This is the topic list for the September–October 2023 West Coast Wikipedian at Large, reflecting the areas Development West Coast would most like to see improved— attractions in the Karamea area, tourism on the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, and the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, breeding ground of kōtuku.

The project ran from 11 September to 20 October, and included:

  • Online training for new editors and Commons photographers in the first three weeks (sessions on main page).
  • Volunteer "postcards" (see Postcards from the Coast for examples)
  • Weekly reports of uploads, edits, and improvements on Fridays (see 2022 Weekly Progress for examples)
  • On-site work (NZers were welcome to join me on location during these photography/research field trips):
  • Final report after a wrap-up meeting of participants on Sunday 12 Nov, 2:30 pm. FInal report still to come, as we're still processing photos received in the January Karamea visit.
  • During the project we created eight new articles, and 113 articles were edited by 11 editors, who added 27,000 words and 217 references. Those articles had 42,000 views since the project began up to early November 2023. Over 400 photos were uploaded to Commons.
  • A visit to Karamea had to be cancelled, but a follow-up trip was planned for January 2024, which will involve more article creation, improvement, and photo uploading.

Participants (2023)[edit]

If you're a Wikimedia volunteer and would like to assist with the 2023 project, feel free to add your name below. You'll receive a regular update listing priority topics, newly-uploaded images available for use, and Wikidata tasks to check off. There will be West-Coast-themed prizes for the most and best contributions by volunteers!

Here's the project dashboard. If you're joining us after the project started, add yourself to the dashboard here (it only tracks West-Coast-related edits).

The kōtuku colony[edit]

The Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, breeding ground of kōtuku, needs its own article covering all the ornithological research and surveying that's gone on there, as well as recent tourism. This should be linked from the kōtuku article, which should be expanded to cover Eastern Great Egrets across their range, as well as the breeding colony in NZ; which is not at Ōkārito Lagoon, despite what the article says!

Whites Aviation photos of these areas[edit]

Whites Aviation was an aerial photography company who took pictures all over New Zealand in the 1940s–70s. The National Library of New Zealand purchased the copyright along with the collection (described here), and have released the aerial photographs under an open CC-BY licence. There are only a few uploaded at the moment: Category:Whites_Aviation. It would be great to add all the photos of the West Coast areas listed below to Commons, with good metadata and categories, and use them on the target articles. Possible Wikiblitz?
