Purpose

[edit]

The purpose of this collaboration project is to create a more hospitable editing environment when disputes arise on articles due to political differences. Including through a) actively seeking the cooperation of people who hold differing points of views as specified under membership and b) preventing and resolving politically motivated disputes, using both formal and informal methods, such as mediation, third opinions, etcetera. We provide various tools below to facilitate the project.

Dealing with disputes

[edit]

This group is intended to be an extra, optional dispute resolution step for articles that are being contested by two politically different groups, as well as a source of neutral editors who can give second and third opinions about topics affected by political division. The topic need not be inherently political to fall within the scope of this project.

  • Content disputes at specific articles, or similar problems with political spectrum issues, typically deserve a thorough discussion on an article's talk page and are best resolved in consensus among all participants. Despite strong emotions, there are several ways to get your point across while making it easy for people to stay cool. See Staying cool when the editing gets hot.
  • Highly informal mediation and extra, neutral, opinions may be enough to resolve simple problems.
  • If this does not resolve the issue, see the list of various remedies at WP:Dispute Resolution. This project aims to supplement these procedures when political issues are involved with the dispute.
  • One of the Dispute Resolution remedies is to refer issues to noticeboards and there are a number on issues like reliable sources, point of views, biographies, etc. See See Noticeboard list.

Members

[edit]

The group welcomes editors with differing points of view. Members should support the project's goals and be willing to engage in non-combative conversation. Otherwise, there are no specific criteria for membership at this time.

Members are encouraged, but not required, follow dispute-reducing principles or practices, such as 1:RR. If a member decides to pledge such a principle or practice, he or she can list it and other pledges.

Members of this project should state their political opinions if asked, as well as leaving a general description here. Keep in mind that having a position doesn't equate to bad editing. Revealing opinions allows everyone to see what kind of divide is forming and find ways to bridge the gap.
