Re: Good Article Nom for CT Special Forces: Back to Hell[edit]

I suggest you expand the reception section far more. There are numerous reviews not mentioned or used. It can go on for at least a few more paragraphs if organized cohesively, that could be a basic sticking point if the game gets reviewed. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:14, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I went ahead and expanded it and organized it by theme (and added a GameZone review). Worth mentioning on my end though that I didn't add a lot more sources other than that because I really haven't found them. I'd love to include Nintendo Power, but I haven't been able to find a scan of the original and I'm loathe to just include the quote from MetaCritic. The other articles all seem to not be reliable sources -- so for now I've kept it a bit limited. Nomader (talk) 13:52, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the Nintendo Power mention: [1] Weirdly though, it doesn't seem to be on the page stated in Metacritic, nor have the same wording.
Anyway, the manual is also here in case you want to directly reference it for gameplay information... ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 08:05, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wild how weak this manual is for a game released of the time. The reviews had more detailed gameplay information IMO -- the only thing really worth adding from it here are the character names and abilities. (Also thank you for finding this! The Nintendo Power mention seems to be a preview, so there must be a review in another one somewhere? Still can include this though too). Thanks for the help! DYK for Lydian-Milesian War[edit]

Hi, in reviewing my DYK you made two points for improvement;

  • every paragraph has to have at least one source
  • the hook itself isn't cited outside of a quote [...] and then also note that the article doesn't say "party".

I believe I have completed the first point, but perhaps I missed something.

As for the second point, I'm not sure I quite understood the first part. Should I write an additional paragraph explaining the quote in the article. And concerning the second part, I believe that a party/celebration was meant: "[he] bade the men of Miletus all drink and revel together when he should give the word." (Herodotus Histories Vol. I of the Loeb Classical Library edition, 1920, p.25); "[he] told the men of Miletus all to drink and celebrate together when he gave the word." (Herodotus, with an English translation by A. D. Godley. Cambridge. Harvard University Press. 1920.); "[he] issued an order that the Milesians should hold themselves in readiness, and, when he gave the signal, should, one and all, fall to drinking and revelry." (Herodotus, Histories, translated by George Rawlinson)

I chose the word 'party' as a translation of 'revelry' since it is more modern and adds to the intrigue of the story. However, the Greek word used (κώμῳ) means something along the lines of feast, or as you put it, banquet, but also 'drinkgelag' (it's a Dutch dictionary, apologies) which means 'drinking party' Please let me know what else I have to improve (In general too, this is my first real in-depth article, and although I'm quite happy with the C-grade it received, I would love to get an even higher rating). Many thanks, and we'll be in touch! P.S. I wasn't sure if this was the right place to contact you, please say so if there is another place. The article CT Special Forces: Back to Hell you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:CT Special Forces: Back to Hell for comments about the article, and Talk:CT Special Forces: Back to Hell/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. DYK for Get Up and Dance[edit]

On 16 April 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Get Up and Dance, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a filing for a temporary restraining order to stop the release of Get Up and Dance in the United States by the publisher of the Just Dance series was denied? Lydian-Milesian War DYK and further improvements[edit]

Hi Nomader, I believe I adequately improved my DYK nomination to fit all the requirements. I wrote an additional paragraph for the article explaining the different translations. I'm not sure what source I should use, but I believe there are multiple in this paragraph that could be used.

As for further improvements to my article, what do you think would make it better? Maybe an additional map? Sorry I couldn't ping you back sooner, I am currently learning for my finals. Thanks!

Kind regards GeneralCraft65 (talk) 12:10, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I went ahead and approved the hook, I'd say that you went above and beyond here but it answered my questions. Thanks so much! I think the multiple does nicely in summarizing the situation.
As for other suggestions -- let me think on it for a bit. History (although it was my subject of study when I was in college) isn't my usual Wikipedia cup of tea, but I'd be happy to come up with some thoughts for you. Nomader (talk) 17:40, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much! This is my first time doing this, so I'm not sure what happens next. Could you quickly explain? I'm quite proud of this, so do I get a notification when the hook is on the main page? [I'd like to show it to my friends :) ] What time span should I think of?
As for the improvements, just help with formatting, sourcing or other Wiki-skills not normally used when writing a paper would be fantastic as well.
Cheers GeneralCraft65 (talk) 15:12, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So the next step is an uninvolved editor will come around, see that I've approved the article, and will then double check my work. Once they're good with it, they'll promote it to DYK queue -- once it's been moved over, the nomination page will be marked as "promoted" by the editor (you can see how the nomination page will look here with an example from one of mine). It will then appear on the DYK queue page, which specifies what time each tranche of hooks will run if you scroll down to "local update times" so you can tell your friends exactly when it'll run!
It could take a week or two to get to the point when it runs, and when it does, you'll be given a notification on your talk page. Hooks usually run for 12 hours at a time, but can sometimes be more frequent if there's a big backlog. Hope this all helps! Nomader (talk) 15:19, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
