What is your connection to IT, the International Tennis Federation? ==Orange Mike | Talk 07:00, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

none. the international tennis federation is the ITF. i am the IT girl (a nick name because i help people with their computer issues). the "t" stands for technology, not tennis. i just helped someone update his wikipedia page because he has a new book coming out, which happens to be about tennis. can you unblock or change the user name please?

Orangemike, I am strongly inclined to unblock, unless you object. It is worth noting that "It girl" was a common expression in the 1920s and 1930s, meaning "an attractive young woman". I take it that this is a pun on that phrase. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 13:08, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As a historian, I'm quite familiar with Clara Bow, "The 'It' Girl", who was famed for having "It" (a coy way of referring to sex appeal, itself often euphemized to "S.A.")! --Orange Mike | Talk 15:53, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

yes! thank you DESiegel. the reference is more to multiple talents than looks (but thanks!) and yes, it is a pun on "information technology." i expect the next and only time i will edit that page again is when his book comes out and i can note that he is the author of...

On the other hand, there is This, which would make even the trimmed name a WP:CORPNAME --Deep fried okra (schalte ein) 14:50, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm that does pose more of a problem. It is true that WP:CORPNAME says: A user who both adopts a promotional username and also engages in inappropriately promotional behaviors in articles about the company, group, or product, can be blocked.(emphasis in original( and I don';t see any such promotional editing from this user as yet. But given that this does seem to be the name of a business (I am not asking if it is your business or not) it might be better to change it to either a clearly individual user name such as "<name>, the IT girl" or better a name not related to that business at all. @Deepfriedokra: DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 15:05, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DESiegel: That would be a SPAMUBLOCK. This is a SOFTERBLOCK, "we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website". --Deep fried okra (schalte ein) 15:24, 17 June 2020 (UTC) Also, (had to track it down) A soft account block (autoblock disabled, account creation allowed) will only block the specific account from editing. An autoblock is not applied to the IP address the account last used, and other accounts that log in from the IP address are allowed to edit as normal. This is generally used in situations such as blocking promotional usernames or to enforce other username policy violations. This allows the blocked account to register a new account with a username that is in compliance with the username policy, or simply choose to edit anonymously under the IP if they decide not to do so. Cheers, --Deep fried okra (schalte ein) 15:29, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The company/website puts it in CORPNAME territory, regardless of whether that "IT Girl LLC" is our "IT Girl LLC" or no. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:53, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your input everybody and i respect your policies. i had no idea this would be such an issue. i will just change my username or create a new account, if i ever need to update anything!

June 2020[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy or request a change of username.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text

{{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

at the bottom of your talk page. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names.

 Thank you. Orange Mike | Talk 04:23, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
