World Scrabble Championship[edit]

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_English-Language_Scrabble_Players%27_Association they say "Following the establishment of Mind Sports International, the title 'World Scrabble Championship' was claimed by that entity for official world titles (sanctioned by Mattel under licence). WESPA has undertaken to host biennial world events from 2015 onwards using the old WSC format, with teams qualifying from national organisations."

Also one of the world's best players calls it a world championship here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47ynBJFz0MI&ab_channel=WillAnderson

I also cannot believe there hasn't been one since 2019. Having one every two years makes sense, like the old days, and there has been a WESPA champs every 2 years since 2015. By now in 2023 it should be official ;)

I would appreciate if you reinstate my one hour of hard work please. Sandman1142 (talk) 13:40, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but re-read what you posted above: "the title 'World Scrabble Championship' was claimed by that entity for official world titles (sanctioned by Mattel under licence)". Whatever WESPA has organised simply cannot be called a "World Scrabble Championship" thus has no basis for inclusion in a page on the official "World Scrabble Championship". This is Wikipedia, not Scrabble Wiki. More importantly, you need reliable third-party sources (Will's channel unfortunately does NOT count) to substantiate your claims. I understand that you spent much time on the edits but if that were the sole criterion for inclusion, then we'd hardly be able to remove ANYTHING! I do hope you understand KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 14:56, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK Let me ask https://scrabbleplayers.org/w/John_Chew. I will consider his word final. I will let you know if he responds.Sandman1142 (talk) 15:45, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While we await his reply, I am curious about this: Only the 2015 WESPA championship is allowed on the wiki. All the others are not official. Your opinion? Also, why do you say the others are 100% not official? Please share any info you might have. Sandman1142 (talk) 15:52, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please see this for instance [1] KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 16:02, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a matter of opinion, if you have a reliable third-party source describing the WESPAC events in any detail AND referring to them as "World Scrabble Championships", then perhaps the case could be made for their inclusion in the "World Scrabble Championship" article. There is no doubt the Scrabble community itself considers the WESPA events to be the de facto "world championships" with a small W, but that is unfortunately insufficient for purposes of notability. KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 16:05, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi you are right. Mattel has denied permission so it's just WESPAC. Could WESPAC events even be mentioned on that page? Otherwise they just get lost into oblivion. Here is John's gracious reply which contains useful links.

Hi *****,

Thank you for your email. In brief, WESPA and NASPA do recognize both WESPA Champions and whomever Hasbro/Mattel designate as World Scrabble Champions to be world champions of Scrabble, and I believe that this recognition is widespread in the global competitive Scrabble community.

To expand a little further on this: WESPA started organizing its WESPA Championship when it appeared that Mattel had stopped organizing its World Scrabble Championship in favour of an open Scrabble Champions Tournament. Mattel then resumed licensing World Scrabble Championships, but in a very different format from earlier events under that name, and the player community decided that they would prefer to continue with the traditional invitational format. WESPA asked Mattel if they could continue to hold traditional World Scrabble Championships under that name; Mattel has so far denied permission, and WESPA has therefore staged them under the name WESPA Championship.

To dive deeper into this, please see our website at https://www.scrabbleplayers.org/w/World_SCRABBLE_Championship which I have just updated with a few more details to respond more directly to your questions. Please let me know if it leaves any other questions open that you would like answered.

For confirmation that WESPA recognizes different champions, see their webpage: https://www.wespa.org/winners.shtml

For links that might help with notability concerns, see our media archive: http://scrabbleplayers.org/w/Media_relations

Finally, for links to draft Wikipedia pages that I drew up for WESPAC 2017 and WESPAC 2019 in preparation for WESPAC 2023, see my user talk page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Poslfit for the messages sending them to draft space.

Regards,

JohnSandman1142 (talk) 20:53, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sandman,
Please see the concluding sentence of my last reply: "There is no doubt the Scrabble community itself considers the WESPA events to be the de facto "world championships" with a small W, but that is unfortunately insufficient for purposes of notability."
I fully agree with John that "... this recognition is widespread in the global competitive Scrabble community." Once again, however, this is not a wiki for Scrabble fandom and what the Scrabble community considers to be "notable" may not in fact be notable per Wikipedia's notability guidelines. The post-2015 WESPAC events simply do not meet WP:GNG at this point, so they must, as you put it, "get lost in oblivion". That is why Poslfit's articles were sent to the draftspace... Above all else, I hope that one day there will be a reliable third-party source laying out Mattel's refusal of permission. But that day has yet to come. Cheers, KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 03:55, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. John sent me a further email. Would it be possible to list WESPAC on the World Scrabble Championship page under a heading "Unofficial World Scrabble Championship" and a new table? Worst case is that I can move those table edits I did onto the WESPA page and just make a mention of the politics on the main page. Please advise which option would be allowed. John's email:

