Thank you, editor with a knowledge of scripts and alphabets, grammar and languages (and what an editor is), for the quality article The Exaltation of the Flower, performed in collaboration, for copy-editing and politely questioning the edits of others including IPs, for helping at the reference desk, for pointing out mistakes, explaining and reflecting, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Cleopatra and Caesar

Aloha. Could you take a quick look at Cleopatra and Caesar? It's still a rough work in progress, but I would like a nice English translation of Cléopâtre apportee a César dans un tapis, which more or less reads as Cleopatra brought before Caesar in a rug, but I'm wondering if you've got a more elegant (and accurate) translation. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 03:24, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

That’s certainly the gist of it, @Viriditas. Brought before has some connotation of a formal appearance, so simply brought to might be better for this surreptitious rendezvous—or perhaps brought to visit. And substituting carpet for rug might elevate the tone a bit. (Either carpet bag or bedroll would be somewhat closer to the original in Plutarch, but the object is thought to have been made of linen or leather, and anyway that would misrepresent the version of the story shown in the painting. The Greek word is stromatodesmon, derived from words meaning “bedclothes” and “bindings“.)—Odysseus1479 22:40, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Any changes you can make to the article directly would be appreciated, and there's a DYK in it for you! :) Viriditas (talk) 22:53, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot

There's a thought, now. Only thing: it was working fine up until about four days ago, and for most of that time it was running in tandem with some other scripts; I don't believe I added anything new before it quit on me.

I'll give it a try later tonight and see what happens. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:33, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Nope, didn't work. I removed all the scripts I'd added after it, to no avail. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:02, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Too bad, @Ser Amantio di Nicolao, sorry not to be more helpful. I wonder if it might have something to do with a site-software tweak. I see your posting on the Commons talk page hasn’t been answered … Maybe someone at WP:VPT can help; even if they aren’t familiar with the script they might have an idea of the sort of thing that may have been broken by any recent changes.—Odysseus1479 06:38, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Maybe I'll pop over there later today and have a look. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:44, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, but of course, for legal reasons, my question was only was it possible rather than a request that it be done. -- PBS (talk) 09:58, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Sorry if I stepped on your toes, @PBS; I guess your use of “someone” (as opposed to, say, “one” or “a user“) made me read the query as a request, despite the absence of any other indication such was intended. I plead the general precariousness of communication via keyboard. ;)—Odysseus1479 00:46, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

JSTOR cleanup drive

Hello TWL users! We hope JSTOR has been a useful resource for your work. We're organizing a cleanup drive to correct dead links to JSTOR articles – these require JSTOR access and cannot easily be corrected by bot. We'd love for you to jump in and help out!

Sent of behalf of Nikkimaria for The Wikipedia Library's JSTOR using MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:17, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

@Nikkimaria: I thought I’d poke at a few of these, but I seem to have hit a wall right out of the gate: the above list is of WP articles, not JSTOR articles. I went to that page and the first item that caught my eye was Wow! signal; on going there I couldn’t find either “JSTOR“ or “dead link” anywhere, neither in the page as displayed nor in the wikitext. How does one find the broken links, other than by clicking everything in sight?—Odysseus1479 01:04, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Hmm. These links generally don't get flagged by the dead-link bot, but usually you can find them by searching wikitext. I'm not sure why this particular page doesn't have any. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:18, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. I guess I’ll put this down to a ghost or glitch of some kind, and try some other articles.—Odysseus1479 01:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

My edits

Hi,

I'm not aware of any edits that I've made to any site on Wikipedia. In fact, I haven't signed into wikipedia for over 4 months or so. I only saw your message to me because it appeared on my mail. Could you elaborate? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Burrito77 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

