Leonardo
[edit]Thank you for your comments about the status of Leonardo's father, and the use of "Ser Piero" against "Messer Piero". I think that you are right but that "Sir Piero" is taking it a bit far, because it implies "an honour" made by a ruler. The nearest British equivalent that I can come up with is "Esquire", which implies a gentleman of property and worth, rather than a tradesman or labourer.
"Ser" is merely an abbrieviation of "Messer". The significant thing here is not so much the word itself, as its inclusion in his name. "Son of a gentleman". It was more common to just have "de Piero".
Can you please find the whole reference and put it with your comment: Author, title, Publisher, date, ISBN, page number?
