Category:Novels about geisha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A number of novels have been written about geisha – traditional Japanese entertainers, artists and hostesses, distinctively characterized by wearing traditional kimono and makeup. Contrary to popular belief, geisha are not the Eastern equivalent of a prostitute; this misconception originated in the West due to interactions with Japanese courtesans and sex workers, who traditionally also wore kimono. However, historically, some geisha did engage in sex work, and geisha were renowned as romantic figures. Many novels, plays and artworks have been created around the theme of geisha, romance, and their reputation for loyalty to their patrons.
