New template for {{SP400 companies}}[edit]

{{SP400 companies}}

Would be similar to

{{AEX companies}}

But with companies in the S&P 400.

Do you just want the above copied to a template? Also, what do the asterisks signify? LittlePuppers (talk) 22:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the idea. Create a new template that can be added to page footers.
Oops, asterisks are suppose to be bullet point/spacers. Think I need a space after each one? I'll fix that later. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
You need to put each item on a new line, i.e. so each asterisk starts a line (I did one as an example). LittlePuppers (talk) 00:53, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, all ready. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
One other thing - do you think you could take a look at my other question on the Talk page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talkcontribs)
See Help:Template limits if you want highly technical details, but I don't think this will be an issue - the problem is rarely number of links, but if the template is doing complex computations, which this is not. (And I am still planning on getting to this request at some point.) LittlePuppers (talk) 21:12, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are size considerations, but I'll set this template to be collapsed by default. LittlePuppers (talk) 21:13, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the info. Yeah, this is just static text (if I'm understanding the page history correctly, it's 8k of text, perhaps 16k of html) so probably not too bad. I'm just mindful of the fact it's almost the whole screen on my phone. Also looking at where the limit might be for future ideas. Clearly the Wilshire 5000 index is gonna be way too large for this to be practical... Would be nice to tie it in with some sort of etiquette or other limit (ie category pages list up to 200 articles on each page, you have to navigate through them). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.223.250 (talk) 23:01, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And if I'm remembering correctly, navboxes like this generally don't show up at all in articles on mobile. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:40, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the red links, I assume it's better simply to remove the link tag but leave the text in place, rather than actually shorten the list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 18:21, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think in this case the red links might be alright; it might be borderline, but I don't think they're quite excessive, see WP:RED. There are also a handful of links to disambiguation pages, which I'm working on right now. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:27, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comparing with List of S&P 400 companies has also shown a few which do have articles. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:50, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How does {{S&P 400 companies}} look? LittlePuppers (talk) 23:57, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great. Thank you very much! Just one thing - Consumer Discretionary seems bigger than all the rest. Something to do with the additional text? Otherwise it does the job perfectly. Now we just need to start adding it... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 11:49, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about it looks bigger - the text "Consumer Discretionary"? That looks similar to all the rest to me. Can you describe what specifically looks off, or post a screenshot? LittlePuppers (talk) 22:33, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The left column in fine, but every link in the right column looks approx 200% size. Using Chrome on Android/Motorola, I've tried mobile view, desktop view, spoofing as desktop, the same every time. Can't see any markup issues. Pretty sure it's something to do with the Under Armour nonlinked text... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 13:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I just added the template to Cable One, and now, when on that page, the whole of the Communication section is large... could be a CSS issue? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 14:14, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried both the desktop and mobile site on a few different browsers and it looks normal to me in all of them (although navboxes generally don't display in articles on the mobile site). You could try asking at WP:VPT and seeing if anyone there can reproduce the issue. LittlePuppers (talk) 17:36, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you're right. I've just checked Chrome on Windows and Safari on Mac. No issues. Must be an Android thing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 23:15, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Included the category, plus getting there with the additions. Does anybody else wanna take Financials, Industrials or Consumer Discretionary? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 22:53, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template that takes in text with spaces and outputs text with underscores[edit]

For use on the attribution template {{AARoads}}. {{Flinkr}} does this, but it also wikilinks the output. Mach61 (talk) 14:13, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you use module:string's replace function? VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 15:11, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mach61: Hi. {{replace|Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet| |_}} would give "Lorem_ipsum_dolor_sit_amet". If it's not enough, we can wrap this template in a new one which just replaces spaces with underscores by default. Jeeputer Talk 18:31, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Invitation template - WP: Orphanage[edit]

Cheers, please create an invitation template, for WP:Orphanage. Even though I have little confidence in making this kind of template myself, per instructions, I completed a portion of the content below.

1. Add request at bottom of page

2. For WikiProject Orphanage

3. Please be clear about:

  • What the template is used for:
    • Invite to WikiProject Orphanage
  • Roughly what it should look like:
    • clone of Template:WikiProject Journalism invitation
    • Use instead of Newspaper, adjust px size

4. Invitation text (Template) - first attempt here

Greetings Requested templates,
We would like to invite you to join WikiProject Orphanage, a group of Wikipedians helping improve articles on many topics. "An orphan article has no links from other pages in the main article namespace". If you are new to Wikipedia, de-orphaning articles is a great way to learn a wide variety of useful skills. De-orphaning, when done correctly, will allow you to learn how to navigate within Wikipedia, how to format wikilinks, and how to utilize cleanup tags.
If you're interested, consider adding yourself to the list of participants. For the how-to page, see WP:ORPH. Thank you!

