Bonjour Jgm18, I don't know whether you've had a chance to translate any of the West Coast articles yet. But if I may make a suggestion:

translate Paparoa Track
produce French captions for this video (I'd be happy to help as I've worked out how to do that; you could do the translation and I can produce the file with timed text)
Nominate this at Le saviez-vous ? (which is the equivalent of our Did you know? or DYK)

Paparoa Track (1:30 min)

Did you know ... that the hiking track through the Pororari River Gorge has become part of New Zealand's newest Great Walk, the Paparoa Track (video shown)?

Can I suggest a double-DYK? I've already expanded the river article and all we'd have to do, over the next four or so days, is to also expand the Paparoa Track article. Prose size is currently 600 B so it's an easy undertaking. Schwede 66 05:48, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Right, that's under control. Marshal and I have nicely expanded the Paparoa Track article. It's looking quite good. I reckon that Pike29 could have its own article.

But coming back to DYK, I would like to suggest that as far as impact goes, front page exposure cannot be beaten. To that end, can I encourage you to nominate articles that are eligible? Anything that is new and not a stub would make it, and expanded articles qualify once they are 5x as long. Articles that I've seen that would be great to have are Inland Pack Track (Marshelec, but needs to be nominated pronto as it's now seven days old), Copland Track (Turnagra), Mount Te Kinga (Turnagra), Croesus Track (Marshelec). Can I give you a hand with the nomination process? Expansions are harder to spot; has anyone done one? Giantflightlessbirds, have you created significant content in the last seven days? Happy to give a couple of DYK submissions a shot for my one - I'm thinking something about the Welcome Flat hut having to be moved almost as soon as it was built for the Copland Track article, but would also be open to ideas if anyone thinks there's another one that'd be better? Duplicate wikidata entries[edit]

I've noticed that a couple of the places in focus so far (Eastern Hohonu River and Arnold River) have double up entries on wikidata. While this would normally be fine and easy enough to merge, it seems that they also have duplicate articles on the Cebuano wikipedia, both of which seem to be bot-generated. Since I don't speak Cebuano and can't really engage over there, nor can we leave the article without a wikidata link, do we have a general approach on how we should resolve this? What I do is merge multiple river Wikidata items into one, break the Cebuano link, set coordinates etc properly, and hope that sorts it. I think we need to have a conversation about what to do about Cebuano Wikipedia-created Wikidata items; personally I think it's perfectly fine to leave the bogus articles without a Wikidata item. Sverker Johansson wrote the bot that created all those useless articles with incorrect coordinates; by 2018 bot creation was banned in ceb Wikipedia, and the ones he created in Swedish Wikipedia are being deleted at the rate of about 5000 a day. This will presumably happen in Cebuano too. I presume they've stopped the automatic creation of Wikidata items for bot-created Cebuano articles—I don't think the ones I merged a couple of years ago have popped back into existence. I did wonder whether it was just better to break the link, especially one like those where everything is on the one wikidata except for the Cebuano article with coordinate-disambiguation. Waitakere or Nile River[edit]

I'm keen to give this article a crack if no-one else is doing it already, but I just wanted to confirm what name we should go with. Do I keep it with the 'or' or treat it as a dual name and use a spaced slash instead per the naming conventions? I was also going to ask about a macron given most uses of Waitākere up north have the macron over the 2nd a (eg. Waitākere Ranges) but it seems that even Ngāi Tahu's atlas doesn't use one, so we probably shouldn't in this case either. Turnagra (talk) 19:32, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We probably shouldn't then, even thought it might well get one when it goes through the official naming process. We don't need to use the awkward "Waitakere or Nile River" because it's not an official name, and it probably breaks Wikipedia guidelines. Since the river doesn't yet have an official dual name, bestowing something that looks like one on it would be inappropriate. So I think we should go with "Nile River (New Zealand)" for disambiguation purposes, and call it the "Nile or Waitakere River" in the lead. Happy to go with the consensus but I'd prefer to avoid unnecessary disambiguation if we can, especially since dual names have been used as a natural form of disambig on a fair few other articles and there are plenty of places which only have the unofficial name recorded and are at the dual title. In my view, since we need to disambiguate, I would prefer the use of a dual name. That way, we aren't giving preference to one of the names. A spaced slash is appropriate for dual names. I always prefer dual names over "(New Zealand)" disambiguation. Schwede 66 03:32, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you do end up on a tour, could you try and get some photos of Ōkāritoiti / Lake Windermere (assuming the tour goes near there)? I'm happy to try and whip up an article for that lake, but it'd be good to get some images if possible. There's no road or walking track to the lake; I could kayak 7 km from Ōkārito, but I can't go for a wander in the nature reserve without a permit unfortunately! That's all good, I wasn't sure where the tours went so it was just if you happened to be in the area! If you do manage to find someone with a picture that would be great, but no obligation of course - I'd try and find something too, but I've struggled a bit trying to get photos from elsewhere recently when trying to get some of the more remote fiords further south.