@Burrito77: Please have a look at your contributions page, which shows five edits this month, or look at the page history for Odyssey for today’s edits. Is there any chance someone else has access to your computer? It might be a good idea to change your password ASAP, in case your account has been hacked.—Odysseus1479 21:48, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
@Odysseus1429: Yeah, i'll be doing that soon. I received another message consisting of another article that "I" edited. But just wanted to make it clear, it wasn't me. Can you just give me an idea of what exactly the person edited in your article?
@Burrito77: It’s not my article, despite my handle … You can see for yourself by clicking a “(prev)“ link beside your name on the History pages, or the “diff“ link beside an article title on your Contributions page. But to summarize, the edits were unsourced musings about Odysseus & Calypso’s sexual relationship at Odyssey, and likewise about Billy Pilgrim & Montana Wildhack’s at Slaughterhouse-Five.—Odysseus1479 22:43, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Bcpicao (talk) 10:08, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, @Bcpicao, much better this time. Sorry to revert you in the middle of your addition, but it didn’t make much sense as I found it. And thanks for registering an account; if you explore your Preferences and look into customizing the interface with user styles and scripts, I expect you’ll find it has many advantages.
You can start a thread on any Talk page by clicking the “Add topic“ menu tab at the top, which will provide a separate field for the section heading. Or you can click the “Edit” tab (or the “[edit]” link beside the last heading at the bottom of the page) and append your posting underneath; in this case a heading is created by enclosing the first line in pairs of equal-signs (as in the “A kitten for you!” line above). See WP:TPHELP for more information; I’ve left a template on your Talk page that includes a few more links.—Odysseus1479 21:28, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

@The joy of all things: for more on non-breaking spaces, in project space we have MOS:NBSP; some specific guidance for application to figures & units can be found on MOS:NUM—you weren’t far off with your guess, as the latter page includes WP:CURRENCY, which can also be accessed via WP:£, WP:$, or WP:€. There’s also a brief general discussion at WP:Line-break handling#Preventing and controlling word wraps, and a technical note on where the software will automatically treat ordinary word-spaces as non-breaking (before or after certain punctuation marks).—Odysseus1479 20:50, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Schleimann and "surreal"

Well spotted, and well-reasoned. That extremely dubious "excerpt" from "undocumented" papers (???) seems to have been imported during a recent merging of articles. "Surreal" was coined in the late 1930's, at the earliest. And there you have it. Haploidavey (talk) 09:40, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

@Haploidavey: I checked the history of the now-merged article on Luise, and the Frankenstein bit was there from the very start, in 2007 IIRC. I would have contacted its creator, but that account shows only a handful of edits and hasn’t been around for years. I had thought it just possible for a modern translator to have chosen the word “surreal” to render a German expression meaning ‘weirdly nightmarish‘ or something of the kind, but it’s reassuring to see others sharing my olfactory impression … Regarding your subsequent edits, I’d noticed that there was an effort at referencing that addition the second time around (albeit all in a clump, so one can’t tell which was supposed to support what, and without page numbers), so I had a look—since Doug Weller had expressed skepticism about the third-marriage claim in particular, I searched and scanned for that in the proffered biographies, finding not even a hint such a thing had happened, let alone the wife’s name. I didn‘t bother hunting for support for any of the preceding statements, as it was seeming like a wild-goose chase.—Odysseus1479 22:20, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
I thank you again, because I found the whole thing a deeply enjoyable hour or so. Olfactory impressions count for a lot, don't they. Sometimes one's mistaken but once started, it's hard to stop. It gives me a grim, primitive glee (I'm not at all sure that's healthy, but if it helps...) Haploidavey (talk) 23:03, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Armenian transliterations 2.0

Hi Odysseus1479,

Some time ago, you commented on a question which I placed on Doug Wellers talk page, about anachronstic Armenian transliterations for dynasties/kingdoms.[1] Some time ago as well, I placed a comment about this matter on the Urartu talk page, as it included numerous modern Armenian transliterations, and eventually per WP:SILENCE, I removed them today. However, I was reverted, and only after this revert, I received a reply at the aforemention talk page section. That's kinda the intro of the matter. Would you mind giving your opinion about this on the respective articles' talk page? Bests - LouisAragon (talk) 04:23, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Edit war warning

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Synesthesia shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Yo Ho Ho

