  • Comment. I suggest that body language be the overall article, and that subjects like "Kinesics" become subtopics and have redirect pages. This would balance the article out and avoid confusion. The reason I was looking up "body language" because I wanted to see if a topic called "synergology" had been created. I heard about this from a documentary called "What's That About?" Dessydes 19:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm wondering what you mean by "subjects like kinesics"? The page linked to describes Synergologie ® as nonverbal communication rather than body language. I guess body language is a subset of NVC, as are gesture, facial expression, eye contact, proxemics, object communication, proteans (body language)... Kinesics, I guess, is a way of recording and interpreting physical movements. How do you think these topics should be organised? ntennis 22:28, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This has got me thinking that a nonverbal communication article series box might help, something like you can see in the Christianity or Sexual orientation articles. However, the NVC page really needs some work to serve as the parent article for the series. ntennis 02:59, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Good idea there. So we start from non-verbal communication, with the daughter articles being body language, sign language, kinesics, and synergology (or something of that sort). Dessydes 16:20, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I think that would be a useful place to start. But I'm still getting my head around some of these topics and trying to understand exactly how they fit together. Prosody vs paralanguage, for example. Does paralanguage include body language? Some say it is only vocal sounds. Does body language include eye contact? What exactly is the difference between synergology and kinesics? Is it just a brand thing? Also, it is sometimes said that the true sense of the adjective verbal is ‘of or concerned with words,’ whether spoken, written or signed. However, verbal is also commonly used as a synonym for oral communication, which would not include sign languages or writing. I'll try to add something to the NVC article. But go ahead with the series box now if you want! ntennis 03:06, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Although I could answer some of your questions here, I'm not going to. Instead I'm going to go ahead and create the NVC topic as per our discussion. There will be other users contributing in time. Your questions should inspire others to come up with answers. We can pull this off. Dessydes 09:59, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created Category:Non-Verbal Communication as a sub-category of Communication, have a look. So far it only has one article. Feel free to edit it a bit and move some articles into it, create a few stubs, etc. I'll have a look later and perhaps add a few things myself. Tell me what you think. Dessydes 10:18, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good work. Some of the pages we've discussed can definitely go in there already. I'm also wondering about graphic symbols, semaphore (communication), and linguistic gradient phenomena like "looooong" in spoken language or [shaped-like-this] in sign language. Should we move this discussion to the new category talk page? ntennis 16:30, 22 May 2006 (UTC) P.S. I just remembered that Wikipedia:Naming conventions suggests lower case, so maybe Category:Nonverbal communication is better? ntennis 16:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I chose to name the article in capitals, 'cos I've noticed you refer to it as NVC, however I can rename it, it is simply a matter of deleting the old one. Tell me what you prefer on my talk page. Once you've decided, it might actually be a good idea to continue the discussion from there (the category page). Semaphore (communication) could possibly fit in there, the things that really get me thinking (and I seriously doubt they could fit in there) are things like text messaging, etc. Dessydes 21:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I renamed the category as Category:Nonverbal communication and copied our discussion to the talk page there. I added the category to a few articles. Note that Wikipedia:Categorization/Categories and subcategories suggests that articles should not normally be in both parent categories (such as Category:Communication) and their sub-categories (such as Category:Nonverbal communication). ntennis 03:55, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NOTE: End copied section.

Good on yer[edit]

Wow, excellent work. Is there anything else to be done? Dessydes 14:29, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! ^_^ There's always more work to be done.... ntennis 01:52, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Augmentative and alternative communication[edit]

I've added this category which to some extent parallels the nonverbal communication category and aims to pick up a number of currently non-linked articles. Although it's a mouthful, sign languages aren't normally considered as "nonverbal" as their signs are as verbal as, say, writing. I'm not a specialist and don't know how widely this longer title is accepted. Would it be a better than using Nonverbal communication? Chris55 (talk) 13:37, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
