Docplayer

[edit]

Wikipedia has many links to a website named Docplayer (most under .net but also other top level domains), but no article about this website. Who owns and operates it? It appears to be full of other people's documents, uploaded at random and anonymously. How is that not a copyright problem? The website appears high among hits in Google searches. Perhaps Google owns the site? The Internet Archive has copies of the docplayer.net front page since September 2015. --LA2 (talk) 01:12, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did you do a domain whois? 67.165.185.178 (talk) 02:14, 8 September 2021 (UTC).[reply]
It does not reveal more than that the registrar is REG.RU, one of Russia's largest domain registrars. The website is hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH, based in Gunzenhausen, Germany. The website itself is conspicuously mum about its "About".  --Lambiam 08:20, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Their Terms of Service state: "These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia without regard to its principles of conflict of laws."  --Lambiam 08:29, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Some research into this question was made some years back by a journalist in Europe for RTL. He found a name of a Russian, but did not reach that individual. It could be a front person for a larger organization. Nobody seems to know. But should Wikipedia have over 300 links to such a shadowy website, thereby lending it credibility? I suggest the links be removed. Each of the documents should be possible to find at other (orgininal) websites, from where they were pirated. --LA2 (talk) 18:33, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If not PD, they may have been uploaded by the original authors or copyright holders. Note that YouTube also contains quite a few videos of dubious legal status, but that should not taint all videos.  --Lambiam 11:30, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
However, the investigations by Sijmen Ruwhof strongly suggest that the files are uploaded by a web crawler and not by their authors.  --Lambiam 11:52, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to do a specific voice effect on Audacity

[edit]

On Audacity, I am trying to achieve a heavily distorted vocal effect similar to the recordings of this character here or of this character here. Would anyone be willing to help me on this?

I should probably note that I don't use the latest version of Audacity. I believe the version I got is 2.1.0, around the last to use the old profile before they overhauled the programme's layout to a "smoother modern" look that was chock full of bugs. --72.234.12.37 (talk) 04:51, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