@Anthony Appleyard: I think it should be deleted, either as an orphaned/spurious talk page (G8) or as an attempted copy-paste move (A10? G12?); the IP that created it had just previously added the misspelt word to Jainism and, on being twice reverted, copied the article text to the above title. I don’t know what the intent is, possibly a content fork, but regardless it doesn’t look at all helpful. Jain meditation itself doesn’t seem to be involved, except for being the main article corresponding to the section of Jainism where “mediditation” was added.—Odysseus1479 06:58, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Swedish Wiki

Hello ! Since you were very nice indeed, and helped me with an English->Swedish translation (template = mall), do I wonder whether you are having some kind of relation with Swedish Wikipedia ? It's impressing by number of articles. But most are brief copy-translations from this Wiki. Have you ever heard of "Wikipedia Depth" ? See the extern link. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_article_depth Quote: "The depth or editing depth of Wikipedia is one of several possible rough indicators of the encyclopedia's collaborative quality, showing how frequently its articles are updated. It does not refer to academic quality, which cannot be computed, but to Wikipedian quality, i.e. the depth of collaborativeness—a descriptor that is highly relevant for a Wikipedia." And I think I know the reason for the very poor depth-rate of Swedish Wiki. It's 5.09, and Swedish Wiki is number 121 of 135 and of large (1 million articles +) Wikis have only the rather unknown Cebuano a lower rate. I had at occasions made a few IP-edits around 2006-2007. But my first alias "JPEriksson" was created a year later. OK, a beginner makes mistakes. But that was never the problem. In the article about Josef Stalin was the Aftermath-section very short and mainly stated something like "Stalin build up the very poor agricultural country to a modern Superpower, but it was done at the price of many lives." Nothing about Gulag, the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, in which he trusted Hitler dispite the fact he never trusted them close to him. And nothing about that even his communist successor, Nikita Chrustjov, revealed Stalins' terror on his own people and that he was more or less erased within Soviet Union history. This was discussed in civil manners at the talk-page, when suddenly alias "Wapne" (later "Yger") just wrote that I would be blocked if I continued discuss this matter, in a very nasty way. And this "Wapne/Yger" continued to harass me for no reason. And I was permanently blocked by him (and "his gang", they appear to have regular physical meetings at something called "Kungsan" in Stockholm, some 600 km ,a 6-7 hour drive away from where I live) when I wrote Scanian history from a local perspective (including reliable sources). Scania was Danish until 1658, and became a regular part of Sweden by 1720. But should Scanians necessaraly be happy for this ? And there are quite a few other Swedes (including from Stockholm) who only writes here. In my mind is Swedish Wikipedia run by around perhaps ten people who all knows each other and with "Wapne/Yger" as manager.(The from media known alias Hannibal isn't involved - but ought to). I just wanted to explain this matter from my own perspective. Sorry if this was disturbing you, but I hope not. Cheers ! Boeing720 (talk) 17:42, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

I notice the contest is running again this year; please let me know if I can still do anything to help with any phase of it. By way of a micro-résumé: I read French reasonably well, although my writing is less than fluent and probably unidiomatic; I have a fair knowledge of Canadian geography, especially the Rocky Mountain parks; and on Commons I have file-mover privileges and am quite familiar with categorization practices. Apologies again—I feel particularly bad about failing to respond because in the past I’d complained that Canada wasn’t participating—but I would be happy to get involved wherever it might be useful this time around.—Odysseus1479 00:01, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

