Problem in using "locator maps" by Opera

[edit]

Hello everyone, I am trying to bring forward a problem which I have faced since day 1 in wiki. I use opera for browsing and always the locator maps mysfunctions and as a result the red orb always sticks to to the top of the frame (be it mumbai/chennai or Kolkata), recently I checked with IE and the problem did not occur, so I am sure the problem is because of the browser. Can anyone solve this problem. LegalEagle 15:47, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I use Opera too (9.02), but I don't face the problem. Don't think it is a browser problem. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:00, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I use opera 9.0, so what do you think the probable cause can be? LegalEagle 07:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure. Try upgrading and see if it is resolved? =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:13, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Could someone find out why Image:India annual rainfall map en.svg is not displaying for me properly in article space? At Climate of India, this is what I'm seeing. How can this be fixed? Thanks. Saravask 13:39, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GIFS

[edit]

This week two animated maps were promoted to featured status (See: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2007-03-20/Features and admins). Since we do have svg base maps of India, would anyone like to bell the cat in creating animated maps? I don't think it should be too difficult. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:26, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its not difficult to make the animations, we just need the data. Or if anyone can make the frames, i can package it into a gif -- PlaneMad|YakYak 16:12, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Map request

[edit]

Hi. I need two maps drawn for two Empires. I have scanned the maps from my source books (John Keay - History of India and Goerge Moraes - Kadamba Kula, A history of ancient and medieval Karnataka). I can email these .jpf files to anyone who is willing to draw them. I can also provide full information of the source where the map came from.thanksDineshkannambadi 15:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

State Locator Maps

[edit]

Has the state locater map for Karnataka been created yet? The status on the project's page tells me that all state location maps are complete. However, I'm not able to find the map(image) neither in Wikipedia or in Commons. --Natrajdr 04:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some conventions for Indian Empire Maps

[edit]
Using India locator map
By Planemad

Some maps like kadamba are not drawn on top India locator map and also do not have capitals. Some maps like Hoyasala map have red color instead of orange color shade. Can not we follow some uniform standard for all these empire maps? Political history of medieval Karnataka and many related empires articles use these maps. mlpkr 14:43, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Capitals are a new feature. Nobody really thought of them till recently. We are using this color for red: #B00000. The orange look might be because of transparency. Shall we set the transparency to 60%? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:29, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mlpkr, i noticed that you've raised the issue of standardising history maps. When User Dineshknambadi first requested me to make the rashtrakuta map, i looked at previously made historical maps to see if there was any format to follow. I found that the maps using the India locator map laid emphasis on features that were irrelevent for depicting historical maps, which is why i tried to make a new template map to use for historical perposes, keeping the following in mind:

  1. Borders of modern India and states do not need emphasis as it did not exist in those times.
  2. Most kingdoms and cities were limited by rivers, so showing major rivers was a must.
  3. Most of the available history maps from foreign sources used conical projection and not mercator projection. So it is more suitable and convenient for the map to use conical projection.
  4. India locator map lays too much emphasis on the disputed regions. This is irrelevant for historicalmaps and will clash if you needed to mark an area lying in Kashmir or Arunachal. Hence a single base color for the entire map.

The colors i used however were arbitrary. I'd like to know what others think?-- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment A map with state boundaries gives better perspective from the present day point of view, a map with rivers gives better historical perspective. This inconsistancy was noticed in a recent FAC. A map with rivers tends to add some clutter to the map though. A capital with a dot or a star is a must but a decision has to be made which one. It only makes for more clutter to add names of other historically important locations (other than the capital) in the map. For example, the Badami Chalukyas ruled from Badami, but near by Aihole and Pattadakal were also important. The Rashtrakutas ruled from Manyakheta, but they built their finest monuments in Ellora. I suggest we stick to only the regal capital. Dineshkannambadi 23:20, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While making history maps, we usually use source scans from books as the info is rarely available online. Due to this i feel we should duplicate the source maps using all available info so that data isnt lost, as maps over here are free versions of difficult to find maps. Theres no point in marking only the capital if we are using a map with much more info. Maybe we can have two versions of all maps, one with all the works and another to serve as a locator map with just the extent and a locator dot-- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:38, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about a overlay of the style used by Planemad and Mlpkr, this way we get the political present day state boundaries and the historical/rivers perspective limiting ourselves to only the major rivers etc. Then we can use a star for the capital, a dot for a limited the number of other important cities within the Empire/kingdom? We have to be careful in interpriting maps from history books. Very often (more often than not) the author overlays maps of multiple kingdoms from different time periods in history indicating important cities from different eras into one map. All this could simply be clutter providing the reader with opportunity for confusion.Dineshkannambadi 15:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TinucherianBot can automatically tag articles with {{WP India}} Banner as {{WP India|class=|importance=}} to the talk page of articles without the project banner. It can also add the workgroup paramaters like "|kerala=yes|kerala-importance=" etc ,if needed. The currently supported workgroups are Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bengal, Goa, Himachal Pradesh , Karnataka , Punjab, cities, Cinema, Literature, Protected Areas of India, History, Politics, states, Geography,Maps,Districts and Tamil.

