Deletion

[edit]

Why is my Wikipedia page is set for deletion? What do we need to do to keep it on Wikipedia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oton — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.83.14.219 (talk) 00:42, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question reformatted for readibility, and header added --ColinFine (talk) 00:49, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The nomination, and the arguments ranged, are visible at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oton. In order for the article to be kept, you would need to successfully argue against the points there, which you can probably only do if 1) the company has actually manufactured and delivered the thing, 2) several reliable sources independent of the company write about it, and 3) somebody writes the article in a neutral, non-promotional way. Good luck. --ColinFine (talk) 00:54, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

rude comments on TV

[edit]

I never cared that much for you but that rude and nasty comment on tv (which I don;t even believe they let on tv) was the rudest thing. You should be ashahamed and if anything u should be explaining the clam thing to your self. Very rude.............................................. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.58.73.172 (talk) 01:30, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When was Wikipedia on TV being rude? I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Want to publish an article

[edit]

Hi Wikipedia, I am trying to write an article about Melody Publishing Company in Taiwan. However, I tried to find as many references as I can, but there are no result that can support my article. Yet, I did conduct an online interview with Melody Punishing Company CEO Cindy Lee. What can I do to be able to publish the article?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pedro-Li08 (talkcontribs) 01:44, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid you're just going to have to wait until the rest of the world notices this company. That is, once people who have nothing to do with it have published in-depth, reliable source text about the company, then you can create an article. Not before. That you interviewed the CEO isn't really relevant here. The only thing that matters is what the quantity of reliable, independent source text exists in the world. If there isn't enough to support a decent Wikipedia article, then there shouldn't be a Wikipedia article. --Jayron32 02:32, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to create Template:Location map Eastern Bloc?

[edit]

I want to create this template, or improve Template:Location map Soviet Union, but encountered difficulties: I don't know where I can find blank map of Eastern Bloc (At least Russia+Beralus+Ukraine+Lativa+Kazakstan+Czech Republic+Slovakia) which is detailed to Oblast-level and orthographic projection (like Russia edcp location map.svg). Besides, I don't know how x and y are calculated in Template:Location map Russia or similar. ibicdlcod (talk) 02:46, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I made a few edits and tried to upload two pictures which I submitted the copyright ownership on and they have not uploaded. I would Also like to see my middle initial (L) deleted from the page, if possible.

Thanks for an update. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OddsMan (talkcontribs) 02:59, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, it isn't your page. We don't own articles here at Wikipedia. (see WP:OWN) Wikipedia is meant to be edited by many people so that we can all make improvements as we see fit.
Second, it is highly recommended that you not write about yourself. (see WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY) People generally have a hard time writing about themselves in a neutral and balanced way by bringing up both their praises and their criticisms.
>All I did was cut down on what sounded like hype from the original, over-enthusiastic writer.>OddsManOddsMan (talk) 22:14, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Third, I've looked at your contributions and don't see where you've uploaded any images, either here or at WikiMedia Commons. Though I do see where you asked about submitting the photos at the Commons Help Desk. That Help Desk, as well as this one, is staffed by volunteers who answer questions when they can. The best that I can suggest is to wait for a reply there. I don't know how active that desk is since I don't use it that often.
>>Is there anything in question? There appear to be an emormous number of cites?>OddsManOddsMan (talk) 22:14, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And finally, when the page is approved and finally moved to its location in the main space of the encyclopedia, it can be moved to a title without the middle initial. For right now, it's best to keep it where it is (with the middle initial) to not confuse matters. Dismas|(talk) 05:16, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to be a registered user to upload images. If you're affiliated with the company, it's usually better if you don't edit the article directly but instead leave a note on the article's talk page (see WP:COI). RudolfRed (talk) 04:01, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Guidelines for cutting out copywritten text?

