Subsidiaries of YTL Power[edit]

YTL Power Generation Sdn Bhd - Malaysia In 1992, YTL Power started as the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Malaysia by securing 21-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) from the government for the development of 1,212MW combined-cycle power plant at Paka, Terengganu, and Pasir Gudang, Johor. The development of the combined-cycle power plant was financed through the ringgit denominated currency (the first 15-year long term bond) issued by Employee Provident Fund (EPF) in which the use of such financing was able to successfully mitigate the influence of the Asian Financial Crisis at the time.[3] [4]

In 1993, YTL Power completed and commissioned both gas-fired combined cycle power plants at Paka, Terengganu and Pasir Gudang, Johor with a total combined capacity of 1,212MW. The open-cycle plant was completed in world record timing of 10 months and the combined cycle plant with gas-fired was completed in 22 months.[5] Subsequently in September 2017, the Paka power plant was awarded a supplementary PPA for a further period of 3 years and 10 months. [6]

YTL Power has been listed on Bursa Malaysia (the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange) since 23 May 1997 on the Main Market of the exchange under the Gas, Water & Multi-Utilities sub-sector of the Utilities sector. [7]

ElectraNet Pty Ltd – Australia

Wessex Water Limited – United Kingdom In 2002, YTL Power acquired 100% of Wessex Water Limited (Wessex Water) from Enron. Wessex Water is a regional water and sewerage service company that serves 2.9 million customers across a geographic area of approximately 10,000 square kilometres in the south west of England, including Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, most of Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Hampshire.[3] Wessex Water is regulated by the Water Services Regulation Authority (known as Ofwat), the economic regulator for the UK water industry, and holds a license from the UK government under an instrument of appointment to supply clean water and treat and dispose of waste water from its operating region. Wessex Water’s regulatory capital value demonstrates ongoing growth since it was acquired by YTL Power in 2002, at GBP 1.3 billion (approximately RM 7.7 billion). As at 30 June 2023, the regulatory value was at GBP 4.1 billion (approximately RM 24.4 billion) In April 2015, average bills were reduced by 5% through its assistance programme, ‘tap’, a programme aimed to support customers who are financially vulnerable and have difficulty in paying their bills. The programme helped more than 21,000 customers to pay ongoing charges and repay debt, as well as offering additional practical help to reduce water and energy bills, and, under guidance from its expert affordability advisory group, a discount of around 20% has been introduced for pensioners on the lowest incomes who often suffer hardship in silence.[11] Subsequently, Wessex Water has been awarded for its high safety standards keeping its workforce safe and healthy. The firm received two international health and safety awards from the British Safety Council including the ‘Power and Utilities’ sector award for the second consecutive year. It is now the fifth year that Wessex Water has been recognised by the British Safety Council for their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and ill health. [12]

In 2019, Wessex Water has been recognised with the 'Institute of Water Innovation Award 2019 for the utility's 'Sewer Renovation 'Re-Rounder' Robotics' campaign. YTL PowerSeraya Pte Limited - Singapore

On 6 March 2009, YTL Power acquired 100% equity interest in YTL PowerSeraya Pte Limited (YTL PowerSeraya) from Temasek Holdings. YTL PowerSeraya is situated on Jurong Island – Singapore’s oil, gas and petrochemicals hub which is in close proximity to the world’s major shipping and oil routes, and extensive fuel storage capacity.[14] YTL PowerSeraya’s power generation business has a licensed generating capacity of 3,100MW, consisting of combined-cycle plants, co-generation combined-cycle and steam turbine plants.

In 2011, PowerSeraya became the first power generation company to export electricity to Malaysia’s national power producer, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, marking the first commercial deal for cross-border sale of electricity between Singapore and Malaysia.

In 2018, with the liberalisation of the Singapore electricity market, YTL PowerSeraya re-established its retail brand in Singapore as Geneco. Besides Seraya Energy’s commercial and industrial customers, the company now also caters to households and small and medium enterprises. This unification of the retail brand in Singapore provides customers with a seamless and more efficient service experience.[15] As of June 2024, Geneco becomes the largest electricity retail market in Singapore.

