Meaning of Defunct[edit]

@Myasuda and Charlesaaronthompson:
This category would seem to involve franchises which ceased operations. However, there are currently a large number of franchises (Baltimore Bullets‎*, Seattle SuperSonics‎, Vancouver Grizzlies‎, Buffalo Braves, New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Jazz (NBA team)) which relocated to another city(s) and remain in existence.

  1. What is the intent, here?
  2. Should there be another category for teams which merely relocated elsewhere? Suggestion for a Cat name?

Defunct franchises should be those who don't exist any longer, not those that relocated. I removed the category form "New Jersey Nets" and "New Orleans Jazz" as these weren't even articles, they were (rightly) redirects to Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz respectively. in my opinion, separate articles for the Seattle SuperSonics and Buffalo Braves (and anyone else who relocated and changed names) shouldn't exist, they should be rolled into the modern named franchise article. With the Baltimore Bulkets, the original is defunct but the second version is now the Washington Wizards. Rikster2 (talk) 02:45, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To elaborate on Rikster2's response, note that players from defunct organizations are dispersed to other teams, and defunct franchise records and statistics are never transferred to existing teams. Relocated teams continue to recognize records and statistics compiled at their previous locations and their players simply move to the new venue. This makes sense since they are still with the same organization — they just play somewhere else. So, relocated teams should not be placed in Category:Defunct National Basketball Association teams. Yeah, the only way the Sonics get placed in "defunct" is if it was a situation like the Cleveland Browns relocation controversy where the league specified that the franchise was suspended (in this case indefinitely) and only counted the Thunder records from the time they started in OKC. The NBA considers the Thunder to be the same franchise as the Sonics. For NFL and MLB franchises that have relocated, a separate history article is generally created for that era of the franchise's existence, such as History of the Los Angeles Raiders, History of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and History of the Philadelphia Athletics. With the move of the Rams back to LA, there was quite a discussion about how to organize that since the Rams originated in Cleveland, moved to LA, then to St. Louis, and now back to LA. What ultimately happened was the restoration of History of the Los Angeles Rams as the main franchise history article and separate History of the Cleveland Rams and History of the St. Louis Rams "daughter" articles. It would seem for instances like the Buffalo Braves, Seattle SuperSonics, Syracuse Nationals, Kansas City Kings/Cincinnati Royals/Rochester Royals, a similar setup would work with a hatnote to either the "History of..." articles for the current team name or to the history section for the many NBA teams do not yet have separate "History of..." articles yet. --JonRidinger (talk) 04:48, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, great idea and great work! Brings me to another thought. Category:Defunct National Basketball Association venues. That's another category that should probably be renamed, as many of these buildings aren't "defunct" as usually understood, because they are still standing and active, just not currently hosting NBA teams. I think we should rename it as "Former National Basketball Association venues". oknazevad (talk) 19:33, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
