languages that I want to use

[edit]

I see too many languages at wiki. I want to restrict them to the following 6: German, Russian, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. How to eliminate the unwanted languages?

Norm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikalac (talkcontribs) 00:03, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia comes in different language editions and the community aims to include any and all languages as long as there are editors willing to build the editions in different languages. Please see Wikipedia:Multilingual coordination. Rosalina2427 (talk to me) 00:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Mikalac: I guess you refer to which languages are shown under "Languages" in the left pane. The bottom of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering has the option "Use a compact language list, with languages relevant to you." PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the correction PrimeHunter, I misunderstood that. Rosalina2427 (talk to me) 00:32, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hovering pop-ups

[edit]

How do I restore full pop-ups when hovering over links, today it only is giving me the link-label. 24.17.109.161 (talk) 05:54, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As an IP editor, you probably meant Page Previews than popups. Read Page Previews#Enable/Disable to understand how to get the same activated. By any chance if you mean how to enable popups (a facility provided to logged in users), you can read the instructions at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups#Automatic installation. Write back if something is unclear. Warmly, Lourdes 07:12, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Lourdes, I did mean previews and your information is just what I needed.

Help needed from someone who understands Korean

[edit]

At Talk:TrueCrypt#Druking a new editor is making claims that are

  • [A] extremely implausible from a technical standpoint, and
  • [B] according to Google Translate, do not appear appear to be contained in the sources he cited.

But we all know that Google Translate often misses important things, so I need someone who understands Korean to read the sources and post an opinion as to whether the claims are found in the sources. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:10, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Origins The Origin of the Telagas can be traced back to the Western Chalukyan Expansion into Andhra region which happened in the 6th century A.D. Telagas are the most ancient Warrior/Agricultural clans of the Deccan and South India who are specialised in warfare.

The term Telaga was a derivation of the word Telingana.Andhra was referred to as Telingana in the ancient texts as it was the area that had three major Shivinsa-Aramas, thus was called Tri-Linga', and the people living there were called Telugus and the language spoken by the people there was called Telugu.

The Telagas have served as Nayakulu (Governors),commanders and vassals of the Western Chalukya rulers under Pulakesin. These commanders were also called Telugu Nayakulu from which the community name might also might have been derived Telaga.

They formed the bulwark of Ancient armies of the Deccan and South India like Cholas,Pallavas,Chalukyas,Kakatiyas etc. They seem to have a connection with the Eastern Chalukyas.

The Vassals of Chalukyas entered into Matrimonial Alliances and ultimately established the Chalukya- Chola Dynasity. Etukuri Balaramamurthy and Colin McKenzie in fact mentione that these Telagas or Kapu communnity are the Descendants of these were these Telugu Cholas.

Telugu Cholas The Telugu Cholas rules for over Four Centuries the various regions of Andhra.

Important ruling Clans were

Velanati Choluluof Palnadu War who supported Bramha Naidu in his war against the Nalagam Raju.

Renati Cholas

Konidena Cholas

Nannuru Cholas

Nellore Chola Kings

After the fall of the Easten Chalukyan kingdoms and the Velanati Cholas. The Telagas had to serve under the Kakateeyas as Vassals and accept their Suzzienarity.Under the new rulers they were given the title Nayaka/Nayakudu and played a major role in shaping the history of modern Andhra.

After the fall of the Kakateeyas the Telagas under Kaapaya Nayaka and Prolaya Nayaka led the battle against the invading Bahamanis by combining forces with the Reddy,Velama and Balija Nayaks and liberated the Andhra Country from Tyrranny nd Destruction.

Telagas had matrimonial Alliances with the Kakateeya and Vijayanagar Rulers.Araveeti Rama Raya the son in law of Krishna Devaraya and the ruler of the last Dynasity of Viajayanagar was a Tealaga. This family was a Eastern Chalukyan Fuedataory called the Arayeti Family which became Araveeti in due cource of time.

