Tyne and Wear Museums are sponsored by DCMS because these museums weren't considered to have the same national importance as the Merseyside collections that were "nationalised" to form National Museums Liverpool. However,no regional funding solution was found after the abolition of the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County Council, and therefore a partnership funding arrangement between central government and the local authorities in the area was eventually agreed.
