Untitled[edit]

Following the CFD discussion on merging Category:Juilliard School of Music alumni and Category:Juilliard School alumni, which ended with "no consensus", I offered to help tidy up this parent category. I am doing so, using the following principles:

If it then appears that we need further sub-cats to distinguish between faculty divisions, or for the different non-music alumni, we can create them. Effectively, Category:Juilliard School people should be an article-free zone, unless there are people out there who are notable for their involvement with the School but who are/were neither alumni nor faculty. If anyone sees this, they are welcome to comment. Bencherlite 23:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Juilliard School of Music is not the designation for the music programs of the Juilliard School, it is the historic name for the school for 1946-1969, thus this category should only include alumni from those years. Even if Juilliard School of Music was the right way to refer to the music program, the question would not be "are the people musicians", but "were they in a music program at Juilliard".John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:40, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We need to follow standard proceedure[edit]

Standard procedure is not to distinguish alumni by career path, but by institution. Juilliard School has been the official name of the institution that was Juliard School of Music since 1969. Prior to 1946 there were two related institutions, the Institute of Music and the Juilliard Graduate School, with their top leadership overlapping. They merged in 1946. Juilliard School apeears to have musical and dramatic and maybe also some other divisions, but these are not officially called schools. The old scheme of assignment was just wrong. Thus I have attempted to place those who were students from 1946-1969 in the Julliard School of Music alumni category and students before or after that time in Juilliard School alumni. If it is not possible to deduce a time frame I have chosen the more general category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:14, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On a slightly different note there is a need to distinguis those who were students at Juilliard School and those who were stuents in pre-college programs. The later I have moved to Category:Juilliard School Pre-Collegiate alumni, but have not formed the category because I am not sure if that is exactly the best name. Also if articles do not state that the person attended Juilliard I have removed them from the category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:14, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