"It is the legal position of the brand owners that for anyone to call an event simply the World Scrabble Championship, they would need to get permission from both Hasbro (which owns rights to the brand in Canada and the United States) and Mattel (which owns the rights elsewhere). This permission has not been granted since 2011, and there have been various workarounds ever since, all of which are considered to varying degrees official. So, the events called "Scrabble Champions Tournament", "MSI World Scrabble Championship", "Mattel World Scrabble Championship", and "World English Scrabble Players Association Championship" are all lacking some degree of official approval (from Hasbro, Mattel, or both), but all have some degree of official sanction (from Mattel and/or WESPA), and are considered equivalent by the players themselves. I would be inclined to list them all on one page, and just indicate which bodies recognize which titles." Sandman1142 (talk) 07:37, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As I have repeatedly said, it would not be appropriate as far as WP:GNG and WP:V are concerned. As far as I am aware, reliable/independent/third-party sources covering the post-2015 WESPA do not exist. This is not Scrabble Wikia and the WSC article really should not be an indiscriminate repository of all things related to "world Scrabble". I understand you put in a lot of effort into the edits and I would suggest that you reproduce them in a Wiki dedicated to Scrabble, not Wikipedia.KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 09:21, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, so I did say worst case is I add the table of WESPAC into this place: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_English-Language_Scrabble_Players%27_Association#tournaments. If there is already a proper WESPA article on Wikipedia, I don't see why adding WESPAC table entries into this article is a problem. Sandman1142 (talk) 09:45, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Friendly request[edit]

Hey Kingoflettuce. I wanted to say thank you for bringing to my attention that I was badgering. I will be completely honest, I didn't even realize how many replies I had in the conversation. That said, I really don't appreciate the subtle near personal attack when you requested I be censored. I self-assessed after you pinged me about that and I actually hadn't commented any further in the discussion and I don't plan to. Noting, I did comment (small text edit) on your reply. I wanted to offer a WP:MUTUAL. You strike/withdraw the statement about censoring me, I withdraw the small-text comment, where I pointed out the near PA and then don't respond further in the discussion, just as I had planned to. Sound good? The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 22:12, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for writing to me WeatherWriter: I requested that you be censured (which to me amounts to no more than a trout slap)... I defo was not calling for any censorship! (And I fail to see how either case would be a "personal attack" in the sense of criticising anything apart from your edits on the talk page...) Anyhow, I had meant to !vote right after making the initial comment but was unable to immediately do so. I hope my two comments in the discussion can be taken collectively: I certainly did not monitor the discussion for x hours and make the new comment in spite of your withdrawal from the discussion. But your point is taken and I appreciate that you have since stopped replying to new !votes. I have edited my comment and I hope you may forgive me for unduly calling you out a second time. Cheers, KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 22:37, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah don’t sweat it! I have the habit (a good/bad one) of taking things more literally (i.e. word-for-word), just because I research and write about weather disasters so much. It’s hard to not take a statement from a news organization of a “town half destroyed”, when a strong tornado that is 1 mile (1.6 km) wide hits a 2 miles (3.2 km) town. I wasn’t trying to come off of assuming bad faith at all. From my perspective (the more literal word-for-word one), someone pointed out I was commenting too much, so I stopped. Then see a comment of “censor” after stopping. Trust me, it is all good! That is a habit that I have been trying to keep only during weather-disaster articles. I am really sorry if I came off as assuming bad faith. Either way, I’m happy the problem and confusion is solved! Have an amazing day and keep up the amazing work on Wikipedia! Cheers! WikiCup 2024 February newsletter[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi! I just stumbled across this unreferenced one-liner page created by you. I would like to redirect it to List of administrative divisions of Anhui as WP:NOTDATABASE. However, I realized that in that list, "Chuxian" is mentioned as a former prefecture, and not a current county. Is "Chuxian County" the correct name for this administrative division? And what was the rationale for creating such page with little to no information and no sources? Broc (talk) 10:55, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) According to zh:滁縣, it is a former county. Perhaps best to mention in and redirect to Chuzhou? —Kusma (talk) 11:17, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kusma thanks for your input! In that case, the information we have on en.wp is inaccurate at best. Unfortunately I don't speak Chinese nor understand the administrative divisions of China well enough to trust myself with these edits, I found this page while WP:RANPP. Any chance you would like to take care of it? :) Broc (talk) 11:34, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Broc: Actually, you were right with both the redirect target and your question about the name. The correct name is "Chu County" ("xian" with that character is just "county"), and it is mentioned under that name at List_of_administrative_divisions_of_Anhui#Recent_changes_in_administrative_divisions. Perhaps redirecting there is best. —Kusma (talk) 12:13, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KusmaI changed the target of the pages in which this name was used from Chuxian County to Chu County, a newly created redirect to the list you mentioned. Should Chuxian County be deleted, given the name is wrong? I tagged Chuxian County with {{R from incorrect name}}. Broc (talk) 14:33, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! Thank you @Broc for your work on this. —Kusma (talk) 15:27, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Huapi stamp.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Huapi stamp.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:04, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Stealing-peaches.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Stealing-peaches.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:38, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
