Untitled[edit]

What is the idea behind this category, as there are already the specific subcategories of Category:Members of Christian religious orders? --Pjacobi 16:06, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for one, this category is more specific, as the Members of Christian relisious orders category would include Anglicans, Eastern Orthodox, Oriential Orthodox, and any other Christian groups that maintain religious orders; I think it would be important to note the denomination of someone known as a religious worker (and Category:Roman Catholics is getting rather large). Additionally, the members of religious orders cat would include monks, nuns, friars, sisters, and priests who are members of orders, each of which is a natural division. There exist already Category:Roman Catholic nuns and Category:Roman Catholic friars, and this one seems like the "next logical step". Gentgeen 18:16, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy of category[edit]

Some of these individuals date from relatively early in the Church's history, from before the 1054 split between Rome and Constantinople. Is it really accurate to call them "Roman Catholic", when before 1054 there was only one (at least in theory) "Orthodox" and "Catholic" Church?

No. It is very inaccurate, and totally anachronistic. To refer to anything from the medieval period as "Roman Catholic" simply makes no sense. Either the title of the category should be changed, or it should be restricted to post-Reformation saints. Timothy Titus Talk To TT 14:51, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"post-Reformation saints"??? What on earth are you talking about? We have hundreds of "Roman Catholic" categories that span the Reformation, and Great Schism. Johnbod (talk) 15:02, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, categories for monks from the pretty different Eastern and Western traditions make most sense, and notes should just be added to the categories explaining the scopes. Try restricting the Orthodox category to post-schism and see how far you get. Johnbod (talk) 15:02, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Calling them Eastern Rite and Western Rite makes sense. Talking about a "Roman Catholic Church" before any such entity existed, does not. At present this category even includes Celtic saints pre-Whitby, who weren't even using a Roman calendar or liturgy. Total nonsense. Talk To TT 16:15, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
