Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Decrease

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

  • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
  • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
  • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
  • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Pending protection was imposed literally 8 years ago by acalamari. It seemed to be applicable until February 2023 when disruptive edits arose. The incident resulted in a week-long protection, followed by a 3-month long protection, followed by a 3-day long protection before being resorted to a year long protection. Well, the year long protection recently expired, only to allow the same disruption. Wouldn't that have already defeated the purpose of PC? Why in the world do we have to wait for another year before the decision to reset pending changes is approved?197.2.212.136 (talk) 16:01, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, Bot! You need a larger language model. Favonian (talk) 17:06, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This doesn't make much sense, but I think you mean that pending changes settings should be removed because the page is also extended confirmed protected. I agree BombCraft8 (talk) 20:59, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The usual reason we leave PC in place underneath semi and EC is as fallback for editors to cope with disruption after a protection expires ... often admins don't have W-Ping and forget that protections they set have expired. The only reason I would remove it under ECP is if the protection were to be made indefinite, eliminating that issue.

I also think that we are overdue for bringing back PC2, which now would be applied to auto-confirmed editors as well (and perhaps automatically semi-protecting the page in the process), which would also solve this problem. Daniel Case (talk) 21:15, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – No changes to the current protection level are required at this point in time. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 22:01, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Protection no longer needed over a decade. 49.150.14.10 (talk) 22:56, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – No changes to the current protection level are required at this point in time. Unfortunately, these "zoo animal" articles need to be protected due to continual vandalism and previous unprotection attempts on similar articles have failed. All of these are semi-protected: alligator, giraffe, lion, tiger, elephant, zebra, bear, shark, wolf, leopard, cheetah, and many more. You might consider registering an account so you can edit articles like this in the future. If you don't want to register an account, you can also make an edit request on the article talk page.