[edit]

Is there a guideline for how to handle pages that have sections of text copies almost verbatim from copywritten works without attribution? I came across that recently while researching a subject and am not sure if just cutting out lots of text and putting "removed for copy right violations" on the reason for the edit will be enough. Shall I cite the works, author, page number, etc? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TracyWhite (talkcontribs) 04:03, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! There's a good set of instructions at Wikipedia:Text Copyright Violations 101 that I always find helpful. :) But the quick version is that it is normally ok just to remove the problematic text, although I add in the edit summary where it was copied from, and add {{subst:cclean|url=link to the source text}} to the talk page. Otherwise you can always raise it at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. If you get the chance, and you can work out who added it, then it is worth stopping by their talk to explain the problem, as most of this is inadvertently added by people who don't understand the copyright requirements yet, so an explanation is often very helpful.- Bilby (talk) 04:18, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Hey Tracy. Among others, please see Wikipedia:Copyright violations for guidance, Wikipedia:Copyright problems where you can report problem articles and Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations where you can request investigation of the individual who infringed if it appears they are a repeat offender. If you drop me a line on my talk page specifying the article and the source, I'd be happy to help if needed.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:25, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Grammatical Error in Article on "David Geffen."

[edit]

Under the search for "David Geffen" in the subtitle "Politics" there is a grammatical error. The last sentence of that segment reads, "Along with other celebrities including Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt, Geffen donated money to try prevent Proposition 8 from becoming law in California."

I believe that it should read like this, "Along with other celebrities including Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt, Geffen donated money to try (and) prevent Proposition 8 from becoming law in California."

Also, I am an English major who has just come back from teaching in Changwon, South Korea, and am looking for a job if you have any possible interest in me.

Proposed New Article: "Widney Origins"

[edit]

This article, currently in my sandbox, relates to the historical origins of a family which founded the village of Concord in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but about whom certain misconceptions have been popularly believed and widely circulated. The article is an adaptation of a web page I authored in 2011 and uploaded to my own domain, www.house-of-lynn.com. I would like to make the information contained therein more readily available to the world at large since my site does not get the kind of exposure that both the article and descendants of this family deserve. I am ready to submit the article for publication at Wikipedia, and my question is this ... Can someone email me at the address on the page where the article currently appears to confirm that I am the author thereof, so that we can avoid any concerns about copyright or plagiarism? That URL is http://www.house-of-lynn.com/Widney_Woodney_Udny_of_Ireland.html. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annlynn9 (talkcontribs) 06:34, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The process, if you wish to donate copyright materials, is at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. - David Biddulph (talk) 06:47, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can attach to your own page the same copyleft notice that's at the foot of a Wikipedia page. ¶ That's the easy part. The worrisome part is the content. When I look at User:Annlynn9/sandbox, I'm hard pressed to say how it's encyclopedic, given that WP is only in unusual cases a genealogical encyclopedia. It is so for the so-called nobility (a fact that mystifies me), for the US quasi-nobility (e.g. Family of Barack Obama), and for the otherwise interestingly dynastic (e.g. Template:Kim Jong-il family). Now, I'm sure that the Widneys (and Udnys and so forth) are no less deserving of an article than are my own ancestors or those of most other people; but I have trouble understanding how they are more deserving. If it's that they "founded the village of Concord in Franklin County, Pennsylvania", then I'd point out that the article on Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania fails even to mention anybody called Widney or Udny. ¶ I note that you say "my site does not get the kind of exposure that both the article and descendants of this family deserve", and wonder what this means. Search engine results are really no concern of Wikipedia, but anyway I tried Google for "widney surname origins" (sans quotation marks) and your page came at the top of the pile. (The infamous Google "search bubble" should have no effect here, as I rarely if ever make searches that are at all relevant to this one.) ¶ If you're interested in the early history of Concord, you may wish to edit the article about it; as it is, the history section within it is completely unsourced. -- Hoary (talk) 07:45, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Replies to David Biddulph and Hoary re: Widney Origins

[edit]

