Category talk:English-language operettas

The first intersection categ between Operas-by-language and Operas-by-genre

Some concern about the usefulness of this category as expressed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Opera#Category deletion. However, it does appear to me to be a potentially useful and notable intersection, and there appears to be over 20 articles already in Category:Operettas which could be included here.

However, it is the only by-language subdivision a opera genre category. Is it appropriate to create more intersection categories between language and opera genre? Should we have Category:Italian-language grand operas, Category:German-language grand operas, Category:Italian-language operettas, Category:German-language operettas, etc? It's OK with me, but if you make have English-language operettas subcat, don't you also need French and German operettas subcats? I don't think The Bohemian Girl is an operetta at all. Operetta hadn't really been invented yet. I think it was a light opera or comic opera. The Maid of the Mountains is also questionable. I moved Gilbert's other operas to Category:Comic operas, so I guess they will be automatically recatted together with their peers when that category moves. -- Ssilvers 23:45, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, re-reading my comments above, they don't look as open-ended as I has intended them to be. I'm not sure that it really is a good idea to divide each genre by language (I can see a case both ways), but I do think that if such a division is to be made, we should try to do so reasonably comprehensively, rather than have only one genre-by-language category. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:50, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
