Validity of category[edit]

It was almost unheard of for a Unionist Party member to use the Unionist label when seeking election or sitting on a council in Scotland before the 1960s (when the party resumed officially using the Conservative label) and in some cases (eg Dundee) not until the 1970s. Indeed the Unionist Party officially did not get involved in local politics. Off course several members often did become councillors, but use Moderate, Progressive or similar labels. These groups often also included Liberals (eg Garnet Wilson in Dundee. Some of those listed here would never have been considered Unionist councillors, so I think this category is dubious.
