This course introduces students to key topics in African politics and development. We take a chronological tour of broad political and developmental themes from the pre-colonial era, colonial era, post-colonial era, and “3rd wave” transitions to democracy (for some countries). This tour (about 2/3rds of class) enables students to understand the political and socioeconomic legacies these eras have left for politics and socioeconomic development in recent years. We will delve into selected topics from contemporary times based on class interest (last 1/3 of course). There are many knowledge gaps related to African Politics on Wikipedia, and students will seek to improve upon existing gaps.
