Whoa there, this category has way too many articles in it! When I started it in late 2004 I put a few dozen in it, now it has over 300. We need ideas on what new and more specific subcategories most of these could be assigned to. I have already begun this reorganization by creating the following:

Several articles could also fit well in existing subcats, such as anything containing "mobile" or "wireless".

Any other proposals?  –radiojon 06:21, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see editor Ulf Abrahamsson moving some stuff out of here. Last week I started moving articles out of the highly overcrowded Category Telecommunications to more specific cats including this one, then noticed that this one is only modestly less overcrowded than that one. Plenty of moving around to do yet and nobody should think all of my moves are written in stone and couldn't be improved. I found a great many articles in Telecommunications that I think should go somewhere else, but haven't yet found an appropriate existing category or a theme for a good new subcat. Could you explain what belongs in each category? I would destroy the Mobile Telephony category and moves it's articles to the Mobile category. Mathiastck 19:22, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Blest if I know. Categories get less attention than articles do. Several people were inventing categories a couple years ago without much attention to subcat relationships or overlapping. I have done a little tree pruning, grafting, shuffling and other work, but I too mostly write in articles, not categories. As for those categories, I agree that they are even a bigger mess than this one and its parents and children and overlappers, but I am less well qualified on the subject matters, so I pay less attention over there.
The place to put these questions is in those cat talk pages, not this one. If nobody answers in a couple days, then it's pretty much your job to decide what those particular categories ought to be doing and then make them do it. Easy as herding cats, as the saying goes. One thing you can do, if a cat is doing something that another is doing adequately, is empty it, rename it to do a job that needs doing, move it around in the tree if necessary, and populate it with articles that need a cat. I'm reluctant to create categories from nothing, because there's already too darn many cats. And yes, I know it's not a tree and shouldn't be, but many parts of the structure would benefit from being made more tree-like. Jim.henderson 00:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I just happened by and thought there are soooo many articles here too! At first I was thinking about: "Category:Telephone services" (E.g. Call blocking, Voicemail, 4-1-1, etc.) but that name seemed vague. Then I thought, what about sorting some of these companies in here as Category:Telephony service providers" or "Category:Telephone Companies", etc.... Then some I thought- could be sorted out as "Category:Telephony Terms". E.g. (Do Not Call, Missed Calls, Landline. etc. things that a customer does.. But I thought this might all get mixed up by some people in terms of "telephone services" (or things which are actually on- the phone line.) The simplest thing I could come up in the end was perhaps Category:Telephony (Voice) and Category:Telephony (Data) and go from there. LOL! I was also thinking about the possibility of chucking some of the more higher level advanced stuff as "Central Office" or "DSLAM" and perhaps other things where span a country as "Long haul telephony" or something like that... Somehow splitting up the telephone between Last Mile, local DSLAM, or something beyond... CaribDigita (talk) 20:18, 14 December 2008 (UTC) I have no clear idea on how- you would tackle all this.[reply]
Minor point, when discussing a category, add a colon as in Category:My favorite category because if the colon after the brackets is omitted you'll be categorizing the page you are writing in, rathar than discussing the category. I took the liberty of editing your text to do this. As for the rest, yes, it needs thought. Perhaps there should be a Category:Telephony measurement since many small articles here are about levels and such. Jim.henderson (talk) 18:12, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or Category:Telephone services. Jim.henderson (talk) 04:45, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
