Italian even worse than which I am capable (si vere illud potest!). Vandals are one thing about wiki that I suppose we will never be able to fix. As for Iosue/Giosue, I ask if the variance is dialectual? My sicilian grandmother called me Giosue and my neapolitan grandmother Iosue. Maybe the G was just slight in her pronunciation, and I never picked up on it. I unfortunately suffer from the same problem of heritage speakers of any language. Not having studied Italian formally after 18 years of speaking it, I find I am terrible at spelling. I write what I hear in my head, not what is correct. All this will change in the fall, when I go on to pursue my masters in Latin and Greek. I will be fastracking an Italian undergraduate degree, while I pursue my masters. I hope to come back home to do doctoral work, and I will definitely need serious study before I can take classes taught in Italian. As far as your "spelling" is concerned, Giosuè the Italian form as witnessed by the Italian poet Giosue Carducci and by the byblical King and prophet (Giosué)[1], so feel free to keep your Iosue as a local spelling. I'm quite respectful of local traditions (being admin not only on it.wiki but also on vec.wiki), and glad to read your interest for italy. As for yur state of "heritage speaker" I see your experience as a treasure, a record of a language which, in times of roaring involution of my cherished language, must be kept in a guarded chest, especially when a superimposing structure of formal Italian is going to take its place in your mental database. as a scholar in classics and a musician I'm sure that it will not be a problem, we are prepared to embed new languages and compare them delighting every advantage they come with. Just take my consideration as an advice to be proud of your linguistic heritage. OK, thanks heaps for the translate. I overlooked the user/usor thing, mostly due to my ineptitude in Latin, and I redirected Lingva Latina to Lingua Latina as to avoid confusion, i was looking for the article and i automatically typed with the v, Lingva Latina is one of the only phrases I know. :) I'll keep the u/v thing in mind when I'll do stuff on the Latin Wikipedia. Just back from holiday, hence my delay in replying. I certainly didn't translate "Gangkhar Peunsum". I found the translation either on-line or in Steven Berry's book (reference in article), I suspect in the latter. I have a copy of the book but when I last tried to find it I couldn't! Style guide

Hi Josh - my apologies for not getting back to you earlier. I was away for a little bit and just saw your message. I don't know of a page in the Wikipedia namespace that addresses exactly what you are looking for. Have you taken a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style? It has a lot of material, so it might take some time to find what you need. Generally, I tell new users to add material in a manner that makes the information transparent and clear. Usually, it then becomes easier to determine the style that is needed for the page. Genomai

To begin with, I don't know if the Greek Wikipedia really counts as the definitive source on the matter. If anything, the French Wikipedia would be more authoritative as it was a Frenchman who named the element. My reference was the OED online, which cited the -gen suffix as being generally related to γίνομαι, γένος, γεννάω, etc. I guess I simply took it upon myself to pick the most appropriate word from these related roots for the article. Upon further reading, the OED claims that Lavoisier claimed his naming to be based on γείνομαι, which I have not even heard of. Admittedly, I'm not terribly advanced in Ancient Greek (5 semesters undergrad), and it was entirely focused on NT and LXX Koine, so my ignorance of a word is not too noteworthy. Have you heard of γείνομαι? Is it related to any of the aforementioned words? If so, perhaps a pragmatic approach could have γείνομαι listed in the article, and have it linked to γίνομαι or γεννάω or something, so that readers would at least have something useful to investigate. I see you've made the suggested changes on the hydrogen article. Looks good. If you feel really ambitious, perhaps you could add an entry in Wiktionary and fix the link. Sadly I don't yet own a Liddell-Scott, and my Danker doesn't have it, so I wouldn't have the resources to do it myself. As for the font I used, it's a unicode font. I got the typewriter here [4]. It's kind of a hassle, because you need to install a separate program, and then run it in the system tray every time you want to type in Greek, but it works pretty well, and since it's Unicode, it works properly on Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc. Cerealkiller13 07:23, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

thanks for the explanation. I will probably change the definition on my talk page. I took two years of Latin in middle school(intermediate school, before secondary school, or high school), but that has faded away since then. My current user name was just a quick online translation, as a previous user name(same thing, except in English) bore too close a resemblance to another Wikipedian. I doubt I will change user names, as I already have a substantial amount from edits to this account. It's funny you should mention it, because scripts are always where I was most interested. I dabbled with something I came up with that had an inordinate number of conjugations and declensions (including a dual case), but it never really got out of the development stage. I think it's because I tend to focus so much on English that I can't get creative enough. I guess branching out and learning some non-Latinate languages might help. Translation help needed

