Category for closed lidos[edit]

This is a subcategory of Category:Swimming venues in the United Kingdom i.e. places you can swim

I propose to remove items in this Category which relate to former, demolished or closed lidos.

The main reason is because you cannot swim there.--Lidos (talk) 19:20, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Swimming venues does not include a category definition. Consequently it is not all that clear where closed (and possibly temporarily closed) venues should be classified. It should be noted that such venues can be classified in more than one sub-class according to Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization. Consequently I suggest that to avoid confusion a sub-category of category:Lidos (closed) is created (unless someone can think of a better name) with a definition along the lines of "Lidos that are permanently closed or demolished" to exclude the temptation to add lidos that are just temporarily closed whilst being refurbished.—Speedoguy (talk) 12:04, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is an elegant solution. I will therefore remove items from the Categories affected and add the new category to those pools which meet your criteria, as defined above.

Note also category:Defunct_sports_venues. Ruislip Lido is in this category, and now has been added to category:Lidos (closed) - an ususual case where the reservoir still exists but swimming is banned. The former buildings associated with swimming have been demolished.--Lidos (talk) 08:24, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The category definition for the new Category:Lidos (closed) includes: "Lidos currently open, under refurbishment or planned refurbishment should be categorized in Category:Lidos." Almost all the currently closed pools have some sort of planned refurbishment.
Cleveland Pools has been closed for ages but maybe should be in Category:Lidos as it may actually re-open in 2012.
Broomhill Pool, Ipswich is not in [[:Category:Lidos (closed)], but may soon be covered with a steel cover by the owners IBC.
