Proposal[edit]

This catagory should become a super-cat under which would be two seperate cats:

Category:Canadian immigrants to America for people who have moved to the US more or less for good (have US citizenship, etc.) and
Category:Canadian expatriates in the United States for people who live in the US temporarily.

I agree that there should be a category for "Americans of Canadian descent." I'm not sure whether it should be this category, Canadian Americans. I'm still trying to figure out whether this category functions as a catch-all for articles where the person's immigration status is unclear, as well as for Americans of Canadian descent.--Vbd | (Talk) 18:21, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian descent is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. Canadians are of many, many different ancestries proving that you cannot have any Canadian descent. Canadians can be French, English, Irish, Scottish, Chinese, not Canadian genetically or ancestrally! I've re-read WP:SUBCAT and I remain uncertain about doubling-up on categorisations here. If someone is listed under Category:Canadian immigrants to the United States, should they also be listed here, as a "Canadian American"?--Vbd | (Talk) 18:25, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am Canadian and this category seriously annoys me. It seems to imply that, to be Canadian you have to be American, too. Like we are the same country/nationality. I am Canadian. That's it. Canadian Americans NOT the same as "Americans of Canadian descent"[edit]

Aside from the fact that "Americans of Canadian descent" uses a lot more language, it completely misses the point. When someone is born in Canada and moves to the U.S., they are Canadian-American. John Babcock had dual citizenship, for example. He was both Canadian and American, not one or the other.Ryoung122 06:06, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We've never really categorized people by dual citizenship. I don't think this category was meant for that, but if it was, it was a bit of a one-of-a-kind. As stated in the applicable naming conventions: "Concurrent citizenship may be reflected by duplicating the occupation (for example, Category:Canadian actors and Category:American actors for a dual American–Canadian citizen. Generally, categories that combine two nationalities and an occupation are not created)." You could propose creating a category for dual citizens at WP:CFD that didn't also have an occupation, but I kind of doubt it would get support. You never know, though.