In 2022, YTL PowerSeraya acquired Tuaspring Pte Ltd, a 396 MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Singapore. The original purchase consideration of SGD 331.45 million, which was to be settled via a combination of cash, together with shares and shareholder loans in the holding company of YTL PowerSeraya was subsequently restructured to a purely cash deal of SGD 270.0 million. The transaction was completion in June 2022.[16] Hence, the plants that are operated under YTL PowerSeraya has contributed more than 30%of Singapore’s total electricity needs. [17] In 2023, YTL PowerSeraya collaborated with TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd for the export and import of 100MW of electricity to Singapore via a newly upgraded interconnector.[18] In January 2024, YTL PowerSeraya won the first RFP for the development of a 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT under EMA's centralised process and it is expected to be completed on Dec 31, 2027. [19]

YTL Communications Sdn Bhd - Malaysia

In Malaysia, YTL Power owns 60% stake in YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms), which owns and operates a 4G LTE network using 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum awarded by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). YTL Comms’ network provides high-speed mobile services under Yes brand since 2010.[7] Yes has been working with the Malaysian Ministry of Education to provide 10,000 primary and secondary national schools all over the country with a high-speed 4G internet connection with a cloud-based Frog VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) platform under the name 1BestariNet program.  1BestariNet was an initiative by Ministry of Education to facilitate the replacement and improvement for the SchoolNet service that expired at the end of 2010. Yes realized this initiative by developing a high-speed internet coverage across the entire nation, cultivating immersive familiarity with the benefits of ICT to the education institution. The 1BestariNet project is also recognised on the global stage. Sundar Pichai who was then Google SVP for Android Chrome and Apps, had presented 1BestariNet during Google I/O 2013. He commended Malaysia for wanting to provide 4G connectivity throughout 10,000 schools including rural areas.[20] Subsequently in May 2013, Yes 4G as a key component behind the 1Bestarinet, has introduced the world’s first 4G Google Chromebook by Samsung. The Samsung 4G Chromebook is co-developed exclusively between Yes, Samsung and Google to integrate a 4G module that works perfectly with Yes’ 4G network where Yes 4G has already covered 85% of the country across over 4000 base stations. A key reason for this is due to the “pace at which 4G connectivity is being rolled out throughout the country and what’s happening in Malaysia can be a role model for many other countries around the world.” according to Sundar Pichai. [21]

Yes 5G – First to Offer 5G Services in Malaysia

In 2016, the 4G brand under YTL Comms is also the first mobile operator in Malaysia to introduce Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) capability for high-definition and crystal-clear calls. At the same time, Yes Altitude, the newest high quality Android device developed by Yes, was unveiled as the most affordable VoLTE smartphone in the Malaysian market, allowing more consumers to access high speed LTE internet. [22]

In December 2022, Yes was awarded by the MCMC Star Rating Awards 2021 – Best in Quality of Service, Best in Consumer Satisfaction, Best in Corporate Social Responsibility and, significantly, the Best Mobile Network Operator. [23]

Integrated with on-site solar photovoltaic power, the YTL Green Data Center Park aims to provide data storage colocation services to clients looking for more sustainable and lower carbon solutions within Southeast Asia and serves as the foundation for achieving YTL Power’s greater objective of carbon neutrality for its data centers across the region. Subsequently, in October 2023, YTL PowerSeraya has committed to build an additional 4 megawatt-peak (MWp) photovoltaic (PV) system at the Pulau Seraya Power Station (PSPS) on Jurong Island. It is scheduled for completion in September 2024. This expansion to the operational 1MWp solar PV system that built in 2019, will bring the total solar PV capacity at PSPS to 5MWp [41].

In addition, Ranhill remains dedicated to lead sustainability effort through the adoption of clean energy - 50MW large scale solar (LSS) plant in Bidor, Perak, commercially operates in February 2024. In a disclosure to Bursa Malaysia Sdn Bhd, this project marks Ranhill's inaugural venture into owning large-scale solar assets, aligning with the company's commitment to renewable energy.
