The 1940 Maine Black Bears football team was an American football team that represented the University of Maine as a member of the New England Conference during the 1940 college football season. In its 20th and final season under head coach Fred Brice, the team compiled a 1–6 record (1–2 against conference opponents). The team played its home games at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. Roger Stearns was the team captain.[1]

Maine was ranked at No. 313 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.[2]