Thank you both for the advice about donating copyrighted materials. Hoary, it didn't occur to me that the Widneys might be undeserving of an article at Wikipedia since Wikipedia does have articles about two prominent members of the family, proven to be descendants of the very Widneys I discuss (though the articles do not say so). The articles are at Joseph Widney and Robert M. Widney. Also, as mentioned in my original query, the Concord which the Widneys founded is in Franklin - not Delaware - County, Pennsylvania. Perhaps it would help if I mention these gentlemen in my article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annlynn9 (talkcontribs) 14:30, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is a WIkipedia policy "notability is not inherited". I would interpret this as meaning, not only that descendants of a notable person are not thereby notable, but that ancestors of a notable person are not thereby notable. Maproom (talk) 15:27, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for mixing up the counties. I take it that the main achievement of the Widneys was to found a place called Concord in Franklin County, PA. Now, if they'd instead founded, say, Philadelphia, PA, readers would perk up. But this particular Concord is so obscure that it seems to have gone unmentioned in Wikipedia. (This is not to say that it doesn't merit an article. I claim no knowledge about this.) So I still see no reason why the Widneys merit an article here. (As for the notion that an article is merited on the family because two of its members have articles, I agree with Maproom.) ¶ If the Concord in Franklin County merits an article and if you have access to reliable, published sources for such an article, you may wish to create it. However, I strongly suggest that you do not create an article on the Widney family. Such an article would probably end up at "AFD", which you would find a dispiriting experience. -- Hoary (talk) 00:29, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I need to build a company page in order to be included on another page

[edit]

I work for Entuity, developer and global distributor of Network Management software. I noticed that there is a comparison page for network management software vendors and I believe that Entuity, in business for over 20 years, should be included on this comparison chart located here: Comparison of network monitoring systems.

Unfortunately, the guidelines for the comparison page clearly state that in order to be included on the comparison chart, the entrant must have a corresponding company page. I'd like to write a company page, but the guidelines for that state that it should not be written by a member of the company and also requires passing a notability test. I think that I can write the article and keep it neutral and I also think being in business selling network management software for 20 years is pretty notable.

I don't want to put a lot of effort into this page if it is just going to be deleted by an editor.

Am I or Am I not allowed to construct this Entuity article so I can also include my company information on the comparison page chart?

Thanks Eye2012 (talk) 15:12, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some people think you are allowed, and some people think you're not.
WP:PSCOI suggests that it would be acceptable for you to attempt to write such an article using WP:AFC. This would also have the advantage that it wouldn't be instantly deleted; instead it would be reviewed and either accepted or declined (and if it's declined you can improve it then submit it again).
Do be aware that the criterion for being accepted is not something as simple as "as good as other articles about IT companies", so you may need to put in more work than you expect. I can't find a good example at the moment; the Cisco, Juniper Networks and Avaya all have significantly more detailed references than you would need to get an article accepted, whereas the article Junos might have a little bit less than would be ideal to get accepted. The Puppet Labs article looks about right, although I do loathe all the non-independent references in there, and am a little suspicious of TechCrunch refs. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 15:23, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding two separate articles

[edit]

a.) I would very much appreciate some editing guidance. The Gwon Beop article may be well served by addressing each of the Boxing methods listed. IMHO this would mean 32 sub-chapters which may make the overall article unwieldy and bordering on a tome. Alternately each of the Boxing methods could be addressed as a separate article though perhaps of insufficient material, say about a paragraph. Is there some function in WIKI editing that might offer a reasonable compromise between the two options? Thoughts?

b.) I have recently noticed that there is a parallel article (Korean Sword) to the "Korean Swordsmanship" I have volunteered to edit. IMHO I believe that the article I am editing surpasses the other article in scholarship though the other article has material that would be of value in the article I am editing. How might these two articles be pulled together? Thoughts? --Bruce W Sims (talk) 23:54, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For your second question, you should read the guidance at WP:Merge RudolfRed (talk) 04:09, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For you first question - If a section within an article grows too large to fit comfortably it can be split to a separate article with just a brief summary being left in the "parent" article. The summary section in the "parent" article would usually include a link to the newly created "main article". Roger (talk) 07:05, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer. Just so I am sure I am understanding.... If the "methods" section of the Gwon Beop article would grow too large am I to understand that I could cull out that section as a separate article?......after the fashion of the Hae Dong Kumdo and Hankumdo sections in the Kumdo article? Thoughts? Best Wishes....--Bruce W Sims (talk) 13:49, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
