Culture?[edit]

I find the Oregon culture category for this category problematic, as the culture cats seem mostly to have to do with the arts. I guess I'm thinking burials aren't necessarily Oregon-specific, in other words, it's not like the have a special way of burying people here. But I can't think of someplace else that makes sense, especially since not all these folks are actually from Oregon. Otherwise I'd say put it in (ex-)People from Oregon. How about Category:Oregon society...oh look, that exists already. I'll go ahead and add it, please take away culture if my argument is convincing. Katr67 (talk) 14:07, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added it after seeing Category:Burials in the United States by state in the Category:American culture by state. It makes some sense, in that burials (or disposition of the dead in general) are a cultural thing. Take India where they burn them with pyres, or in the US where we putem in a coffin (or burn them in incinerators). A lot of what we learn about past cultures is from how they buried their dead. A lot of archeologists work is excavating graves, and archeologists are basically cultural historians. It's not the best fit, and I'm not sold on it, but I see the reasoning why the parent cat has it. Anybody else have some thoughts? Aboutmovies (talk) 07:08, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. I think the problem mostly is that it's not entirely clear what the Culture categories are supposed be for. I should go find out if anybody knows. But I'm sort of burnt out on talking about categories right now though... Katr67 (talk) 04:21, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Burnt out? But why? Like most cats (law perhaps?), the culture cat seems a bit vague. Plus things like history of Oregon and sports in Oregon are not in there, and why is Military in Oregon in the Category:Oregon one? Seems like it should be under gov? Maybe one of the category cabalists will come along and straighten us out? Aboutmovies (talk) 07:54, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
