Category talk:Web server software

This category is confusing. The category starts with giving a short introduction to what a web-server is and then it has a number of links to implementations, which is more like articles.

A more appropriate heading is “web-Server implementations”. Use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML-RPC_Implementations as a template.

Web server software vs. implementation[edit]

I think that in this case the word software is more appropriate than the word implementation because there is no specification about how a web server should be designed or implemented whereas XML-RPC has a specification (as any other protocol) and it is implemented as a software library; so it is true that a web server acts like an HTTP server (thus implementing the HTTP protocol) but it has lots of other features that are not even named in some specification.

Category cleanup[edit]

I've cleaned up this category by removing the J2EE servers and templating systems. This category now only contains web (HTTP) servers as described by the introduction. --Stephen Deken 16:56, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Okay, I've cleaned up this category again by kicking out all of the templating engines and other things that aren't web servers. I guess I'll just keep doing this once a year. --Stephen Deken 17:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
