Patani and Pattani

[edit]

Patani is the name of a region in southern Thailand formerly known as the Malay Kingdom of Patani or Patani Raya (Greater Patani). The language used in the region called Patani Malay. After 1902, the Thai government devided the region to Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, a part of Songkhla and Satun.

The language used in the region is "Patani Malay" (not "Pattani Malay" nor "Yawi"). Yawi is a misspronounciation of the word "Jawi" (Thai has no J) .

Pattani is the name of a province in Patani Raya under the Thai administration.

However, many do not know the distinguish between the two words.

are you sure you are not simply pushing your POV and Malaynized the word Pattani? Anyway, edits causing bad links.__earth 08:44, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Malaynized the word Patani? No, No, No...

The word has been used in European languages hundreds of years before the word Pattani. You see that I do not edit the word Pattani if it means the present Pattani province. Please use google.com to search the word Patani and Pattani and compare. Here are some examples:

Patani United Liberation Organisation, a famous separatist movement

Patani Malay Human Rights Organisation at www.phmro.org

Hikayat Patani (the story of Patani) by D.K. Wyatt.

Hikayat Patani Manuscript at http://www.anu.edu.au/asianstudies/proudfoot/MCP/N/PAT_bib.html

History of the Malay Kingdom of Patani by Ibrahim Syukri.

Thank you for your question.

Why are you changing Pattani into Patani? __earth 05:54, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

Hello Pataniraya, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

As you are from Thailand, the Thailand-related topics notice board is probably of interest for you. There are some other active users (mostly farang) who edit Thai topics, and for coordination that page is a good central meeting point.

As I just stumbled on your new short article Selindung Bayu - it may be better to make it a redirect to Saiburi, and then write about the Malay name in that article, together with information on the district etc. andy 07:52, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
