Curiousness over at Playstation (console)

[edit]

I noticed that in the PlayStation_console#Development section just after where it says "The PlayStation was also known as the PS-X" there is a spurious closing bracket - but looking at the source, I cannot see where it comes from. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the {{ref}} etc tags, but I don't know much about them to investigate.

And secondly - why does the [edit] tab not appear next to "History" and "Development"? I had to edit the entire document to view the Development source. I'm using Firefox, but I see the same behaviour with IE as well. Chaheel Riens (talk) 09:51, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's caused by this code:
  • {{#tag:ref|PS-X (PlayStation Experimental) was an internal code name for the PlayStation during development.<ref>{{cite web |title=The Making Of: PlayStation |url=http://www.next-gen.biz/features/making-playstation |archiveurl= |work=Edge |publisher=Future Publishing |page=5 |date=24 April 2009 |accessdate=27 September 2009 |quote=SCEA hated the name and wanted to change it to PSX, a contraction of the project’s codename […] the US nevertheless went ahead with early trade promotion, calling it PSX,|ref= }}</ref> The popular use of the "PSX" abbreviation outside Sony became a source of confusion when Sony Of Japan ignored Sony of America's decision and introduced its [[PSX (DVR)|PSX]] digital video recorder in 2003.}}|lead=yes}}
I've not encountered anything like that before and have no idea how to fix it...Jenova20 (email) 10:05, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That was tricky but I fixed it by adding a missing }} in the opening sentence.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:15, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article protection

[edit]

Ben Loyd-Holmes (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I am currently looking after the page of Ben Loyd Holmes, and a few days ago, the page was vandalised.

I would like some help with making this page Semi-Protected so this doesnt happen again?

Please advise

Thanks

An isolated instance of vandalism isn't grounds for protection. If there is persistent vandalism, then see Wikipedia:Protection policy. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:44, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

VAT rules

How we can bill an external battery of UPS under Kerala Vat Rules? Is it Billed as UPS in 5% Kvat or need to bill battery seperately? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.174.211.65 (talk) 12:12, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:18, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

deletion query

why was the J.M. Ledgard link deleted after several years - what can be done to improve if it erred — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eternautical (talkcontribs) 14:48, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article on J. M. Ledgard was deleted yesterday. The reason given was "G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion: copyright violation". The article on his novel Giraffe still exists. Maproom (talk) 15:07, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did You Know...

[edit]

should be renamed "Does Anyone Care..." as long as you keep including information about the high scorer of the University of Michigan Women's Croquet Team in 1984, and similar stories.

Seriously.

Stop it.

This is such a great ice breaker to get folks to browse the wiki, and those banal posts are ruining the fun. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.115.155.56 (talk) 15:30, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Slow news day? Apteva (talk) 15:33, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, why don't you create an account and write some articles about less "banal" subjects?--ukexpat (talk) 19:03, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's not the problem, we have plenty of articles on subjects that are not banal. I think 143 is criticising the selection process. Maproom (talk) 20:43, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then they should get involved at Template talk:Did you know .--ukexpat (talk) 20:56, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are individuals out there who find women's croquet trivia enlightened and interesting. Perhaps you should broaden your horizons some 143.115.155.56. :-). Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 21:01, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need list of comparison chart pages

[edit]

I'm interested in using info from the charts on comparison pages like: Comparison of project management software

1. Is is legal to use this information for a software product I want to sell?

2. Can I get a list of all such pages? I may just use ones that pertain to software, but I'm interested in knowing what others exist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spazmoleo (talkcontribs) 17:53, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can reuse Wikipedia content subject to the terms set out at WP:REUSE.--ukexpat (talk) 19:00, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For the second question, this search finds all articles whose title contains the phrase "comparison of". -- John of Reading (talk) 20:27, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello- I've tried submitting a new entry for "David Crane" but it does not seem to be going through. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks Aaron — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aaronmclear (talkcontribs) 18:13, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia! First please remember to add ~~~~ to the end of your post so we may see your "signature" and link to your talk page/user page, small but important point. What may assist you is the Wikipedia:Article wizard and also (though some of it you have already done like registering) the Wikipedia:Your first article may help. Remember that you also have the ability to slowly "build" an article on your Wikipedia:About the Sandbox and Wikipedia:Subpages at which point you may get the feedback of other editors at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Hope this assists you. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 18:44, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As it says at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/David Crane, it may take a week or more for your draft to be reviewed. One area which you need to look at is referencing; please read WP:Referencing for beginners. You also seem to have duplicated the contents, so you ought to tidy that up. - David Biddulph (talk) 20:37, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to improve article so that tags (needs citations) and (reads like a news release) can be removed

