  • Ceres, largest of all asteroids is discovered by the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826), and is briefly considered to be a planet.

  • In optics, interference between light beams is discovered by Thomas Young (1773-1829), showing the wave nature of light.

  • Joseph-Marie Jacquard develops the Jacquard Loom, in which holes strategically punched in a pasteboard card directed the movement of needles, thread, and fabric.
  • The xaenorphica, a bow-stringed instrument with a keyboard, is invented in by C. L. Röllig of Vienna (the strings were set in vibration by violin bows.).
