"Rwanda has a limited number of universities. Whereas this might be attributed to the country's general size in terms of area and population size, there are several factors causing this such as lack of enough capital to build more universities; both by the government and the private sector. This is equally associated with the country's historical political instabilities especially the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi minority by the Hutu majority, and the civil war, in which over a million Tutsi and moderate Hutu were murdered. This left the already fragile education system severely damaged due to the death of countless teachers, university lecturers, students as well as destruction of education facilities at all levels.

However, the Rwandan government has been successful in restoring order and thus providing potential environment for the development of education and other sectors as well. As such, a number of universities have been established since the end of genocide and war in July 2004. These include the following:

1. The National University of Rwanda 2. Kigali Independent University (largest private university in Rwanda by student body - with two campuses, one in Kigali and another one in Gisenyi). The school was founded after 1994 (between 1995-97) by Dr. Rwigamba Balinda, who is currently its President and a senator in Rwandan Senate. 3. Kigali Institute of Science of Technology (KIST- public school established after the 1994 genocide) 4. Kigali Institute of Education - public school, established after the 1994 genocide. 5. ISAE Busogo (public school - exclusively teaching agriculture-based courses). 6. School of Finance and Banking - SFB (public school, offering MBA courses as well). 7. Universite Laique Adventiste du Kigali - UNILAK (private religious (Seventh Adventist Church) school established after the 1994 genocide). The school obtained full government accreditation in December 2008. 8. Kigali Health Institute - KHI (public school established after 1994 genocide, producing medical assistants in areas such as Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Environmental Health, General nursing and Mental health,....) 9. Umutara Polytechnique 10.IRST (Institute of Scientific Research and Technology) 11.Kabgayi Catholic University "
