Portrait artists / painters[edit]

I started working on putting Category:Portrait painters into subcategories by nationality... and I discovered the Category:Portrait artists.

Would it make sense to combine these categories?--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:24, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I expect many of the articles in Category:Portrait artists are about painters ...unless they use collage or print, or photography, or another medium I can't think of at the moment. The general 'artist' category was created 7 years before the more specific 'painter' category, so there will be 7 years worth of articles to sort. A nice little job for someone with a month or so of their life to spare!! Sionk (talk) 18:47, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, and there's a category for photographers Category:Portrait photographers -- "adding" which is a subcategory of Portrait artists.
I have been able to categorize the Portrait painters by nationality pretty effectively using AWB (find and replace, access category, query to skip everything but the nationality) and then eye-ball before saving. So, it might not be too bad taken in chunks at a time.
I posted this at Wikipedia talk:FAQ/Categorization, and I think it would be good to post on the Visual arts project talk page.--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:52, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Added comment about photographers being a subcategory of Portrait artists.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:00, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
All of a sudden this has become clear for me, and I just want to make sure this makes sense to others:
  • Portrait artists should stay
  • Under it are painters, photographers, engravers... and whatever other subcategory would be needed
  • It would be good to move the painters from the portrait artist category into the subcategories for painters, by nationality
Does that make sense?--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:53, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds okay to me! The only suggestion I'd make would be to avoid creating categories with only one item of content. They should normally have at least two. Someone might take umbrage otherwise. Sionk (talk) 01:01, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! I am not going to create any more for the moment and will work on filling up the subcategories, per the list below.--CaroleHenson (talk) 03:43, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've got all the painters moved out of "Portrait artists"  Done - as well as recategorizing a few portrait photographers and portrait engravers into their rightful subcategories. What's left in "Portrait artists" are portrait sculptors, portraits created with mixed media, or it's unclear to me how they create their portraits.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:36, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
