Member join date

[edit]

Ipigott: As far as I can tell, there is no way to prevent the Join WikiProject form from overriding date when updating membership details. However, it should be relatively easy to write a bot to fix the creation date. The logic would be as follows:

  • If the join date stated in a WikiProjectCard is older than the actual creation of the WikiProjectCard, leave it as it is.
  • Otherwise, replace the join date with the actual creation of the WikiProjectCard.

This would fix overriden creation dates, while keeping older creation dates that are older than the WikiProject X membership system itself. This is the case of WP:SOCIALISM, where I manually created membership cards for old members while keeping their original join date. What do you think? This would require some consensus here before we can request it at WP:BOTREQ. Best, --MarioGom (talk) 07:31, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ipigott: Do you have some examples of WiR members who experienced this problem? That would be useful to validate the solution. --MarioGom (talk) 07:32, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MarioGom: I'm afraid I can't remember specific names but there have been two or three cases over the past couple of months. Every day I check the membership list for additions by searching on the most recent dates. I then check to see whether the name appears on the appropriate mailing list. If it does, I check the membership card edit and usually find another "original" membership date. Next time it happens, I'll let you know. It's not a big problem but more than once I have "welcomed" editors who have been members for some time. I then have to apologize. Maybe you should just leave things as they are. Now that I'm aware of the problem, I'm more careful about welcoming people. Thanks for looking into this and proposing a solution.--Ipigott (talk) 07:52, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott: Ok. Given that the problem doesn't happen so frequently, I'll try a more lightweight solution with a user script. This would avoid the WP:BOTREQ hassle. Best, --MarioGom (talk) 07:57, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott: I created a log of WiR members by join date: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Members/Log. Would that be useful? --MarioGom (talk) 14:10, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MarioGom: Thanks very much. That looks interesting as it provides a basis not only for checking the date when each member joined but also for calculating how many members joined each year. It would be useful to have updates at least once a year. Is that something you could manage?--Ipigott (talk) 15:50, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, sure. I can update it from time to time. MarioGom (talk) 16:01, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MarioGom: That sounds good. When you say the list does not contain those who have left the project are you referring to those who are inactive or just to those who have intentionally left or who are no longer registered on Wikipedia? I was going to check some of the names of inactive members but see from Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Members/Inactive that the list is no longer accessible. Is that something you can fix? Finally I was wondering if you could add # to each name in order to facilitate calculations of new members per year and the total number of members.--Ipigott (talk) 16:12, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, it includes inactive members, but excludes those who blanked or deleted their {{WikiProjectCard}} page. The issue with Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Members/Inactive is that it exceeded the size limit of included templates, I'll give a try at fixing it, as well as the formatting stuff. MarioGom (talk) 16:32, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott: Fixed both things. Now the Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Members/Inactive page looks pretty ugly, but without all the formatting code, it should last for a few years until reaching the limit again ;-) MarioGom (talk) 16:53, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
:::MarioGom: Thanks for everything. Really efficient responses!--Ipigott (talk) 20:52, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wishlist

[edit]

Reading again about the sad conclusion to this project, I've added an entry to the community wishlist for the WMF to equip someone to pick it up and finish it. – Joe (talk) 10:54, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
