Col F.R. Collins DSO

Locomotives designed by Col F.R. Collins DSO, South African Railways (SAR) Chief Mechanical Engineer (1922-1929).

During his term in office, in 1925, Collins began a program to rebuild several older steam locomotive tender types with new flush-sided upper structures and larger water tanks. In 1927, the SAR began to convert the couplers of its Cape Gauge rolling stock from the Johnston link-and-pin coupling system, which had been in use since the establishment of the Cape Government Railways in 1873, to AAR knuckle couplers.[1]
