unsigned query[edit]

Anyone know the name of fears of specific food items? I've met people afraid of mustard, ketchup and milk. I've been trying to find the name of that, if there is one.

I couldn't find anything specifically for mustard, ketchup or milk (though I'm guessing the latter one is lactophobia). Here are some related ones:

Lachanophobia - Fear of vegetables.safas Barleyphobia - Fear of barley. Bananaphobia - Fear of bananas. Geumaphobia, Geumophobia - Fear of taste. Mageirocophobia - Fear of cooking. Mycophobia - Fear or aversion to mushrooms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.116.114.195 (talk) 16:56, 23 October 2011 (UTC) sdfsd[reply]

Some phobias are not phobias at all[edit]

Just because a word ends with "phobia" does not make it one. Xenophobia is a sociological phenomenon, not a psychological one. It is not really fear of strangers, bot rather hatred of strangers. AngloPhobia falls under the same category, as do Anti-Italianism and Anti-Christian prejudice... They should be deferred to some other category (prejudice category, maybe?).

I Agree. Ageism is not a phobia. That is the most rediculous thing I've ever seen on Wikipedia.

Xenophobia and similar phobias are usually described as "fear or dislike of ___". And many small children *are* afraid of strangers — it's common at that age. As for adults... I think of the traditional Chinese character 單 Dān — meaning "single" or "alone" — which has been explained by Chinese-Australian author Rose Quong as "a farmer with his pitchfork shouting 'go away!'" (the two little boxes at the top — 口 Kǒu, "mouth" — are the shouts); suggesting that farmers were known for their *dislike* of strangers. Rural areas even in the US are notorious for this. I doubt that Donald Trump would have used rhetoric about 'scary foreigners' (i.e. 'thieves and rapists crossing the border') quite so much if his audiences did not already fear as well as dislike foreigners... and of course his support boomed in US rural areas. – Raven  .talk 08:32, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As a separate comment, the lede of "List of phobias" begins: "The English suffixes -phobia, -phobic, -phobe (from Greek φόβος phobos, 'fear') occur in technical usage in psychiatry to construct words that describe irrational, abnormal, unwarranted, persistent, or disabling fear as a mental disorder (e.g. agoraphobia), in chemistry to describe chemical aversions (e.g. hydrophobic), in biology to describe organisms that dislike certain conditions (e.g. acidophobia), and in medicine to describe hypersensitivity to a stimulus, usually sensory (e.g. photophobia). In common usage, they also form words that describe dislike or hatred of a particular thing or subject (e.g. homophobia)." — Accordingly, all those examples are on the list, though some on sublists by topic. IOW, the overall list article is not restricted to terms in psychiatric usage. Why should the Category be? It is not titled "Category:Psychiatric_phobias". – Raven  .talk 13:07, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Name of a phobia I have?[edit]

One of my fears, and I mean my greatest, horrid, fear, and this may sound strange, is total silence. The sound of crickets or the wind will calm me. But when there is no noise whatsoever to speak of, it scares the living shit out of me. I typically sleep with the TV on or a fan running at a very high level to avoid total silence. I know one of the phobias is eversion of noise, but I have the opposite, so what is it called?

ANSWER: Sedatephobia

Proposal to prune non-anxiety disorders from the category.[edit]

I have created Category:Sexual and gender prejudices, and have already added the -phobias appropriate to that category (to wit: homophobia, heterophobia, biphobia, transphobia) to that category.

I propose to remove them from this category, as the supercategory Category:Anxiety disorders does not appear to embrace them (that is, they do not refer to anxiety disorders) and they are not phobias in the mental-health sense. Can I have a consensus on this issue? --7Kim 14:38, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your proposal. I don't think the sexual and gender phobias mentioned above are listed in any professional diagnostic manual as a mental disorder, or considered a mental illness or mental disorder by any mental health profession. –Mattisse (Talk) 17:48, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree, for reasons stated two topics above; notably including that this is not titled "Category:Psychiatric_phobias". – Raven  .talk 13:11, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