With Vijayanagara coming into power the Telagas served under the new rulers and were Dispatched off to Protect the farflung regions of the empire to Tamil Nadu and were posted as Nayaks and took up Administration as Nayaks/Nayakers. The most famous Telaga General was Viswanatha Nayaka who started the Madurai Nayak Dynasit. -- Source Penugonda Charitra..

After the fall of the Vijayanagar Empire in the Battle of Talikota large sections of Telagas migrated towards the North and settled down in their Native Country the Godavari deltas and took to agriculture. And some of them went further South and settled down in the Tanjavur region and joined the Tanjavur Nayaks Army.

Telagas are known for their bravery and fearlessness aptly put by a famous Telrugu Saying describing the community "Teginche vade Telaga" which means "One who dares is a Telaga".Even now we can find swords, armours and weapons with some of the Telaga families in Rajamundry. All of these people are Vaishnavas and have Sri Venugopala Swami has their family deity.

Another Legendary Instance of Telaga Bravery was exhibited during the Bobbili War fought between the Velama Kingdom and the Vizianagaram kingdom led by Vijayaram raju. When all seemed lost for the Bobbilli Ranga Rayudu the Bobbili King before riding out to war in no mood to submit the honour and the Dignity of the Royal House Ordered all of his commanders to Execute their Families before riding out to meet their fate. Accordingly the Telaga and Velama Commanders and Soldiers Executed their families before proceeding out to war. Viajayaramaraju was laid to rest by a valiant Telaga Commander Miriyala Venkata Rao along with Papa Rayudu. -- Bobbili Charitra

Legend Pulakesin II’s brother, Kubja Vishnu Vardhana, founded the Eastern Chalukya Empire after he was appointed Viceroy of Vengi and gave many of his trusted generals fiefdoms to rule over as his vassals and took up reign as Telaga Nayakulu (Governors). Most of the Telagas are fuedal landlords concentrated mainly in the coastal areas of Andhra.

Automatic row numbering?

[edit]

Is there an existing template or otherwise that allows wikitable rows to be automatically numbered in wiki, such as to automate the process in articles like Cardinal electors for the papal conclave, 2013? This is to resolve the issue of manually attaching numbers to each row and then necessitating tedious changes if rows have to be removed or re-ordered. Thanks. Category:Table templates or Help:Tables contain nothing of the sort. I find it hard to believe it does not exist, though. TigraanClick here to contact me 10:10, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What is difference between Teahouse and Help desk?

[edit]

What is difference between Wikipedia:Teahouse and Wikipedia:Help_desk? Shushugah (talk) 15:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

They have an overlapping scope, but very generally, the Teahouse is geared somewhat more toward very new users specifically, while the help desk is a more general purpose forum, where you will more often see very experienced editors asking questions, and more questions of a highly technical nature than you will normally see at the Teahouse. GMGtalk 15:09, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What GMG said...apart from the fact that at a Teahouse, you normally get tea and chit chat away on getting to know the place; while at the Help desk, you get something akin to end user support... Lourdes 01:52, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help repairing text of the website.

[edit]

Hello, request help to repair text on this website. If you can click "English List" on the right side of the website, and then click - Authonomy 1920-36 and - Regions of KazSSR, you would see a website full of question marks. There are also a picture of the Emblem of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. The website provides a very precious and valuable information about the article, if the error can be repaired.--Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 15:09, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is the help desk for using and editing the English Wikipedia. It is not the right place for asking about repairs to other web sites. Do you have a question about using or editing here? -Arch dude (talk) 15:27, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: If the reparation is complete, it would've helped referencing about the article. So, what I am requesting is explicitly connected to Wikipedia.

It is about "editing the article."--Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 15:31, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Condensing multiple citations

[edit]

As I understand it, refs cannot be nested inside other refs, so what solutions are there for a situation where a statement has 5+ citations, and it is getting cluttered, but the citations are also named references, so they simply use something like <ref name='Recipe'/>. I am trying to address a real use case in Edward Snowden page where even trimming down citations, it's still hard to read when not merged.

So while this example below is possible, the one after produces an error.

