I'm a little confused about the application of this category. "Ethically disputed educational practices" sounds to me like it would be pedagogical or teaching practices that are ethically questionable. But other categories such as "school bullying" have been moved in here, and that seems to me to be not an "educational practice" of any sort, but rather a general behavior as it manifests in schools. ...

I have a similar question with respect to the Category:Education scandals and controversies. Conceptually that includes a wide variety of issues -- from testing fraud, to plagiarism, to athletic scandals, etc. -- in other words, many things that are not "educational practices" under any light.

This category was created in the last couple of days by User:Brianhe (@Brianhe) and perhaps that editor can clarify what the intended scope of this category is. It may need to be renamed for clarity, and at the least I suspect needs a hatnote. --Lquilter (talk) 11:22, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am a fan of consistent names and usages of categories, even more than for articles themselves. Just as we have a Category:Ethically disputed business practices to hold topics related to business, but not necessarily practiced in a business, this category could contain topics related to education, but not necessarily practiced in an educational setting. An alternative category name might be "Ethical problems in education"? Maybe you have a better suggestion for the name of the category? — Brianhe (talk) 22:14, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looking further into the other categories, I see things in Category:Ethically disputed judicial practices that are not judicial. Stop and frisk and frisking are policing. SLAPP suits are judicial in the sense that they may ultimately involve judicial proceedings, but "judicial" as an adjective really suggests relating to a judge or a court. Similarly, plea bargaining is approved by a judge, but the whole point of the controversy is that they are short-circuiting the judicial process in the prosecutor's office. So this category's kind of off too.

Maybe the problem is just that "education" and "judicial" the adjectival choice isn't quite right. I like consistency in naming too, but we also have to consider whether the container category name fits the names of the contained categories, and whether it makes sense. Looking at the Category:Ethically disputed business practices, all those subcats are in fact reasonably described as business practices. Perhaps the problem is that "education practice" suggests something a little more specific than "business practice". Your "Ethical problems in education" seems better but then it's not parallel, and I'm not sure it gets around the problem. Maybe I'm just tired but I'm not having any brilliant insights here.
