As per this discussion, it is hoped that membership in this category can be restricted fairly tightly to those figures who served directly as advisors to individual shoguns. Those who had influence or offered advice primarily as a result of their positions, such as particular daimyo, hatamoto, relatives of the Tokugawa clan, and officers of the Dutch East India Company should not be added here.