Hey, I saw you mentioned at Wikipedia:Translators_available#Latin-to-English. Translation help needed for the articles Rus' people, Rus (name), Kievan Rus', Rus' Khaganate, and probably also Varangians and Annales Bertiniani.

Original Latin source: [6] (starting with "Venerunt etiam legati Graecorum a Theophilo imperatore directi, Theodosius videlicet, Calcedonensis metropolitanus episcopus, et Theophanius spatharius, ferentes cum donis imperatore dignis epistolam quos imperator quinto decimo Kalendas Iunii in Ingulenheim honorifice suscepit" on that page, and continuing AFAIK for two more pages).

The Latin source I need help on is the Annales Bertiniani, which is a collection of Frankish annals that was completed in 882 AD. The issue behind this is the historical first mention of the Rus' people, which was a Norse tribe, also known as the Varangians from Sweden that, starting in the 9th century from Novgorod and Kiev (Kievan Rus') and allegedly under the leadership of their chieftain Rurik (or rather RøRikR in Old Norse) conquered portions of the Baltics and today's northwestern Russia, a realm which was soon known as the Rus' Khaganate (with the result that lots of placenames, such as Novgorod, actually have an Old Norse etymology). Eventually, the Rus' Khaganate, even though the Norse ruling elite was but small and soon assimilated to the Balto-Slavic population, became the nucleus and namegiver for modern Russia.

The thing is, this so-called Normannic theory is still kinda controversial, as modern Russian scholars often regard it as a modern romantic nationalist myth originating with late-19th century Pan-Germanism. What the Russians are saying is that the original Rus were actually Slavs. Now, these 9th century Annales Bertiniani seem to be a rather authoritative, and, given their time of origination, pretty concise, source to refute these Russian scholars.

What I get of this Latin text is only the gist of it. Apparently, a delegation of Rus people were interrogated by Frankish Emperor Louis the Pious at Ingelheim am Rhein in 839 AD, where they said that:

• the name of their tribe was Rus (spelled "Rhos" in this Latin text, maybe via Byzantine Greek translation? As far as I can tell, a letter from Byzantine Emperor Theophilos or Michael III is mentioned),
• they originally came from Sweden
• but had settled in what is northwestern Russia today (I find this information several times in modern sources, attributing it to the Annales Bertiniani, but *WHAT THE HECK* was their contemporary name for "northwestern Russia"?), and
• that they had switched to calling their chieftains chacanus now.

Chacanus is Latin for Khagan, a title they had likely borrowed from contact with the Avars while conquering from the Baltic coast southward. It's why their realm in centuries to come was to be known as the Rus' Khaganate.

But what I need for good sourcing is an exact translation of portions relevant to the informations bulleted above. The book does not seem to be rare and should be available at any decent college library. There is also this: http://www.medievalsources.co.uk/stbertin.htm which should have the whole thing, but I don't have access to that. I can put in a question to two medievalists (also Latinists) I know, if they'd be willing to help you find the part not covered in the Google book preview. It just seems like a waste of time and potentially dangerous to translate something which has already been annotated and published by a person who really knows the subject. I can't access that website, but you're right, we should use the translation by Janet Nelson here...I can't see pg. 44 on Google Books, but it's a direct translation of what's in the MGH. Is there a place where I can ask for help? The administrators (magisters) over at the latin wiki are a bit extreme, or cultic. I'm sure my grammar is correct but they seem to abuse this dub sig notifications. In this instance, there is no 'classic latin' word for identity. Identitas is considered new or medieval latin. This is not the only instance of abuse but there are others. The article was 'improved by the way' meaning a lot of the core ideas were simply removed. ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Ioscius. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
