Explanation for move[edit]

This category was previously named Category:Films directed by John Pilger, and my change perhaps needs an explanation. I thought the previous category name was unsatisfactory because Pilger has not been credited as director for most of his work. But because he can clearly be considered an auteur (author) of these works, the documentaries usually have the "a personal view" notice at the beginning, the actual credited director is irrelevant for the purposes of classification. The term film is also problematic. The bulk of those listed will have been shot electronically on tape or digital video formats, so the term 'film' lacks precision. While its use as a generic term is still standard practice for theatrical releases, only a handful of these documentaries were released theatrically. For the reasons given, 'Documentaries of John Pilger' seems to me the best option. Philip Cross (talk) 13:51, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Of Pilger's 58 films, only six carried a 'personal view' card, and the vast majority were shot on film Editor, JohnPilger.com 08:56, 18 August 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinylritchie (talkcontribs)

User:Vintlritchie over the on film issue, note I typed "listed" meaning (as ought to be clear) in the category or the template.Philip Cross (talk) 11:59, 18 August 2014 (UTC).[reply]