Markup Renders as

Hey Shushugah. As far as I know, if you are using multiple references, you will have to repeat named refs with each bullet point. For example:

Johnny told the devil "you son of a gun, I'm the best there's ever been."<ref name="daniels">The Devil went down to Georgia. (1979) Charlie Daniels. ''Epic Records''.</ref> They engaged in a fiddle playing contest which Johnny won.<ref name="daniels"/> The story was later told in a popular song by Charlie Daniels.<ref>* The Devil went down to Georgia. (1979) Charlie Daniels. ''Epic Records''.
* Billboard top 100 songs about the Devil. 1989. ''Billboard''
* Interview with the Devil. 2004. ''The Rolling Stone''</ref>

Which would give you this"

Johnny told the devil "you son of a gun, I'm the best there's ever been."[1] They engaged in a fiddle playing contest which Johnny won.[1] The story was later told in a popular song by Charlie Daniels.[2]

References

  1. ^ a b The Devil went down to Georgia. (1979) Charlie Daniels. Epic Records.

    • Billboard top 100 songs about the Devil. 1989. Billboard

You can't use the named ref within a ref because AFAIK you can't nest ref tags within one another. GMGtalk 16:55, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@GreenMeansGo: I think I've fixed the formatting error now, btw. I don't think it was this section that caused the trouble - it was an unclosed ref tag on a post way above that I've now nowikied.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 17:05, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify - I'm talking about the formatting problem with the help desk, not the question Shushugah originally asked. :)--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 17:08, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Thanks a bunch. And that's why it worked in preview but not in the page...and why for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my markup...because there wasn't anything wrong. :P GMGtalk 17:09, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nested infobox templates

[edit]

I am trying to add the field birth_name to Uri Avnery's infobox. Currently it uses {{Infobox member of the Knesset}} which does not have that field. I have a few options.

1. Propose to edit to {{Infobox member of the Knesset}} to include the new field (I don't have template editing abilities) 2. Wrap the template inside another one. I tried this, but it has some styling issue, see enclosed markup and result below, with 'birth_name' being steve jobs.

JOE (R&B Singer)

[edit]

In JOE's bio on wikipedia, it states that he moved to New Jersey and became acquainted with Producer, Vincent Herbert which resulted in a record deal with Polygram Records. This patently false. Vincent Herbert had nothing to do with JOE getting a record deal with Polygram. JOE was managed by me (Tselane Williams) and my sister Michele Williams through our company Big Arm Management. I have the actual management agreement. I secured and negotiated his record deal with Mercury/Polygram. He was signed by Dave McPherson. After 2 years and the release of his critically acclaimed Gold debut album, I secured a release for JOE from his record deal with MErcury records and found a new deal for him with Jive Records. That deal resulted in a new album and the release of several chart topping hits including "Don't Want To Be a Player" (co-written by Michele Williams), "I Wanna Know" and "Stutter." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ninelivesent (talkcontribs) 18:05, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This forum is not for content dispute, rather technical questions of HOW to use wikipedia. That said, I see the claim on that page his no citation. Do you have citation? Original research, like contract sheets do not qualify since that is WP:OR. Imho, that section should be removed entirely, since it's unsubstantiated. Shushugah (talk) 18:14, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Ninelivesent Are you aware of published sources that better describe the chain of events? I see the section of Joe (singer) that describes his early career is insufficiently referenced, and that goes against best practices in Wikipedia. Since this is a biography of a living person it's important to us that we get things right, and part of that is ensuring that controversial information is properly referenced. I have added a citation needed tag to the sentence in question. If you can point me at sources to verify your claim I'll gladly change it, but we cannot simply take your word for it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:16, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • @WBTPR1:when reading WP:Your first article, please note (really, I mean pay careful attention to this) that the first step is fundamental: If your subject is not notable, by our definition, not yours, then it should not have an article on Wikipedia, no matter how well-written the article is. If you somehow manage to force an article on a non-notable subject onto Wikipedia, it will be deleted. If your subject is notable, then in theory even a poorly written article will be retained so that it can be improved later, but of course we really prefer to start with a well-written article. -Arch dude (talk) 18:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
