Arya Rajendran S. (born 12 January 1999) is an Indian politician who currently serves as the mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.[3][4][5][6] She was elected from Mudavanmugal ward, belonging to Nemom Assembly Constituency from Communist Party of India (Marxist) at the age of 21 and was appointed as the mayor of the corporation which made her the youngest mayor in the country.[7]

Personal life and education[edit]

Arya Rajendran is the daughter of Rajendran, an electrician, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent.[8][9] She did her schooling from Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School, Trivandrum. She is graduated in B.Sc. Mathematics from All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram.[10] She is married to K. M. Sachin Dev, who is the member of Kerala Legislative Assembly from Balussery constituency.[11]

Politics[edit]

Arya Rajendran was the state president of Bala Sangham, the Kerala's largest children's organisation.[9][12] She was also a state committee member of Students' Federation of India[8][13][14] and also serves as CPI(M)'s area committee member at Chala.[3]

She was the candidate of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Mudavanmugal ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the youngest candidate in 2020 civic body elections at the district.[10][15][16] She defeated the UDF candidate Sreekala by 2872 votes.[8]

Arya broke the record of Sabitha Beegum who became Kollam Mayor at 23[17] and Devendra Fadnavis by being the youngest mayor in India.[18][19] Fadnavis became the mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation at the age of 27.[20][21]

Controversies[edit]

On April 29, 2024, She and her husband, K. M. Sachin Dev, blocked a state transport bus (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) with her private car and allegedly abused the driver. The couple also asked the passengers onboard to get off from the Public Transport bus. The driver of the bus, Yadhu, who was a temporary KSRTC staff, was detained in the Police station overnight, based on the complaint Arya Rajendran filed against him, alleging him to have shown her hand gestures which she found to be sexually abusive, whilst he was driving the bus through a busy city at night. Media personnels challenged the authenticity of the allegation Arya Rajendran made against the driver because it's virtually impossible to spot the driver from the back seat of a car at night, especially in this particular bus (Ashok Leyland Viking) where the non- illuminated driver cabin was much higher than the car (Maruti Suzuki Wagon R), and when both vehicles were in the move. Circulating videos captured by bystanders sparked off backlashes against the Mayor. It is speculated that the couple was intimidated because the bus did not give way for their car to pass, which, Yadhu claims he was unable to as they were in a narrow one-way lane. Further video surveillance footage revealed the couple's car was intentionally blocking the bus a few minutes before the incident occurred. The Mayor also lied to the media about how she didn't block the bus, which contradicted direct visual evidence from the CCTVs in the vicinity. The memory card in the video surveillance system installed in the bus was later found to be missing. Yadhu blamed the Police for not officially filing his case against the Mayor for blocking the public transport bus and allegedly abusing him, intentionally delaying the process till the Mayor showed up with her case. Following vigilance reports based on interviews of onboard passengers, seemingly lacking evidence to prove the Mayor's claims against the bus driver, the Transport Minister, K. B. Ganesh Kumar, instructed the police to register a case regarding the missing memory card. Left wing supporting media has bought up precedent charges of flashing and rash driving against Yadhu, also alleging him to be a BJP supporter, and the whole fiasco is a politically planned event to degrade the Mayor.