If you need so, you need to provide me with the Categories to run the Bot. Due to some technical issues, the Bot will not run recursively to sub-categories. The requester should kindly verify that there are NO non-related articles in the category.
You may request for the bot run on my talk page... Thanks -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 06:41, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help Needed for Locator Map of Gujarat on gu.wiki

[edit]

I am one of the Admins on Gujarati Wiki which is a developing project. I have noticed that on Gujarati Wiki, the locator maps always appear for the whole of India, while on English, they appear for particular state when the infobox is placed. For example, if you compate Palitana and પાલીતાણા you would know what I mean. Can someone please advise what will we need to do? do we need to modify the code, template or need the Image of Gujarat on gu.wiki uploaded somewhere?-- DhavalTalk 11:17, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You will have to modify Infobox Indian Jurisdiction template to use the Gujarat map when the state parameter is set to Gujarat. Please refer to WP:IIJ and WP:IIJ/P for how it is done here. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:01, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ganesh, I did try modifying the Image part in Infobox Indian Jurisdiction template to look like WP:IIJ, but still there is same Indian map on page, where I have used this infobox. Can you please have a look at it and help me out?-- DhavalTalk 16:33, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

West Bengal locator map

[edit]

West Bengal map Image:West_Bengal_locator_map.svg shows the northwest tail of Bardhaman district wrongly as part of Bankura district. This is the locator map. But, the district map Image:WestBengalDistricts_numbered.svg shows the district border correctly. Can someone please correct the locator map accordingly? Thanks. --GDibyendu (talk) 17:53, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have an official source for the correction to be made? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:22, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't made any change. District map is used in Districts of West Bengal for quite some time now. Official map is here. --GDibyendu (talk) 18:34, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done I've fixed it. Refresh your browser cache, and it will show up. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:48, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need locator map for Chhattisgarh

[edit]

This map from official website can be a used as a reference for building up a locator map for Chhattisgarh. There is a similar map already showing districts: Image:Map_Chhatisgarh_state_and_districts.png. But not sure whether coordinates are set fine in that map; attempt to use it as base_map in geographic Infobox did not work as expected. --GDibyendu (talk) 08:14, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a suggestion: try contacting User:PlaneMad directly. He has made most of the state maps. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:48, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Current map for Chhattisgarh seems to be wrong. For example one can easily check that cities in Raigarh district are falling in different districts according to this map. --GDibyendu (talk) 08:34, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need Haryana Locator Map

[edit]

Hi, I will be working on the Haryana article in the next few weeks. Would someone be able to make a locator map, and also a political map, if possible? Thanks! -- Longhairandabeard (talk) 16:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the locator map! Could someone change the location of the minimap to top left corner? Right now it's obscuring part of Sirsa district (See at Haryana).. Another request, Haryana has two new districts, Mewat and Palwal. Could someone include them as well, based on these sources - [8],[9] and [10] for Mewat. There are no specific sources for Palwal yet, only news articles stating that Palwal, Hodal and Hathin tehsils are part of the new district. Request: some changed needed in West Bengal district maps

[edit]

It seems they were based on two maps of different size. So, my request is to make them based on a map of fixed size. If you see the table in Districts of West Bengal, it will be clear what I am suggesting. I tried to remove the text from Birbhum_district.png; though, I am not sure whether that change is going to persist. Thanks. BTW--GDibyendu (talk) 17:04, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be a easy task, so I am doing it myself. --GDibyendu (talk) 06:21, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Map needed for Indian Antarctic Program

There is a good map available on the MSN Encarta website depicting the historically significant Dakshin Gangotri station and the Indian Bay camp.

Will it be possible to have a map based on this location? It can be used for the Indian Antarctic Program article which I'm currently revamping.

GIS source for disputed areas?

Does anyone here have a source for GIS data showing the various disputed area boundaries? Infobox image help

[edit]

As I was editing I wikilinked to this article about Saurashtra in India and there is something wierd going on in the infobox with the image spilling out onto the text in one place. I assume that this is some sort of formatting issue but have no experience with infoboxes or images.
FYI, I checked the image and several other wikis where it is in use and this problem does not occur, the image is normal and the text below readable. Cheers. CaptainScreebo Parley! 22:58, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location maps for MP districts

[edit]

Hello,

I think it would be better to use maps like this instead of File:Madhya Pradesh district location map Raisen.svg for districts (e.g. Raisen district). If reading an article about a district, one certainly knows where is the state, so there is no need to show a map of the whole India. Yann (talk) 06:44, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, there are several errors as some districts has been split: [15]. Yann (talk) 05:52, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

[edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Request for Comments: The Geospatial Information Regulation Bill, 2016

[edit]

Here is something that would affect this wikiproject, especially all maps of India in all of Wikipedia: the Indian government proposed a bill, calledThe Geospatial Information Regulation Bill, 2016 that regulates acquiring, disseminating, publishing and distributing any geospatial information relating to India. The bill is open for comments and suggestions until June 3rd, 2016.

This bill proposes that any person who acquires, publishes, distributes and/or value-adds geospatial information should get a license from Security Vetting Authority established under this Act. The word person is defined to include companies, firms and any association of person whether legally incorporated or not. From my reading I get a sense that Wikimedia Foundation should get a license, for every use of maps (and information attached with geo-location) of India.

I think the bill, as proposed, have far-reaching affects. A debate around this is more welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Veeven (talkcontribs) 14:02, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
