Probable deletions[edit]

@Alexis Jazz: Hello!

I've here gathered all non-free files that are entered as cap logos in {{Infobox Minor League Baseball}} and where a main logo is present. This, unlike my former mass nomination to FFD, should be more uncontroversial, since there are not even a possibility of critical commentary (the logos are in the infobox) and since there already is a main logo in the same infobox I have a hard time seeing how it would be fair use with another one. The only think that speaks against a deletion I think, is if the cap logo is below c:COM:TOO US. Would you help me out here so it doesn't become such a hassle this time around?Jonteemil (talk) 19:42, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

All cap logos that were non-free but that I deemed to be free I gathered in Category:Non-free logos that should be free.Jonteemil (talk) 19:44, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Jonteemil, File:GreenevilleAstros.PNG is the team logo. Please double check for errors. Are all the logos from the US? Minor League Baseball is a "hierarchy of professional baseball minor leagues in the Americas" which is more than just the US? @Clindberg: I think File:Dragons cap.PNG (dragon texture), File:BirminghamBaronsCap.png (complex shape) and File:Bluerocksalt.PNG (map) may be eligible for copyright protection and File:Naturals cap.PNG (lightning bolt) might be, do you agree? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 00:34, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
File:BirminghamBaronsCap.png is just a capital "B", with maybe an arrow stuck in there. Fancy font, sure, but it's still typeface and as such not eligible in the U.S., I don't think. File:Bluerocksalt.PNG ... really is also just typeface, with a simplistic arrangement, and the state outline as the interior of the B. I think there was a case which pretty much said that basic state outlines are essentially PD now; the copyright in a map would be in the various other elements present in the map and their arrangement, which that does not have. I think that would be below the TOO as well. File:Naturals cap.PNG is harder... It is a stylized N but there are also other lightning elements in there. I probably would not be comfortable claiming that was below the threshold, so that one might well be over. The dragon texture is likely a problem, agreed. I did not look at all the others but most are obviously copyrightable. If some of the logos are very old, such as before 1989, they may have easily lost copyright protection if there was no copyright notice -- maybe the cardinal in File:Palm Beach Cardinals cap.png is old, for example. But that will be arduous to try and prove so no real reason to bother unless others can show evidence. Carl Lindberg (talk) 02:01, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Clindberg, thank you! I was unaware that state outlines are essentially PD now. I only checked the files in Non-free logos that should be free, the redlink MediaWiki generates (the way Jonteemil linked the category above) may not show the category content depending on which editor you use. @Alexis Jazz and Clindberg: We need to differentiate between the non-free logos that I think should be deleted (here) and the non-free logos that I think are too simple (in Category:Non-free logos that should be free).Jonteemil (talk) 10:08, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexis Jazz: Do I have your blessing if I were to nominate all files in this category to FFD?Jonteemil (talk) 22:44, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jonteemil, I'd rather ask an admin like Explicit or Fastily seeing as how they will have to deal with it. The whole FfD would hinge on cap logos not meeting WP:NFCC#8. Nobody responded to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball/Archive 46#50+ files with bad fair use rationale and I know nothing about baseball. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 01:23, 22 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Explicit and Fastily: Do you guys have any objections before I bring this to FFD?Jonteemil (talk) 22:13, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Jonteemil, I guess not. I'd say go ahead. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 21:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, that category has been merged to Category:Simple non-free logos. – Fayenatic London 22:52, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