[edit]

Hello, we are trying hard to improve the article on author Jeffrey Robinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Robinson) by adding citations that will fulfill, hopefully, whatever is required to have the two tags removed from the top of the article (needs citations) and (reads like a news release). As this is on going, with more citations to come, could we ask, please, that someone take a look at the article and give us an indication of how we're doing and what else needs to be done to see the removal of the tags. In advance, many thanks/ lnfforjr — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lnfforjr (talkcontribs) 18:16, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I find it amusing that a successful writer has apparently employed Lnfforjr to write a Wikipedia article about him, and Lnfforjr has done it so badly that he has to call on amateurs for help. Maproom (talk) 21:25, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance needed to fix incorrect information in Accenture article

[edit]

Hello, I'm currently working on behalf of Accenture to help improve their article here on Wikipedia and I noticed today that some information has been added to the article that is factually incorrect, and very concerning for the company. A user added a section called "Recent news" consisting of a single sentence: "In July 2013, Accenture announced it was in talks to acquire its rival Booz & Company." This statement is incorrect: Accenture has made no such announcement, and the Reuters source used here does not say that it has. While the Reuters article repeats speculative reports from the Wall Street Journal that Accenture and Booz are in talks it does not say Accenture announced these talks. I'd like to request that this sentence either be removed completely, or changed to read "In July 2013, Reuters reported that Accenture was in talks to acquire its rival Booz and Company." Due to my financial COI I won't make any direct edits to the article myself, so I need help from another editor to make the change.

Although I have posted a request to the article's Talk page, I'm also looking for help here as this incorrect information is a concern to the company that they'd like to get sorted out as soon as possible. Thanks, ChrisPond (Talk · COI) 18:25, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ChrisPond, since many article talk pages can be ghost towns with which you wait days if not weeks for even a reply I would recommend posting to all of the Wikiproject talk pages such as Companies and Business, even Chicago and Ireland for interested editors who are familiar with Accenture. If I get time later today I will see if I can help however it might be best to get an editor who is more well versed in the details on one of those wikiprojects. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 18:56, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! If you have a chance to take a look, that would be great, but if not, I plan on reaching out to a few Projects tomorrow. Cheers, ChrisPond (Talk · COI) 19:06, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

long web address

[edit]

I have this horribly long web address that Wiki hates when I put it in a citation: long address collapsed

Any way I can get Wiki to accept it? Ted Sidpickle (talk) 18:35, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another method that can be used is to create a tinyurl. But the first step, as indicated, is just strip out whatever is not needed and still provides a useful link. Question, was that the new Visual Editor that was rejecting it? Apteva (talk) 21:19, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
tinyurl is blacklisted so links to it cannot be saved. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:07, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No don't use tinyurl or any other URL redirection site as per Wikipedia:External links#Redirection sites. Most of them are blacklisted anyway. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 23:05, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, the shortened version works a treat. Ted Sidpickle (talk) 05:48, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I used the shortened version in the article Daniel James (businessman) in the section "Cotton Famine Relief". It seems to work OK but on my PC when I jump to the report in Google Book and then hit the return arrow top of page right hand corner, it takes me back to my Contribution page and not the article. Even worst, after I had carried out the edit and saved it, the bounce back went to my article edit screen which is a bit worrying. I then tried from my wife's computer and it seems OK and reacted as expected. Would you please try it and see what happens.

Ted Sidpickle (talk) 13:43, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
