This is already your third barnstar regarding your work on the Scots Wikipedia. The past 24 hours must have been really stressful for you, and you've even gone as far as to take a break from work to deal with this. I've also seen that you've been getting backlash on Reddit, and I also saw the message you got on Reddit that you posted on Twitter. Moreover, you've been talking to some news sites to act as sco's de facto PR. Talking to news websites, starting up an AMA, dealing with discussions on Meta, and handling the abusive words of internet trolls who have nothing better to do with their lives, all in the span of a day. That's gotta take some hardcore dedication.

You've received a lot of barnstars, but here's another one, to commend you for your being able to step up in the midst of internet backlash. You deserve it now more than ever. This could blow over relatively soon (and I hope it does), but history (at least for Wikimedia) will definitely remember your efforts.

I'm probably using a barnstar meant for English Wikipedia admins, but eh, I don't care.

Yeah, Vice & the NY Post's articles were tabloidy and horrible and just wrong. I'd say the Vice article's biggest crime is mixing up the time and over-emphasizing the amount of actionable negative feedback AG received before the incident, really - outsiders don't understand that two people showing up on your talk page to yell at you is the price of doing business, and quite under expectations for seven years of editing. @SnowFire: No, I would really say the biggest crime was misunderstanding the Scots. Factual inaccuracies, like the one you just mentioned, are expected and not damaging in the long term so long as the truth gets out there. However, misrepresenting what the Scots language even is can't be undone for anyone who has already read that article and walked away from it. It just shows how little they care, and I know they don't care because I emailed the reporter to explain this with no response. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 16:35, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is England Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by England Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were Gondor Hog Farm (submissions), Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions), Somerset Harrias (submissions) and Free Hong Kong Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Hello everyone and welcome to the 18th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:

Updated scripts Twinkle has made a number of improvements, including using a change tag to identify actions made with it and automatically filing edit requests for protected XfD nominations.
SD0001's shortdescs-in-category is now compatible with scripts modifying category listings, such as Equazcion's CatListMainTalkLinks
GhostInTheMachine's TalkHelper2 is a newer version of their prior script, TalkHelper
GeneralNotability's spihelper updated to 2.2.10, fixing a number of small bugs, automatically tagging globally locked socks as such in the sockpuppet template, and restoring open cases following an SPI history merge.
Enterprisey's script-installer gadget has been updated with more internationalization of messages, as well as addition of a user preference, window.scriptInstallerInstallTarget to allow controlling where new scripts are to be installed.

Advise on Abigail Shrier

Hi MJL. When you're not too busy, I was wondering if I could ask for your advise on Abigail Shrier. Apparently she's some sort of author/columnist who recently wrote a controversial book on transgenderism. Anyway, some user had been edit-warring in attempt to insert negative material or to 'debunk' the book in some way. By my count, 13 reverts within 24 hours:[1]. Every single one of their edits relied wholly on non-RSs or clear OR: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] (plus many more). Other uses, and myself, attempted the remove the BLP violations, but they wouldn't stop edit-warring. I eventually posted my concerns to the BLP Noticeboard. Shortly after that, an admin had enacted full page protection: [7]. I tried to explain to the editor on the TP that their actions violated multiple BLP policies, but they don't believe that they did anything wrong: [8]. The admin who enacted the protection was previously watching the page, but never made any attempt to revert the user's edits, or even issue a warning to the user. In fact, they reverted edits that were removed because they contained unreliable sources or OR; such as [9]--which clearly uses a SPS as a citation. I reached out to the admin and they said they are unable to take any actions against the editor, and they informed me that reporting the editor to WP:AN3 would be futile. I really don't know what to do. This is not a content dispute, and this editor has no business editing Abigail Shrier in any way. Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d (talk) 23:08, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

@Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d: have you wrote this user on their talk page? They seem to need some guidance regarding WP:RS since we don't accept YouTube as it's WP:USERGEN.
Conduct disputes are best brought first directly to the editor in question. They should be given the chance to change after having been given a polite explanation of what was done wrong. If they refuse to WP:LISTEN, then it can be taken to the wider community for review (however always be aware your own conduct will be examined).
If I wasn't on mobile, I could tell you more helpful advice (for example, I saw a buzzfeed source in that WP:REFBOMB but don't know if it actually brings up the article's subject). That's just the situation we're in.
Also, whatever you do, be nice and respectful. Oftentimes, new editors aren't even aware they are doing anything wrong. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 23:31, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
@MJL: "Nice" is my middle name . What's considered a "new editor"? They have been editing since 2018, and by the looks of it, they have created 46 pages. After they ignored my comments in the edit summaries, I issued them a warning template for edit-warring and for inserting non-RSs. Are warning templates nice? Perhaps not... But it seemed like a standard case of WP:IDIDNTHEARTHAT to me. However, I, and another editor, have been trying to camly explain to the user why their edits are no bueno on the article's TP. No luck so far... And no, the Buzzfeed source, nor do any of the other sources actually bring up the book or the subject. Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d (talk) 23:50, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Arbitration case evidence

Regarding these edits: I'm not sure why you're abbreviating the editor's user name, particularly in the section title and the pro forma links to the user page, talk page, and contributions? I feel it's a bit confusing, and possibly a bit inconsiderate to use an abbreviated form.

Regarding the statements, I'm not sure how they relates to the goal of determining what findings (if any) should be reached. Without any further connection provided, they seem like non sequiturs. isaacl (talk) 01:41, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Sure, but I feel it work better if you did those editing sessions in a local file or on a page in your own user space. If each edit doesn't work well as a standalone submission, then it imposes less cognitive load on those following the evidence if you avoid breaking up the related info into separate sessions. Regarding the user's name, as someone who has in the past raised concerns about how you were referred to, I hope you can appreciate that it can be a sensitive matter to use alternate labels, especially in places where it's conventional to use the full user name. isaacl (talk) 22:28, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

I said so with evidence. On IHateAccount's own talk page they received a warning for linking to someone's twitter that they were arguing with "doxing" Sorry, but when said person goes through my edit history and reverts said edits and contributes nothing to the page that is spiteful stalking. Sorry for the yawn, but I find their petty actions of not actually debating to be pointless and not respectful. Finally regarding the comment I found it sad that said person complained of abusive comments when they are the one who was doing "abusive actions". If you are speaking on said person's behalf then inform them to knock it off and learn to debate with people they disagree with. 3Kingdoms (talk) 22:36, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

I would like to say that I am sorry for the claim of doxing on IHA, it was an uncharitable reading of what was an honest mistake on their part and me assuming the worst, I removed said accusations from where I posted it since it should not be kept up. This was in part due to my annoyance at what I found to be the Wikipedia:Harassment by IHA on me and uncharitable reading of my own opinions, however two wrongs don't make a right. Since you have been contact with IHA, if it were possibly could you rely this to them, since I feel as another editor said, there should be a cooling off between the two of us.