About referencing for FA

Hi! I saw your comment at User talk:Katolophyromai. While I should have said "like Harvard", isn't it required that there be a bibliography section and that citations be brief (i.e. just author's last name, year, and page number)? I wasn't trying to mislead him. I'm working on GA myself, and am hoping to land a FA in the future as well. Psychotic Spartan 123 23:26, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your efforts. Sorry, I didn't know that, apparently, there is a character limit, and the string I gave you is just over the limit. However, the spaces after the colons are not required, and the semicolons are not required, so if you remove those, I think it will work — at least, it works for me. Try this:
Odysseus<span style="color:slateblue">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet">4</span><span style="color:purple">7</span>'<span style="color:maroon">9</span>Odysseus1479
Let me know how that works. Anomalocaris 03:15, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
@Anomalocaris: that almost did it, thanks–pointed me in the right direction anyway (I should have had the sense to look at the end of the line and see the truncation). The em-dash is part of my signature as well, and I’ve gotten used to the convenience (especially since the dash-tilde sequence is awkward to type), so it was still one character over! But I went and looked up the hex codes for the colour names of more than seven characters, which just did the trick. Too bad a shorter syntax was deprecated in favour of a longer, but I guess there’s little benefit any more from small savings in bandwidth or storage …—Odysseus1479 03:55, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
Cool! I should have thought of using the hex codes. Good work!
By the way, I assume you know that Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Apostrophes says
 • Consistent use of the straight apostrophe ( ' ) is recommended, as opposed to the curly apostrophe (  ).
Also, Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Ellipses says
 • To indicate an omission of material from quoted text, use an ellipsis (plural ellipses): a set of three unspaced dots: ... (The pre-composed ellipsis character (), or three dots separated by spaces (. . .), are not recommended.)
Not really a concern on talk pages, but since you're using them both here, I thought I'd mention it. Cheers! —Anomalocaris 04:12, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Lord Kelvin's Coat of Arms

Hi there, I just uploaded this screenshot. Would you mind have a look at it? I don't mean to insist on the commas, but I'm just curious---is this blazon by Thompson SP not very well written?
You can just reply right here; I will follow. Thank you! -- SzMithrandirEred Luin 06:56, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, @SzMithrandir. I wouldn’t insist either, considering it appears that way in the cited source. I’m still pretty sure it’s not normal to put commas there, as they make it less clear that the tinctures apply only to the immediately preceding charges. Compare the version at Numericana, where a heraldic expert apparently supplied a couple of missing colours (for the supporters’ clothing) as well.—Odysseus1479 07:49, 23 January 2018 (UTC) P.S. I tagged the image with a PD licence and added the source; it was bound for deletion without them. – 08:10, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for replying!
Well, as you can see, I'm finishing up the translation of the article into Chinese. And I've had a difficult time trying to capture the blazon; I feel that there isn't any established translation standard, so I have to somehow paraphrase.
Could you please explain a few words to me? (a) Escutcheon: what does "a thunderbolt .. between two spur revels of the first" mean? is this sentence trying to describe how the thunderbolts wind up on that both-end-torched (a.k.a. spur?) stick? what does "revel" mean? "first"? (b) Crest: "vested" means clothed, right? what does "cuffed" mean?
Many thanks! -- SzMithrandirEred Luin 18:30, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
A heraldic thunderbolt is not s simple lightning-flash, but the whole figure at top centre of the shield: a winged pillar with flaming ends and crossed lightning-flashes. It’s a rather rare charge; in modern arms (e.g. those of the BBC) it usually represents electricity. Proper means in the natural colours—which is a bit tricky for anyone who hasn’t personally seen Zeus smite somebody, and I haven’t found a definitive description, but it’s apparently white with red flames; here the wings are excepted and said to be Or (gold or yellow) instead. On … between two … implies the thunderbolt is in the centre of the blue chief (top third of the shield) with the stars to either side. Revel is a variant spelling of rowel, here a quaint name for the stars. First comes from an old tradition of never naming a tincture more than once in a sentence: here it means Argent (silver or white), the first tincture mentioned in that part of the blazon. Yes, vested means simply clothed, while habited implies a complete costume. Cuffed just means the cuff is a different tincture (white) from the rest of the sleeve (blue), as if it were folded back to show the lining.—Odysseus1479 21:51, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Translation get done! Very grateful! Long live the Queen. -- SzMithrandirEred Luin 04:42, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Cultural appropriation

I removed some examples from Cultural appropriation, as they're not cultural appropriation, I'd find it difficult to argue that the Quechua and Aymara people were in any kind the dominant culture of the British. Or that Britain, Germany or Japan had a dominant culture over American culture.

Franciscouzo (talk) 03:38, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@Franciscouzo: thanks for explaining; I’m actually inclined to agree. Please try and use edit summaries to give some indication of the purpose or motivation for your changes (when not self-evident)—deletions especially, because that’s such a common form of vandalism.
