  • Orphan; also it's origin is questioned as possibly being original research. Fléêťflämẽ U-T-C 00:39, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Not quite orphan but just waiting for the discussion to end. Yes, there are only a few sources in the internet, but this does not necessitate ignoring the published work as presented in the talk page of the article. You should disprove the sources given in the talk page firstly. E104421 (talk) 13:31, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"No pages on the English Wikipedia link to this file." How is that "not quite an orphan"? Yes, I am aware of the discussion on the Gokturks page, but right now it doesn't look like they'll keep it. Fléêťflämẽ U-T-C 18:29, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So what's the rush? A definitive end to the discussion is the proper juncture to go to IFD.--chaser (away) - talk 10:00, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This image is being presented in Wikipedia as a historical fact reliably sourced. It is not. A source is provided but is shown to be unreliable after doing a little digging. Apparently this came from the Flags of the World website, which got it from the President of Turkey's website. Unfortunately, both of these websites do not list historical sources for the flag design. These flags are by all appearances "made up" and not historically accurate. The FOTW website even reads, "To the best of our knowledge, the historical existence of most of these flags is not proven and we are not aware of their origin and designer. Any information on these questions would be greatly appreciated." and further calls it an alleged flag. The only reason to keep this flag here would be in some article regarding the use of Gokturks in fantasy and fiction. E104421 suggests the sources should be disproven first. I challenge E104421 to prove a source instead. The sources E104421 is using to "prove" the image is akin to using a fan fiction website to "prove" canonicity of a Star Trek story. Moreover, this image was previously submitted for deletion and should have been deleted as there were two votes for delete and one for keep. [1] --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 17:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keep The image of the wolf head on the flags of Turkic people, under whatever name they were known at the time, is well attested in the Chinese, Persian, and Moslem annals. The image may well be a reconstructed image, akin for example to reconstructed Ptolemy maps, but that would not diminish its graphical illustrative purpose for general audience of WP as much as a deletion from the public view for the benefit of the readers, as much so as the deletion of Ptolemy maps on technicalities would not benefit the WP readers. A simple disclamer that this is possibly a reconstructed image is all that is needed, especially if a reader would be mislead by the idea that the same image on the flag survived a millennia years in time, and dozens of political entities that chose to use the wolf head on their flags. Repeated attempts to remove a graphical illustration to the antique annals do not certify the validity of the reasons for removal from the WP public view. Barefact (talk) 15:43, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment I still disagree. The flag is based upon a creation by the Office of the President of Turkey with absolutely no regard for any of the historical annals that a wolf's head banner is attested in (other than the idea of a wolf's head). A better solution would be to delete this image and replace it with a graphic illustration which is actually based upon attested sources. Example, Gokturks are known to have used a GOLDEN wolf's head. Why does this flag use a green one? No one knows! --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 19:51, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: Barefact, when you say "well attested in the Chinese, Persian, and Moslem annals", aren't you overstating your case a bit? From the discussion on the image description page, it appears we have exactly one secondary source that describes how the name of the Göktürks was symbolically associated with wolves, and exactly one second-hand reference in that work to exactly one work by another author who seems to have claimed somewhere there were also wolf flags used. Nobody has yet found out what that information is ultimately based on. Fut.Perf. 07:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Keep Seems that we are on the same page, the problem is "being presented in Wikipedia as a historical fact reliably sourced. It is not.", and it can be easily cured by a proper disclamer that it is a reconstrucion based on Chinese, Persian, and Arabic annals. WP is full of these type of reconstructions, some of them really fake and funny, just look at posted illustrations by Vasnetsov, for example, and the present illustration does serve its purpose of giving a visual reconstruction of a well established facts. Stacey's idea of making another reconstruction using golden color is a good idea, maybe that reconstruction would serve the same purpose better, and benefit all of us. Barefact (talk) 17:13, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong delete. No reliable sourcing. The information that there was some usage of some symbol with some wolf shape on it is sourced, this design most clearly is not. There is no indication whatsoever that the use of this design by modern Turkish agencies is based on any amount of serious archaeological research rather than modern imagination. It's also inherently implausible on stylistic grounds: just compare the design of that alleged flag with the style of attested artistic representations made by the Göktürks themselves. It is plain obvious that this is not an authentic mid-first-millenium AD design. Declaring it a "reconstruction" won't help, as long as we don't know on the basis of what information it has been "reconstructed". For all we know, the "something like a wolf" is most probably the only such bit of information there ever was, and making a pictorial reconstruction on the basis of that is plain ridiculous and lacks any information value whatsoever. Fut.Perf. 07:00, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • On further thought: There is also an obvious copyvio problem with this image. It's tagged as pd-self, but that's evidently false since it's an exact copy of a previously existing design found on the Flags of the World site. Pd-old is also obviously not an option if it's a modern "reconstruction" (or whatever) rather than an authentic old design. This image is of unknown copyright status and most likely non-free. Fut.Perf. 21:08, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment The image is not copyrighted. Atilim created the image with different size and resolution. Furthermore, the FOTW site reconstructed the image from the Presidental insignia of the Republic of Turkey. The FOTW site disclamier is as follows "The 16 Great Turkish Empires are listed on several Turkish sources, such as the websites of the Research Centre for Turkestan and Azerbaijan and the Australian-Turkish Media Group. All sources give an identical presentation of the Empires, which probably comes from some official document. In the following paragraphs, this description is given as the "official description"." If