Chances are there might be mistakes in the above, so feel free to adjust where needed. Thanks for helping. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 21:22, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JoeNMLC: how does Template:WikiProject Orphanage invitation look? LittlePuppers (talk) 07:21, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Done - @LittlePuppers Thank you for creating this. I tested (without saving) on my Talk page and it looks to be okay. Next, I will introduce on WP Orphanage talk page before deployment. Cheers! JoeNMLC (talk) 14:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template for excessive details[edit]

FTSE Small companies[edit]

{{FTSE Small companies}}

As per request above, would be similar to

{{AEX companies}}

But with companies in the FTSE SmallCap Index.

Hmm, I feel like it would be good to have some better way of specifying that this is only the companies in the index with Wikipedia articles - otherwise "none" makes it sound like the index has no companies in that category. LittlePuppers (talk) 22:35, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think redlinks can be used to include potentially notable companies in those fields. — Frostly (talk) 03:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Probably, and that's what was done a few sections up (S&P 400). That said, the one above has articles for just under 90% of the companies, while this looks like it would be closer to 30%. LittlePuppers (talk) 04:27, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I'm not sure there are any companies in the index that represent the telecoms sector - the section was included in case some are added in the future, but maybe it's best simply to remove it.
Secondly, I guess if this was actually a page with a list of the companies, we should think about including them all (better for them not to be linked). However, as this is a navbox, I don't see that it makes much sense to include companies or links if the pages don't exist. Further, there is no claim that navboxes are complete - however we are likely to find that once it is created, people start adding the remaining links, and even creating articles to fill in the gaps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 20:44, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Come to think of it, the FTSE Fledgling Index doesn't have any telecoms companies either... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 17:46, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I wouldn't sorry about it being "30%". Once it's created it can easily be added to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.214.198 (talk) 22:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please note updated source above to include more companies.

Templates trying to load Non existent portals[edit]

Please see Category:Portal templates with redlinked portals. There are large number of these resulting from YYYY type templates which are trying to load Portals which have been deleted - typically decades and countries I believe. I think an ifexists instruction within the template will resolve these. Template editing is beyond me so can anyone assist? Lyndaship (talk) 14:17, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to User:Jonesey95 it's all resolved Lyndaship (talk) 16:39, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Campaignbox Dano-German Conflicts[edit]

AfC Reviwer here. Draft:Template: Campaignbox Dano-German Conflicts may please be seen for necessary action with further notifications to the submitter at @Tinkaer1991:.

Template: Campaignbox Dano-German Conflicts was created by the draft editor, nothing more to do here. Also noting for the record there is nothing wrong with templates in the Draft space. Primefac (talk) 08:29, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A Falcon launches clone of Template:TLS-L and Template:TLS-M[edit]

SpaceX increasing launch cadence has changed the look of List of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches. So I need a clone of Template:TLS-M where I can point the month to first launch of the month or none if no launches in that month or to future launches if the launch is pending and is currently in future launches section. I need a clone of Template:TLS-L to list all the Falcon launches as [[F9-300|300]] that have id like "F9-300" so that users can navigate to a particular launch. All is for user viewership of this article. Thanks in advance......—🪦VSVNB1058 (2020-2023) (TALK) 03:27, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mind it this List of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches is a wikitable article, not a TLS navigational box so a problem. —🪦VSVNB1058 (2020-2023) (TALK) 03:29, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that this is needed. Firstly nothing has "changed about the look of List of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches". The page is just as it's always been. Secondly TLS-M was not intended for the what you want it to use it for. It would make the current page even more busy than it currently is. Thirdly, it is already possible to link directly to missions on the page. Like so: List of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches#F9-300 Ergzay (talk) 11:57, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am asking this List of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches#F9-300 for readers and non editors. they can neither link nor have a dialog box like contents sidebar. —🪦VSVNB1058 (2020-2023) (TALK) 12:04, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "dialog box like contents sidebar"? Ergzay (talk) 13:24, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The three dots on left of page title at the top in destop view if its hidden by you or automatically hidden is contents sidebar. It's a guide to readers to navigate to sections, same will occur if we create a clone of TLS-L—🪦VSVNB1058 (2020-2023) (TALK) 13:33, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I'm still not understanding you. The table of contents is part of the article so it's not a sidebar, and the Falcon 9 list page has a table of contents in the article. So there's nothing readers are missing. Ergzay (talk) 14:16, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I want a similar tool to help readers navigate to a particular launch id say 264, like they navigate to sections using table of contents. Clone of TLS-L will help —🪦VSVNB1058 (TALK) 15:23, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think you'll get pushback trying to include a table of every single launch like that in the wikipage. Ergzay (talk) 20:48, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh then it will be bad —🪦NΛSΛ B1058 (TALK) 12:09, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
