The 2024 Piala Sumbangsih (also known as Malaysian Charity Shield) was the 39th Malaysian Charity Shield, an annual football match played between the winners of the previous season's Malaysia Super League and Malaysia FA Cup. As Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) becomes the domestic treble winners[a] of the previous season, their opponents were the 2023 Malaysia Super League runners-up, Selangor.[1]

The match was played at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on 10 May 2024. This was the first match of Malaysian League introduced the video assistant referee (VAR) review system.[2] Johor Darul Ta'zim are the six-time consecutive defending champions.

Background[edit]

This was Selangor's first Charity Shield appearance since 2016 when they losing 2–1 to the same opponent with 7–6 on penalties after a 1–1 draw.[3] Following JDT's successful as domestic treble winners, Selangor qualified for the 2024 Piala Sumbangsih as runners-up of the 2023 Malaysia Super League.[4] Selangor were looking to win the Charity Shield for the first time since 2010, when they beat Negeri Sembilan 2–1 at Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium.[5] They had failed to win any of their last two appearances in the competition.

Johor Darul Ta'zim proceed another Charity Shield match as winners of the 2023 Malaysia Super League.[6] The club later faced Kuala Lumpur City and Terengganu in the 2023 Malaysia FA Cup final and 2023 Malaysia Cup final, on course to complete a continental treble.[7][8]

The two sides faced each other in the Charity Shield once previously, in 2016, a match won penalties 7–6 by Johor Darul Ta'zim, after 1–1 draw.[3]