we put a notification to the image caption as "The flag attributed to the Göktürk Empire as depicted in the Presidental insignia of the Republic of Turkey ... ", i do not think that this will lead any confusion. The flag is informative, it gives readers an impression on what the Gokturk flag may look like. It can be also used in the "Turkic mythology" section of the Turkic peoples article, and also in the "Ashina" article. All these were stated in the previous deletion nomination and also in the talk page of the article. Regards. E104421 (talk) 15:23, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Sorry, but you are wrong on several counts. First, Atilim's recreation did not create new copyright conditions, it's still a derivative work and as such under the same conditions as its model. Second, it's not part of the Presidential insignia; it's just used on a website explaining the presidential insignia. Third, the fact that it is used in identical form across a number of websites does not mean it's free. The FOTW site itself explicitly does not claim its contents are free. This is a modern creation made by some unknown author whose work has been copied without authorship attribution across the web. We currently have no idea what its status is. Hands off. Fut.Perf. 16:03, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • I think you missed the Presidental insignia page. The FOTW site also cited the Presidency of Republic of Turkey for the flag. There are other web pages explaining the insignia, for example this one. On the other hand, if you check the disclamiers and copyrights of the FOTW site, you'll see that Atilim's upload does not violate any copyright. Regards. E104421 (talk) 18:07, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • The official "insignia" itself, as shown on the presidency homepage, is only the circle with the sun in the middle and the stars around it. The flags surrounding it are only an illustrative addition made on that page. And the FOTW site says "If the contributor says what is the origin of the information we report it, otherwise we assume it is new material and the copyright is owned by the contributor", which actually quite clearly means it's non-free. Fut.Perf. 18:18, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • The flag is reportedly appeared in the stamp series of Turkic states (2nd. series) in 1985 by PTT of the Republic of Turkey (the link is here). The FTOW page, on the other hand, is dated July 4, 2004. So, as they already mentioned about the flags as The 16 Great Turkish Empires are listed on several Turkish sources, such as the websites of the Research Centre for Turkestan and Azerbaijan and the Australian-Turkish Media Group. All sources give an identical presentation of the Empires, which probably comes from some official document. In the following paragraphs, this description is given as the "official description". ... It's quite clear that they reproduce it from the insignia. Hence, no copyvio. In addition, it's written in the disclamier that "You can freely use any material copyrighted by the contributors of the website, 1. provided that you use the material for non-commercial and non-political purposes only, 2. you quote the author". Atilim quoted the author in the image page as "Image of the alleged flag of Göktürk Empire, blue with a wolf's head, created by me based on the version on Flags of the World website.[1] Ultimately based on the image by Ivan Sache, 4 July 2004." The conditions listed in the disclamiers and copyrights page of FOTW is also satisfied. So, no problem. Regards. E104421 (talk) 20:37, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
            • Sorry, but I can't keep explaining this to you over and over again. It's a reproduction of a modern design of an ultimately unknown source, hence of unknown copyright status, hence unuseable. Discussion is over. The closing admin will have enough to go on. Fut.Perf. 20:59, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
              • Of course, if he/she compares the date of the FTOW page (2004) with the published stamp date (1985), he/she probably realize that the FTOW flag is a later fabrication. Even if the dates are ignored, it's clear from the disclamier of the FTOW that the flag can be used freely as i already quoted directly above. Regards. E104421 (talk) 21:09, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think arguing here further with E104421 is a waste of time. Someone get me the proper reference for the golden wolf's head banner of the Gokturks, I'll try to draw something up, then we can delete this flag as an orphan image. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 02:54, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note: As nobody seemed to be passing by to close this, I've gone ahead and speedied as a copyright violation. Fut.Perf. 13:45, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Admins are generally expected not to use their admin rights in the disputes they are involved, aren't they? E104421 (talk) 19:15, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The copyright finding is independent of the content dispute about the encyclopedic value of the image, and thus orthogonal to the issue of this IfD. It's a matter of speedy deletion, and as such not dependent on procedural criteria of XfD closing. HTH. Fut.Perf. 19:53, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A screenshot of a scene from the film where characters are together contributes much encyclopedically ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:08, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The screenshots on Commons are not just characters with names, I just uploaded a lot more- see commons:Category:Mutiny on the Bounty (1935 film). Gustav von Humpelschmumpel (talk) 19:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The image is rationaled to "identify[...] the subject of the article, which is the film or film character itself" for the article Mutiny on the Bounty (1935 film), however there is already copyright material in that article performing that purpose: Image:35A.gif. The image warrants no apparent mention of relevance in the article itself—even lacking so much as a caption. Further, if character depiction is desired, libre media is available for that purposing as mentioned by User:Gustav von Humpelschmumpel.

For the unformatted article American films of 1935, the image is rationaled thusly: (a) "For an article covering the films released in the USA in 1935, one single screenshot identifying the Academy Award winning film of that year in the absence of any other images significantly contribrutes to the article and illustrates the role and significance of that film in cinemtatic history." Regardless of the number of copyrighted images used, no illustration is needed to enhance readers' understanding that "Mutiny on the Bounty won Best Picture at the Academy Awards", which is the entirety of that image's purpose on said page. (b) "No free or public domain images have been located for this film or indeed any films of that year." is patently false, as brought up by User:Gustav von Humpelschmumpel in the nomination.

    Lastly, the image lacks attribution to its copyright holder, as required by WP:NFCC#10a. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 15:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
