The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) is a public sector company in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India headquartered in Visakhapatnam, that operates the Visakhapatnam Metro and Vijayawada Metro.[1][2] Initially, it was incorporated as Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the implementation of the Vijayawada Metro Rail project. Later, the Visakhapatnam Metro Rail Project was added to the list.[3][clarification needed] It was first proposed as a Mass Rapid Transit System in VGTM UDA, which was later changed into Amravati Metropolitan Region Development Authority (AMRDA).[4]

History[edit]

The APMRC was created on 29 October 2015 with N.P. Ramakrishna Reddy as its first managing director. This project was first initiated as a Medium Metro rail project, designed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). However, it was rejected by the Government of India in New Delhi due to financial issues. The Government of Andhra Pradesh then opted for a Light Metro rail[5] system, but faced opposition from engineer E. Sreedharan, who was serving as an advisor for the central government in New Delhi regarding both metro projects. E. Sreedharan stated that the Light Metro system would not meet the needs of Andhra Pradesh's capital city, Amaravati, so the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between APMRC and DMRC was revoked.[6] Since the central government refused to fund the projects, the Andhra Pradesh state government decided to undertake them with financial support from companies in Korea and Malaysia.[7]

Projects[edit]

Visakhapatnam Metro[edit]

The Visakhapatnam Metro was initially proposed with a Metro Rail alignment of 42.55 kilometres (26.44 mi) in the city. The government has plans to expand the Metro Rail system to cover more routes in the city as well as in the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (VMRDA) area.

A detailed project report is currently being prepared for the 79.9 kilometres (49.6 mi) length of the Light Metro Rail system and the 60.2 kilometres (37.4 mi) length of the modern Catenary Free Tram system. The proposed Light Metro Rail corridors are:

  • Kommadi to Steel Plant Jn. on NH-16 (34.23 kilometres (21.27 mi))
  • Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.26 kilometres (3.27 mi))
  • Thatichetlapalem to Chinavalteru (RK Beach) (6.91 kilometres (4.29 mi))
  • Law college Jn. to Marikivalasa (8.21 kilometres (5.10 mi))
  • Kommadi to Bhogapuram Airport (25.3 kilometres (15.7 mi))

The modern tram ways include:

Vijayawada Metro[edit]

Vijayawada Metro is a light metro rail project with two corridors: one from Pandit Nehru Bus Station to Nidamanuru and another from Pandit Nehru Bus Station to Penamaluru, 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi) and 12.8 kilometres (8.0 mi), respectively. They have a total of 25 stations[8] and are estimated to cost 969 crore (US$120 million) on the PNBS-Nidamanuru corridor and 831 crore (US$100 million) for the corridor between PNBS and Penamalur.[9]
